FILTON, just outside Bristol, is where Britains fleet of Concorde supersonic(超音速的)airliners was built. There, something remarkable is being created. Little by little a machine is “printing” a complex titanium bracket (钛合金支架), about the size of a shoe, which normally would have to be cut from a solid block of metal. Brackets are only the beginning. The researchers at Filton have a much bigger ambition: to print the entire wing of an airliner. Unrealistic as this may seem, many other people are using 3D printing technology to create similarly remarkable things. These include medical implants, jewellery, football boots designed for individual feet, lampshades, racing-car parts, solid-state batteries and customized mobile phones. Some are even making mechanical devices (仪器). At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Peter Schmitt, a PhD student, has been printing something that is like the workings of a grandfather clock. It took him a few attempts to get right, but eventually he removed the plastic clock from a 3D printer, hung it on the wall and pulled down the counterweight. It started ticking. Engineers and designers have been using 3D printers for more than a decade, but mostly to make original types quickly and cheaply before they embark on the expensive business of tooling up a factory to produce the real thing. As 3D printers have become more able to work with a broader range of materials, including production-grade plastics and metals, the machines are increasingly being used to make final products too. More than 20% of the output of 3D printers is now final products rather than original types, according to Terry Wohlers, who runs a research firm specializing in the field. He predicts that this will rise to 50% by 2020. 1. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Filton is in the centre of Bristol. B. Peter tried to print a clock, but in vain. C. a remarkable metal bracket is being created. D. 3D printing technology is available to all of us. 2. The underlined word “embark” probably means “_”. A. workB. landC. dependD. fix3. We can conclude from the last paragraph that _. A. Terry Wohlers s firm will make great profitsB. the technology of 3D printers will be widely adoptedC. 3D printers have been in use for at least 100 yearsD. engineers and designers prefer printing original products 4. The passage is developed mainly in the form of _. A. time and events B. definition and descriptionC. contrast and conclusion D. examples and statements【参考答案】14、 CABD社会文化(阅读理解)由 (2012浙江,C)改编Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started.Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence,“In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence”.Given that this is the case, why arent students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars,or stay physically fit?First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable.A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱).For example,a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime.Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isnt in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决):stay calm.Once the student feels calmer,he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well.Rude words,name-calling,and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire.On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control. After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy (策略) for conflict resolution:listening.Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting.Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speakers position. Then the two people should change roles. Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesnt mean trying to figure out whats wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example,a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things.Students need to ask themselves questions such as these:How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of?As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller.Even if it doesnt, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution. There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesnt mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility,“64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom;75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation;and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”.Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.1.This article is mainly about .A.the lives of school childrenB.the cause of arguments in schoolsC.how to analyze youth violenceD.how to deal with school conflicts2.From Paragraph 2 we can learn that .A.violence is more likely to occur at lunchtimeB.a small conflict can lead to violenceC.students tend to lose their temper easilyD.the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight3.Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5?()A.To find out who is to blame.B.To get ready to try new things.C.To make clear what the real issue is.D.To figure out how to stop the shouting match.4.After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta,it was found that .A.there was a decrease in classroom violenceB.there was less student cooperation in the classroomC.more teachers felt better about themselves in schoolsD.the teacher-student relationship greatly improved5.The writers purpose for writing this article is to .A.complain about problems in school educationB.teach students different strategies for school lifeC.advocate teaching conflict management in schoolsD.inform teachers of the latest studies on school violence语篇解读:本文为议论文,属于社会生活类。 根据第二段第二句“.most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱).” 根据第五段倒数第二句“As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller.” Dear Kind-Trustee-Who-Sends-Orphans-to-College,Here I am! I traveled yesterday for four hours in a train. Its a funny feeling, isnt it? I never rode in one before.College is the biggest, most puzzling place I get lost whenever I leave my room. I will write you a description later when Im feeling less confused; also I will tell you about my lessons. Classes dont begin until Monday morning, and this is Saturday night. But I wanted to write a letter first just to get acquainted. It seems strange to be writing letters to somebody you dont know. It seems strange for me to be writing letters at all Ive never written more than three or four in my life, so please overlook it if these are not a model kind. Before leaving yesterday morning, Mrs. Lippett and I had a very serious talk. She told me how to behave all the rest of my life, and especially how to behave towards the kind gentleman who is doing so much for me. I must take care to be very respectful. But how can one be very respectful to a person who wishes to be called John Smith? Why couldnt you have picked out a name with a little personality? I might as well write letters to Dear Flagpole or Dear Clothes-line.I have been thinking about you a great deal this summer; having somebody take an interest in me after all these years makes me feel as though I had found a sort of family. It seems as though I belonged to somebody now, and its a very comfortable feeling. I must say, however, that when I think about you, my imagination has very little to work upon. There are just three things that I know: I, You are tall. . You are rich. . You hate girls.I suppose I might call you Dear Mr. Girl-Hater. Only thats rather rude to me. Or Dear Mr. Rich-Man, but thats rude to you, as though money were the only important thing about you. Besides, being rich is such a very external quality. Maybe you wont stay rich all your life; lots of very clever men get broke in Wall Street. But at least you will stay tall all your life! So Ive decided to call you Dear Daddy-Long-Legs. I hope you wont mind. Its just a private pet name we wont tell Mrs. Lippett. The ten oclock bell is going to ring in two minutes. Our day is divided into sections by bells. We eat and sleep and study by bells. Its very lifeful. There it goes! Lights out. Good night.Observe how precisely I obey rules due to my training in the John Grier Home. 36. Jerusha felt “confused” because _.A. she had never written to the trustee beforeB. she was not familiar with the college yetC. she could never find the way to her homeD. she had never traveled on a train before【答案】B【解析】细节理解题。 B。37. Jerusha thought that she couldnt be very respectful to “John Smith” because _.A. he was a total stranger to her B. she was sure it was a false identityC. the name was too common D. nobody would like to be called that time【答案】B【解析】细节理解题。 38. According to Jerusha, being rich may be _.A. tentativeB. unimaginableC. traditional D. rude【答案】A【解析】细节理解题。A. 39. The fact that her day is “divided into sections by bells” makes Jerusha feel _.A. busyB. restricted by rulesC. pressed for timeD. full of energy【答案】D【解析】细节理解题。倒数第二段中的“Its very lifeful.” D。40. Jerusha decided to call the trustee Dear Daddy-Long-legs _. A. in order to show her respect for himB. because it was one of his inner qualityC. in order to make them feel closer to each other D. because she had always wanted a father【答案】C【解析】细节理解题。
