My mom was one of those people. My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school walking on my own! When the Great Depression (大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time. Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mothers words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world Holiday Inn. In 1979 my pany had 1, 759 inns in more than fifty countries with an ine of $ 1 billion a year. You may not have started out life in the best situation. Some readers have written in to ask us for the latest information on high quality books on English, so here we introduce two texts that aim to improve spoken English fluency. Lets Speak (Beginner) By Bev Dusuya, Naoko Ozeki and Kevin Bergman ISBN: 96xx359X Speak Up (Pre Intermediate) By Kev Kusuya, Nako Zeki ISBN: 058222805O “Teach the students about your culture and help them talk about their own.” How often are these worthy goals kept from being achieved by the limitations of your beginner level learners? Students at all levels want to talk about culture. Topics include food, shopping, sports, fashion, the roles of men and women health, music and others. These are all chosen from surveys of over 15,000 students about their own interests in cross cultural munication. “Lets Speak” and “Speak Up” share a special but excellent way that allows all students to take part in.The series has questions which start thinking and help collect opinions about personal topics. Conversation practice is provided by using models of basic exchanges on the topic. Also, the cultural information presented in the series es in the form of interesting, relevant facts and ideas from other countries through listening tasks and Culture Quiz exercises. “Lets Speak” is fit for entry level students of all ages. “Speak Up” provides for the needs of higher level beginners. BOOKSHELF C Some schools are pumping music, noises and pleasant smells into the classroom to see if it improves exam results. Could it work? Why do songs stick in our heads? What does your school smell like? Is it noisy or peaceful? It might not seem important, but a growing body of research suggests that smells and sounds can have an impact on learning, performance and creativity. Indeed, some head teachers have recently taken to broadcasting noises and pumping smells into their schools to see whether it can boost grades. Is there anything in it? And if so, what are the implications for the way we work and study? There is certainly some well-established research to suggest that some noises can have a harmful effect on learning. Numerous studies over the past 15 years have found that children attending schools under the flight paths of large airports fall behind in their exam results. Bridget Shield, a professor of acoustics (声学) at London South Bank University, and Julie Dockrell, from the Institute of Education, have been conducting studies on the effects of all sorts of noises, such as traffic and sirens (汽笛), as well as noise generated by the children themselves. When they recreated those particular sounds in an experimental setting while children pleted various learning tasks, they found a significant negative effect on exam scores. “Everything points to a bad impact of the noise on childrens performance, in numeracy(计算能力), in literacy, and in spelling,” says Shield. The noise seemed to have an especially harmful effect on children with special needs.Whether background sounds are beneficial or not seems to depend on what kind of noise it is and the volume. In a series of studies published last year, Ravi Mehta from the College of Business at Illinois and his colleagues tested peoples creativity while exposed to a soundtrack made up of background noises such as coffee-shop chatter and construction-site drilling at different volumes. They found that people were more creative when the background noises were played at a medium level than when volume was low. Loud background noise, however, damaged their creativity. Many teachers all over the world already play music to students in class. Many are inspired by the belief that hearing music can boost IQ in later tasks, the so-called Mozart effect. While the evidence actually suggests its hard to say classical music boosts brainpower, researchers do think pleasant sounds before a task can sometimes lift your mood and help you perform well, says Perham, who has done his own studies on the phenomenon. The key appears to be that you enjoy what youre hearing. “If you like the music or you like the sound even listening to a Stephen King novel then you do better. It doesnt matter about the music.” he says. So, it seems that schools that choose to prevent disturbing noises and create positive soundscapes could enhance the learning of their students, so long as they make careful choices. Yet this isnt the only sense being used to affect learning. Special educational needs students at Sydenham high school in London are being encouraged to revise different subjects in the presence of different smells grapefruit scents for maths, lavender for French and spearmint for history.50. The four questions in the first paragraph are meant to _. A. create some sense of humour to please the readers B. provide the most frequently asked questions in schools nowadays C. declare the purpose of the article: to try to offer keys to those questions D. hold the readers attention and arouse their curiosity to go on reading51. What does the conclusion of the studies of noise conducted by Bridget Shield and Julie Dockrell suggest? A. Peaceful music plays an active role in students learning. B. We should create for school children a more peaceful environment. C. Not all noises have a negative impact on children s performance. D. Children with special needs might be exposed to some particular sounds. 52. Ravi Mehtas experiment indicates that _. A. Students creativity improves in a quiet environment B. we may play some Mozart music while students are learning C. a proper volume of background noises does improve creativity D. noise of coffee-shop chatter is better than that of construction-site drilling53. Towards the positive impact of appropriate background sound and smell on students learning and creativity, the authors attitude is _. A. supportiveB. negative C. ambiguous D. doubtful54. Which of the following is most likely to follow up the passage? A. How pleasant smells affect learning power. B. Experts research into other senses that can improve students grades. C. More successful examples of boosting learning power by using music. D. Debates on whether noises can really have positive effect on students performance. D Hilary Smith belonged to a good family. But by the age of twenty, he had spent all the money the good old family had. He then had some trouble with the bank and was put in prison. He escaped from the prison and ran to Australia without delay. Hilary did not like Australia. What he could do seemed to be one of two things: die or work. Then he remembered that he was not alone in the world. He had an aunt. She was his fathers only sister, but his father used to say she brought no glory to the family. Hilary, of course, tried to discover what she had done. It seemed that she had failed to marry a nobleman. Instead, she had chosen a husband who was connected with “trade”. Of course as soon as she became “Mrs. Parks”, her brother considered her dead. Later on, Mr. Parks died and left her a lot of money; but that did not bring her back to life in her brothers opinion. Hilary discovered his aunts address. Fortunately she remained faithful and honest to him even after she fell ill. So Hilarys star shone again, and soon he moved into her house and lived as fortably as a sailor who had just reached harbor. He had only about six pence in his pocket. One thing was soon clear: his aunt was seriously ill, and nothing could cure her illness. Hilary was very worried. Fate had found a home for him, and was now going to throw him out of it. There was only one thing that could save him: her will. “Will?” she said, “yes, I have made one. That was when I was a girl and had not much money. I left all my money to some religious people.” “Didnt you make another will when you were married?” Hilary asked. His aunt shook her head. “No,” she said in a low voice, “There was no need. When I finally had a lot of money I found I had no relations.” On the next day he went to the public library and examined a book of law. It told him what he already believed. When a woman is married, an earlier will loses its value. A new will must be made. If no new will is made, the money goes to the nearest relation. Hilary knew that he was his aunts only relation. His future was safe. After a few months had passed, Hilarys problems became serious. He badly needed money. He had expensive tastes, and owed a lot of money to shopkeepers. They trusted him because his aunt was rich; but the debt was terrible. Unfortunately his aunt
