Spain and Portugal Separated from the rest of Europe by the Pyrenees Mtns. Isolated them from other European countries. Controlled by the Moors from northern Africa for 400 years. Moors brought Islamic religion, new irrigation, crops and architecture. Expelled by the Catholic monarchs in 1492. Removed Muslims and Jews from the peninsula. Both Spain and Portugal had their greatest colonial influences in South America & Africa. Members of the EU Spain: wine & olive oil, Portugal: cork. Both have democratic govt : Spain has a constitutional monarchy. Both are catholic nations. Mariano Rajoy Prime Minister of Spain King- Juan Carlos I of Spain Capital cities of Madrid, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal are the primary cities of each country. Their languages are derived from Latin and similar to one another.
