October 16th is World Food Day, a day of action against hunger. The date commemorates the founding in 1945 of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO. On this day, people around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger in our lifetime.Over the past decade or so, we have seen a great reduction of people living with hunger on a nearly daily basis. Back then, about one in six people went to bed hungry most nights. Now its about one in every nine.Nonetheless, that still leaves some 795,000 thousand chronically hungry people around the world. Of these, 60 percent are women, and this despite the fact that most small farmers living in the developing world are women. And when women go hungry, so, all too often, do children. About 161 million kids under the age of five malnourished. This means that their brains wont develop normally, they may have difficulties learning, and their physical and cognitive growth is stunted. Lack of nutrition compromises not only their own success in the future, but also the development of the communities, economies and countries in which they live. In addition to those children who are chronically undernourished, almost 5 million children under the age of 5 die of malnutrition-related causes every year. The global community is working to eradicate hunger, because it is the right thing to do. The first of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, called for halving the proportion of people suffering from hunger and facing extreme poverty. We have achieved that goal. As we transition to a sustainable development agenda for 2030, we have raised our ambitions and are striving to effectively end hunger and extreme poverty altogether.【答案】【参考译文】10月16日是世界粮食日,在这一天会反对饥饿。 2. The method of scientific investigation is nothing but the expression of the necessary mode of working of the human mind; it is simply the mode by which all phenomena are reasoned about and given precise and exact explanation. There is no more difference, but there is just the same kind of difference, between the mental operations of a man of science and those of an ordinary person., as there is between the operations and methods of a baker or of a butcher weighing out his goods in common scales, and the operations of a chemist in performing a difficult and complex analysis by means of his balance and finely graded weights. It is not that the scales in the one case, and the balance in other, differ in the principles of their construction or manner of working; but that the latter is a much finer apparatus and of course much more accurate in its measurement than the former.【答案】科学研究的方法只不过是人类思维活动的必要方式的表达;它只是对所有现象进行推理并给予精确和准确解释的方式。 Unlike the mass, the intellectuals like to reason and are interested in facts. With critical thinking habits, they have become leaders who resist propagandas which confuse most people. The clerisy lay stress on evidence, and are not too ready to believe illogicality and fallacy. They consider oversimplification as the root of thought to make a mistake. Meanwhile the academicians dislike slogan, absolute affirmation and gross generalization, which are a propagandists usual measures. Therefore, how can we keep up integrity of personality, and how to continue upholding the value of individual in face of overpopulation and overexpansion of organizations as well as many more effective and comprehensive propaganda tools? Up to now, it is a question that can be proposed and given a good answer to but it will be too late to find out an answer to such question for the next generation in the future where the stifling collective atmosphere prevails, descendants may not think of such question at all.4. From the early 1950s to the middle 1960s, namely, in the third historic period of nutrition, vitamin therapies began to become notorious. Consequently, the nutrition course in medical schools became less popular. Just before a decade ago, many pharmaceutical companies found the sales of vitamin soaring. So they quickly provided plenty of vitamin samples and promotional materials, which would publicize the benefit of taking vitamins, for medical practitioners. As a result, it exaggerated the function of vitamins to successfully control disease. It is well-known that curative effect of vitamin and mineral therapy for the treatment of serious disease is much less than that of the treatment of chronic disease, such as malnutrition.5. Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that man is here for the sake of other menabove all for those upon whose smile and well-being our own happiness depends, and also for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of my fellow men, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received. My peace of mind is often troubled by the depressing sense that I have borrowed too heavily from the work of other men.To ponder interminably over the reason for ones own existence or the meaning of life in general seems to me, from an objective point of view, to be sheer folly. And yet everyone holds certain ideals by which he guides his aspiration and his judgment. The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort and happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle.【答案】我们在这个世界上的处境很奇怪。 6. Highly successful scientists depend on special talents, like in arts, music, and so on. Nature produces them very slowly, parsimoniously, and at a constant rate. One has to do more with more with both natural gifts and formal extensive academic training. Their number cannot be increased under command: they develop spontaneously whenever the scientific training of the community is adequate to provide the basic training they need-which is today the case in several nations over the world including many of the developing countries. The second element is the “collectivity effect” Scientific progress is greatly enhanced by a nonlinear effect. Progress is much faster when many and different types of scientists interact closely together. This is particularly active at the “interface” between disciplines; for instance, a chemistry idea applied to biology. A mathematical concept applied to physics, and so on. In other words 100 scientists of not too different disciplines operating, so to speak, under the same roof, make much more and faster progress than the same 100 people working separately and in isolation.【答案】成就卓越的科学家的成功离不开自己在如艺术、音乐等领域的独特天赋。 7. How does the U.S. rank in the international human-capital standings? Thats a tricky question. Over time the American economy has shown more dynamism and sustained growth than just about any other. But if you look only at the performance of the average American high school student on international tests, you would think it was a nation of dim-witted dullards. What explains this paradox? To some extent, the answer must be the quality of American universities, which are highly efficient, intensely competitive and wonderfully endowedand which increasingly recruit the bust students from around the world. But university professors arent magicians; however skilled they may be, if their inputs from high schools are garbage, their outputs of graduates will not be much better.