Their teacher was trying to keep them in line. Tom looked around but there was no place for him to sit. He walked into the station cafe. He looked up at the clock there. It was only twenty to twelve. He found a seat and sat down before a large mirror on the wall. Just then, Mike, one of Toms workmates came in and sat with Tom. “What time is your bus?” asked Mike. “Theres plenty of time yet,” answered Tom. “Well, Ill get you some more tea then,” said Mike. They talked while drinking. Then Tom looked at the clock again. “Oh! It might sound like science fiction, but professors at the University of Tokyo have taken the first steps toward making that a reality. The team recently introduced a human-shaped kitchen robot that can pour tea and other drinks into cups and serve them to guests. When teatime is over, the robot can also wash the dishes and put them away. In California, another interesting kitchen robot has been developed, called Readybot. It can pick up objects and either store them in cabinets (橱柜) or put them in the trash. It also carries a separate floor-cleaning robot that can operate by itself. Unlike the Japanese robot, Readybot just looks more like a large box with arms and wheels. Readybot was created by engineers and designers who set up a club called the Readybot Challenge. They believe that in the future millions of robots will be needed in homes to perform ordinary household tasks. Readybot is just the first step in their plan to create a robot that can do jobs not only in kitchens but in other rooms of homes and in offices as well. Clearly there are technological difficulties to solve before robots can cook a complete dinner, and there are also many safety concerns (忧虑). Not everyone (especially parents) would be comfortable with the idea of robots in their house, manipulating hot pans and sharp knives. The European Commission recently funded(资助) a project to study these concerns. According to lead researcher Professor Chris Melhuish, “Enabling robots to work safely with humans is a key need for the future development of robotics.”39. C Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict(迷),” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled(皱的).” Today David wears casual clothes khaki pants and a sports shirt to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “Im working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.” More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the changes from formal to casual office wear have been slow. In the early 1990s,many companies allowed their workers to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for workers has really become an everyday thing,” said business adviser Maisly Jones. Why have so many companies started allowing their workers to wear casual clothes? One reason is that its easier for a company to attract new workers if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people dont want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so its hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study made by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that casual dress has a side effect on work. Supporters of casual office wear also say that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”43.David Smith refers to himself as having been “a clothes addict” because _. A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt B. he couldnt stand a clean appearance C. he didnt want to spend much money on clothes D. he wanted his clothes to look tidy and clean all the time 44. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because _. A. he no longer works for any company B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes C. he looks handsome in casual clothes D. they make him feel at ease when working 45. According to this passage, which of the following is FALSE? A. Many workers dont like a conservative dress code. B. Comfortable clothes make workers more productive. C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young workers. D. All the employers in the U.S. are for casual office wear.46. Here are some shopping tips: 71 Depending on your workout, shoes designed for walking, running, tennis, cross-training or another specialty will provide the best support for your feet.Shop when you normally exercise. Feet actually get bigger throughout the day, sometimes swelling up as much as a half-size by nighttime. 72 Try them on. Never grab a pair of exercise shoes based only on the size of footwear you normally buy. Bring the type of socks youd wear to work out and go for a walk through the store. 73 You should be able to spread your toes out comfortably. Make sure theres about a half-inch of space between them and the front of the shoe. The back should fit snugly (warmly and comf ortably) against your heel and not move up and down. If your feet are different sizes, buy based on the larger one. Talk to an expert. Shoe salesmen and personal trainers can study your stride (步伐) and the shape of your feet. 747 5 Many trainers recommend switching footwear every three to five mont hs, if possible, to maintain proper cushioning and support. One tip: if you have to tie your shoes very tightly to feel a good amount of support, they may be ready to go.A.
