A About a few years ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to meI never heard any noise from the children, but the parents were always shouting at them. We often met. I always spoke to them, but the only answer I ever got was a hello from a four-year-old girl. One day when I returned they were just coming back to their apartment and the little girl was holding the door in the hall open for the others. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things. The parents were telling her to hurry. I looked up and saw the little girl still holding the door open, waiting for me. I hurried as much as I could and thanked her. She was smiling from ear to ear. That afternoon I was at the K-Mart and I saw a white teddy bear. I thought of the little girl and said to myself, “I bet she would like it.” So I bought it for her. The next day there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her family. She was so proud of her bear and thanked me. Now when we meet in the hall we all speak in a friendly manner. Last night we had about 4 inches of snow. When I opened the outside door, there was my car with all the snow removed. The man next door was the only person I knew in the whole building, so when I saw him the next day, I asked him if he was the nice person that removed the snow. He said No. He wanted to, but his wife said she wanted to do it. They say its the language barrier that stops them. But in my mind, the reasons are beyond language The first reason may be that these students feel a little inferior to American students, especially when they dont speak English well. Because of the cultural and economic differences between the Western and Eastern worlds in general, some Chinese students subconsciously(下意识地)think highly of Western students, looking down on themselves.Second, some Chinese students are too afraid of feeling embarrassed. Because of the language problem,Chinese students often find it hard to understand the jokes their American peers make. Some may feel so embarrassed that they try to avoid talking to Americans. There is also a cultural reason. China and the US have very different cultures. Its natural that students from these two countries find it hard to understand each other. Some Chinese students choose not to watch American TV shows or listen to American music since they dont understand the jokes in American comedy or the lyrics of a popular song. That leads to further segregation(隔阂)between themselves and American peers. Im no expert, but I do want to give a few tips to students who are planning to study abroad and are interested to fit in. First,be confident. Your foreign classmates are not superior to youDont think of them all as hard-to-reach people. Second, always say yes to social activities whether they are organized by your school or your friends. Go to watch sports games even if you are not playing and are just there to cheer for the team. Third, dont try to improve your English merely by memorizing vocabulary. Try to watch TV shows, read popular books, and just talk to people. Remember, language is not a barrier and it never will be. The real barriers exist because you are not trying.8The underlined phrase “inferior to” in Paragraph 2 probably means“ ” A. interested in B. less important than C. senior to D. colder than 9What does the author think is the barrier for the Chinese students in Paragraph 3? A. Music. B. Comedy. C. Culture. D. Segregation.10What is the purpose of the text? A. To give some suggestions. BTo attract Chinese students. C. To introduce the US culture . D. To overcome the language barrier.11Which part is the text most likely taken from in a newspaper? A. World. B. Discovery . C Science. D. Education. D Wi-Fi free of charge has become very important to us: many stores and shopping malls offer it, restaurants use it to attract customers, and for libraries and coffee shops it is a must-have service. Even when people are traveling, they scan for free Wi-Fi. When selecting or rating a hotel, six in ten travelers believe that unlimited Wi-Fi is the most important factor. “Today, people will never forget to pack their smart phones, tablets and laptops into the suitcase,” said the Daily Mail. “We rely on free Wi-Fi heavily when travelingespecially when it comes to checking social media, checking out travel tips, and accessing websites.” However, despite the opportunities that free Wi-Fi gives us, “our over-reliance on technology has come at a price, with travelers feeling unable to escape social media”, said Lonely Planet, the worlds largest travel guide brand. Anita Isalska, Lonely Planet editor and tech addict, was forced to unplug when in an isolated (隔绝的) camp in Greenland recently. “Adjusting to this slower pace, I began to realize that: social media had changed into a habit,” she wrote. “I had believed I was capturing(捕捉) moments, but in reality my busy fingers were preventing me enjoying travels deepest pleasures. How fully can you appreciate a huge glacier or wild flowers when your brain is selecting the right photo filter (滤镜) or the perfect six seconds to take photos?” In September, Lonely Planet released 10 predictions for the future of global travel. One of them was that true escapes will be highly valued in future, so remote hotels will start to make their lack of the Internet into an appealing feature. Would you like to have an unplugged holiday? 12. According to the passage, people nowadays tend to do the following EXCEPT _ . A. enjoying travelling better without carrying any Hi-Tech equipmentB. thinking ill of a hotel without Wi-Fi C. getting out of a library that has no access to the InternetD. making travel plans via the Internet13. Through the fourth paragraph, the author intends to _ .A. get into another topicB. give more evidence to the view mentionedC. show a different opinion on the topic D. summarize the previous paragraphs14. What has Anita Isalska realized in Greenland?A. Travelers cannot survive without Hi-Tech.B. Her over-reliance on technology has come at a price. C. Taking pictures doesnt affect appreciating nature.D. Her fingers are not flexible enough to take enough pictures.15. What does “an unplugged holiday” mean in the last paragraph?A. A camping holiday. B. A holiday without taking pictures.C. A holiday in a remote hotel. D. A holiday without Wi-Fi.第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” 16 I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English. First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. 17 However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.18 Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesnt matter. 19 The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking. Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive(主动的) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. 20.A. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.C. However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”! D. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.E. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.F. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.G. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned. One Sunday afternoon, my son Perfect asked me, “Are all people the same even if they are different in color?”I thought for a minute, and then I said, “Ill explain, _21_ you can just wait until we make a quick _22_ at the grocery store.
