PhotosB If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Havent you noticed that you have bee smarter since you started to learn a language?According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were pared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),”he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34.Reading, writing, and prehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.25. The main subject talked about in this passage is _.A. science on learning a second languageB. mans ability of learning a second languageC. that language can help improve brain powerD. language learning and maths study26. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means_.A. a researcher on language learningB. a second language learnerC. a person who can speak two languagesD. an active language learner27. We may know from the scientific findings that _.A. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density isB. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesnt know a second languageC. the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on peoples brainD. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time28. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that_.A. learning a second language is the same as studying mathsB. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in study other subjectsC. Italian is the best choice for you as a second languageD. youd better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second languageC What is language for? Some people seem to think its for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of wordsthe longer the lists, the better. Thats wrong. Language is for the exchange(交流)of ideas and information. Its meaningless knowing all about a language if you cant use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they cant speak correctly or fluently(流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldnt be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, Foreigners often speak English too correctly. But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. Theyre English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong bees right. People not only make history, they make languages , too. But a people can only make its own language. It cant make another peoples language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldnt overdo(做过头)it. They should put munication at the first place.29. Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English,he_. A.never makes mistakes. B.often makes mistakes . C.always makes mistakes. D.cannot avoid making mistakes. 30. The underlined sentence means that_.A.foreigners speak correct English. B.foreigners speak incorrect English.C.foreigners speak English according to the grammar rules.D. Foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English. 31. When we speak a foreign language,we should_.A.not be afraid of making mistakes. B.speak in the Chinese way.C.break the rules. D.speak according to the rules. 32.What is the most important when speaking a foreign language?A.Grammar rules. B.municationC.Lists of words. D.Making no mistakes. If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive(不坦率的)person. You worry a lot and youre always easily upset. Youre very stubborn(顽固的),but you arent very ambitious.
