四川名山县2017高考英语阅读理解(一轮)基础练习(3)阅读理解。An idea that started in Seattles public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same tome.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the If All of Seattle Read the Same Book project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong kong.In Chicago, the mayor(市长)appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the One Book, One Chicago program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character. The only problem arose in New York ,where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point ,putting all their energy And passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultinatel was Nancy points out,the level of sucicess is not meastured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process.or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.1.What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?A.To invite authors to guide readers.B.To encourage people to read and share.C.To involve people in communnity service.D.To promote the friendship between cities.2.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the projict?A.They had little interest in reading.B.They were too busy to read a book.C.They came from many different backgroundsD.They lacked support from the locat government3.According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?A.In large communities with little sense of unityB.In large cities where libraries are far from homeC.In medium-sized cities with a diverse populationD.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached4.The underlined words“shared a word”in Paragraph 5 probably mean A.exchanged ideas with each otherB.discussed the meaning of a wordC.gamed life experience D.used the same language5.According to Nacy, the degree of students of the project is judged by A.the careful selection of a proper bookB.the growing popularity of the writersC.the number of people who benefit from reading.D.the number of books that each person reads.【参考答案】1-5、BCDAC2016高考英语-阅读理解训练。阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。 Musiclessonsinearlychildhoodbringaboutchangesinthebrainthatcouldimproveitsperformancefarintoadulthood,researcherssay.Brainscansofyoungadultsshowedthosewhohadformalmusicaltrainingbeforesevenhadthickerbrainareasdealingwithhearingandself-awareness Thefindingsnotehowbraindevelopmentcanbeinfluencedbytheagewhenchildrenstarttolearnamusicalinstrument, andhowthosechangescancontinueintolaterlife. She hoped the results might help parents decide when was the best for their children to learn an instrument. The brains cortex(皮层) plays a leading role in ones abilities, from thought and language to memory and attention. The area matures rapidly in the early years of life, and its development could be affected more if a person starts musical training before it fully matures. Wang studied 48 Chinese students aged between 19 and 21 who had received formal music training for at least a year sometime between the ages of 3 and 15. Each had a scan to measure the thickness of the brains cortex. After considering sex and the number of years spent having music lessons, Wang found that musical training that started before seven appeared to thicken areas of the brain involved in language skills and executive function, which is a persons ability to plan and accomplish tasks.“Were not sure why these changes occur, but a reasonable explanation is that early starters might depend more on hearing clues(线索) when learning music, since it might be more difficult for younger children to read music,” Wang said.32. As is often the case when a check bounces, I soon found that this womans phone number was no longer in service. A check of the caller ID. told us the call had come from the managers office of the apartment building where our customer lived. We left a message with the manager and within the hour our call was returned.I told our customer gently, sympathetically that a check she had written had been returned for lack of funds. I told her I always want to let people know about returned checks quickly because the huge fees the banks charge can cause more checks to be returned and more fees to be charged. I told her I hoped she could contact the bank and get things straightened out before her problems got worse. I also told her, gently once more, that I hated to add to her problems but she would owe us a fee for the returned check because the bank charges us a fee when a check is returned. She told me she had difficulties because of being on a fixed income and being in poor health. She told me she had no children but had raised several that belonged to her husband and after living with him thirty years he had left her for another woman. Finally, after she had promised to pay, I told her not only do I care about her situation, but she taught me something. If you dont react with anger, you may learn what the real problem is and may in some way be able to help, if only with a little sympathy.1. Why did the author try to call the woman?A. The woman had to pay the check as well as a fee for the returned check.C. The author will help the woman overcome her difficulties by paying for her.D. The check written by the woman had been returned because of the wrong number.4. What is the purpose of this text?A. To solve a problem. B. To present a research result.C. Some groups believe wolves should be killed. Other people believe wolves must be protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness (荒野) For Killing Wolves In Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However1aws were established to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their furSo the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family. People in the wilderness also hunt deer for foodMany of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the wilderness plant lifeWhen the deer cant find enough food, they die If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey(猎物)will disappear some dayAnd the wolves willtooSo we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness to balance the ecologyIf we killed more wolves,we would save them and their prey from dying outWed also save some farm animals In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for foodFarmers want the government to send biologists to study the problemThey believe it necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small wolf population Against Killing Wolves If you had lived long ago,you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolfAccording to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people for foodEven today, the stories of the “big bad wolfwill not disappear But the fact is wolves are afraid of peopleand they seldom travel in areas where there is a human smellWhen wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very youngor the sick and injured .The strongest survive .No kind of animal would have survived through the centuries if the weak members had livedAnd has always been a law of nature. Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves,we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found wolves and their prey living in balanceThe wolves keep the deer population from becoming too large, and that keeps a balance in the wilderness plant life The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live are being used by peopleEven if wilderness land is not used directly for human needsthe wolves cant always find enough food .So they travel to the nearest source, which is often a farmThen there is dangerThe “big bad wolf” has arrived! And everyone knows what happens next( ) 1. During the eighteenth century,it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot as a dump site.Residents or trash haulers(垃圾拖运者)would transport household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site.Periodically(定期的)some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by. Factories, mills, and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of.Those located on rivers often just dumped the unwanted remains into the water.Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem. Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modern society. The first problem is space Dumps, which are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas.Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose.Property is either too expensive or too close to residential(住宅区的) neighborhoods.Long-distance trash hauling has been a common practice but once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is almost nonexistent. Awareness(意识) of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers, ground water, land and air is a price people can no longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste, however, continues to grow. Recycling efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to take part.Even he most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 Percent of a citys reusable waste.36.The most suitable title for this passage would be _.A.Places for Disposing Waste B.Waste Pollution DangersC.Ways of Getting Rid of Waste D.Waste Disposal Problem提示:第一段告诉了读者本文的中心思想。答案:D37.During the 18th century, people disposed their waste in many ways EXCEPT for _.A.burying it B.recycling itC.burning it D.throwing it into rivers提示:从文章第二、三段可知。答案:B38.What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?A.Farm areas accept waste from the city in modern society.B.There is cheap land to bury waste in modern society.C.It is difficult to find space to bury waste in modern society.D.Ways to deal with waste in modern society stay the same.提示:实际所使用的垃圾处理方法是烧、埋、倾倒进河里。第四段论述了这些方法在现代社会的不可接受性。文中例数了用这些方法处理垃圾的问题,可见在方法上没有进展。答案:D39.The main purpose of writing this article is to _.A.draw peoples attention to waste managementB.warn people of the pollution dangers we are facingC.call on people to take part in recycling programsD.tell people a better way to get rid of the waste提示:文章介绍了过去与现在的垃圾处理方法,论述了这种方法所带来的问题和人们对这一问题的认识。最后一段强调利用回收的方法依然不能解决问题的严峻形势。文章旨在引起人们对废物管理的进一步关注。答案:A
