A study has showed that the brain makes decisions about 10 seconds before a person realizes it. Experts involved in the study said that looking at brain activity while making a decision, they could predict the choices the subjects would make, before they realized that they had made a decision. Lead researcher John-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist (神经学家)at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, said that the new findings called into questions for “consciousness”of decisions that people make, and might even challenge ideas as to how“free”people are to make a decision at a particular moment.“We think our decisions are conscious, but these data show that consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg,”Nature magazine quoted (引用) him as saying. Thinking the results“quite dramatic”, Frank Tong of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, said that 10 seconds is“a lifetime”in terms of brain activity. During the study, the brains of 14 volunteers were imaged as they performed a decision-making task. The subjects had two buttons before them, each to be operated by a different hand, which they could press when they felt the urge to. They were simultaneously (同时地)shown a stream of letters, which appeared on a screen at half-second intervals (间隔). The volunteers had to remember which letter was showing when they decided to press their button.Upon analysis of the data, the researchers realized that the earliest signal they could catch started seven seconds before the volunteers reported having made their decision. Given the delay of a few seconds in the imaging, they reckoned (估计) that the brain activity could have begun about ten seconds before the conscious decision. The researchers showed that the signals were picked up from a region (区域)called the frontopolar cortex (脑额极皮层),which is located at the front of the brain, immediately behind the forehead. While writing about the observations made during the research in his study report, Haynes said that the frontopolar cortex might be the brain region where decisions are started. He also showed that the next step in the research would be to speed up the data analysis so as to enable his team to predict peoples choices as their brains would make them. 1. Despite countless warnings in recent years about the need to address a potential hunger crisis in poor countries and an energy crisis worldwide, world leaders failed to think ahead. The result is a global food crisis. Wheat, corn and rice prices have more than doubled in the past two years. And oil prices have increased more than three times since the start of 2004. These food-price increases, combined with increasing energy costs, will slow if not stop economic growth in many parts of the world and will even affect political stability. Practical solutions to these problems do exist, but well have to start thinking ahead and acting globally. Here are three steps to ease the current food crisis and avoid the potential for a global crisis. The first is to promote the dramatic success of Malawi, a country in southern Africa, which three years ago established a special fund to help its farmers get fertilizer and seeds with high productivity. Malawis harvest doubled after just one year. An international fund based on the Malawi model would cost a mere $10 per person annually in the rich world, or $10 billion altogether. Second, the U. S. and Europe should abandon their policies of paying partly for the change of food into biofuels. The U. S. government gives farmers a taxpayer-financed payment of 51 cents per gallon of ethanol(乙醇) changed from corn. There may be a case for biofuels produced on lands that do not produce foodstree crops, grasses and wood productsbut theres no case for the government to pay to put the worlds dinner into the gas tank. Third, we urgently need to weather-proof the worlds crops as soon and as effectively as possible. For a poor farmer, sometimes something as simple as a farm pondwhich collects rainwater to be used in dry weathercan make the difference between a good harvest and a bad one. The world has already committed to establishing a Climate Adaptation Fund to help poor regions climate-proof vital economic activities such as food production and health care but has not yet acted upon the promise. 1. An international fund based on the Malawi model would.A. cost each of the developed countries $10 billion per yearB. aim to double the harvest in southern African countries in a yearC. decrease the food prices as well as the energy pricesD. give poor farmers access to fertilizer and highly productive seeds2. With the second step, the author expresses the idea that.A. it is not wise to change food crops into gasB. it is misleading to put tree crops into the gas tankC. we should get alternative forms of fuel in any wayD. biofuels should be developed on a large scale3. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. A rain-collecting pond is a simple safeguard against by weather.B. A Climate Adaptation Fund has been established to help poor regions.C. The world has made a serious promise to build farm ponds.D. It makes a great difference whether we develop wood products or not.4. In the passage, the author calls on us to.A. slow down but not to stop economic growthB. develop tree crops, grasses and wood productsC. achieve economic growth and political stabilityD. act now so as to relieve the global food shortage【参考答案】47.1-4 DAAD 阅读理解-AWalk through the Amazon rainforest today and you will find it is steamy, warm, damp and thick. But if you had been around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted(反应)to the cold, dry climates of the ice ages, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer. Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tones of CO2 each year; equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change? If it gets drier ,will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2 ? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past. Unfortunately, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. To study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen, kept in lake muds. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments (沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery . There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest ,but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled(未取样). So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change. 1. The underlined phrase “mopping up” in the second paragraph means _.A. cleaning up B. taking in C. wiping out D. giving out 答案解析:答案为B。 结合上下文,与mopping up并列的是 “helping to slow global warming”,由此可以推断,mop up 就是去除CO2;并且后面的 “Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tones of CO2 each year”中的 “take in” 也对此进行了呼应,故答案为B。“clean up”意为 “清洁”; “wipe out” 意为 “消灭,彻底摧毁”; “give out”意为“分发,散发”。2. How will the Amazon rainforest react to future climate change?A. Itll get drier and continue to remove C O 2.B. Itll remain steamy, warm, damp and thickC. Itll get warmer and then colder and drier.D. There is no exact answer up to present. 结合第三段首句 “Unfortunately, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult.” 和最后一句 “So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.” D。3. Whats the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Its important to drill deep down into lake sediments to collect information.B. Its impossible to prove how climate changes in the Amazon rainforest.C. Its hard to collect information for studies of the past climate in the Amazon rainforest.D. Its necessary to have specialized equipment and machinery to study the past climate. 从第三段的最后一句话 “So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.” 4. The best title for this passage may probably be_.A. Studies of the Amazon B. Climates of the AmazonC. Secrets of the Rainforests D. Changes of the Rainforests答案解析:答案为C。