【答案】美国在国际人力资本排行榜上排第几? 8. 单选题Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.Secretaries, mechanics, and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. Nurses can take classes to increase their knowledge of nursing. If they know more or learn more, then they can get a better job or earn more money.Continuing education classes give some adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from, typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. For example, they can choose a class in almost any language, Chinese, Spanish or English as a second language. There are classes in first aid or classes in sewing. There are also many other types of classes to choose from.Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves. Overweight people can find exercise classes or classes in nutrition. Others can learn how to be good parents, or how to get along with other people. There are many opportunities for adults to continue their learning. Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings, or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.Thousands of people register for continuing education classes each year. They receive no diploma or certificate, and no grade for most of the classes they attend. For them, learning is something they do because they want to.1.Lots of people attend continuing education classes because( ) .2.Some adults take lessons of typing or auto repair to ( ).3.Whats the main idea of Para.7?4.Attending continuing education classes( ) .5.We can learn from the passage that( ) . A.they can also go to church at the same timeB.there are many courses they can choose fromC.learning is something they are interested inD.the classes will help them become more confident问题2选项A.get a college educationB.learn new skillsC.get a certificateD.earn grades问题3选项A.Adults can continue their learning.B.Classes are held for working people.C.Most continuing education classes are in the evening.D.Adults have many opportunities to continue their learning. A.is expensiveB.requires a loanC.is free of chargeD.does not cost much money问题5选项A.adult education is very popularB.college education is not importantC.others kinds of learning are more important than school learningD.continuing education classes teach the same courses that are taught in colleges【答案】第1题:B第2题:B第3题:D第4题:D第5题:A【解析】1. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from.: Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. Many adults are not interested in going to college. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. 9. The supposed “consensus” on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge, after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years. The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th Century. Based on readings from more than 30.000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997. Meanwhile, leading climate scientists yesterday told The Mail on Sunday that, after emitting unusually high levels of energy throughout the 20th Century, the sun is now heading towards a grand minimum in its output, threatening cold summers, bitter winters and a shortening of the season available for growing food. Solar output goes through 11-year cycles, with high numbers of sunspots seen at their peak. We are now at what should be the peak of what scientists call Cycle 24 which is why last weeks solar storm resulted in sightings of the aurora borealis further south than usual. But sunspot numbers are running at less than half those seen during cycle peaks in the 20th Century.Analysis by experts at NASA and the University of Arizona derived from magnetic-field measurements 120,000 miles beneath the suns surface suggest that cycle 25, whose peak is due in 2022, will be a great deal weaker still. According to a paper issued last week by the Met Office, there is a 92 percent chance that both cycle 25 and those taking place in the following decades will be as peak as, or weaker than the Dalton minimum” of 1790 to 1830. In this period, named after the meteorologist John Dalton, average temperatures in parts of Europe fell by 2C. However, it is also possible that the new solar energy slump could be as deep as the “Maunder minimum (after astronomer Edward Maundeo, between 1645 and 1715 in the coldest part of the Little Ice Age when, as well as the Thames frost fairs, the canals of Holland froze solid.【答案】新的气温数据显示,地球在过去15年没有变暖。 10. 单选题Conducting scientific research on this most challenging of groups can be compared to viewing a whale through a keyhole. The hulk of the animal glides past from time to time while we try desperately to figure out what on earth it is. In spite of lots of sparks and smoke, we have so far accomplished little more than a small enlargement of this keyhole. Someday perhaps in the next hundred years we may have a picture-window-sized keyhole and will finally see what the whole whale looks like. But even then the enigma of the whale will stand, undecided, before us.I have been studying whales continuously since 1967. One of the delights of that experience has been discovering that there is no way to get a whale to adopt a human timescale. This is no more possible than it would be for a human to adopt a weasels speed of living. Whales are unhurriable. Its one of their most endearing trails. Nowhere is this more engagingly seen than in trying to figure out what a whale is doing when what you are watching is, for example, play, but you have not yet figured that out. The difficulty comes from the fact that one of the major clues to the function of a behavior pattern is the rhythm of its occurrence. Because we commonly associate play with quick motions, the key to being able to recognize play in whales is learning to think differentlyin terms of long, slow rhythms, where things occur very lingeringly (it would be a comparable problem to learn to recognize play in snails, or sloths, or tortoises). To understand whales one must be deeply patient, must slow way down and be content to observe passively for a long time. Only at the end of a day may one say to oneself, “Now let me see; what did I see? Well, I saw the whale do this, and then it did thisand then this .and then. For heavens sake, it was play I was looking at.” In order to observe whales, you must be willing to set your metronome on adagio. Then, to understand what you have seen, you must fast-forward through your observations by setting your metronome to allegro.During
