It caught the eye of M.S. Hershey, who saw the potential for chocolate. He installed chocolate machinery in his factory in Lancaster, and produced his first chocolate bars in 1894.Other Americans began mixing in other materials to make up new candy bars throughout the end of the 1890s and the early 1900s. But it was World War I that really brought attention to the candy bar.The U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps requested various American chocolate manufacturers to provide 20 to 40 pound blocks of chocolate to be shipped to quartermaster bases. The blocks were cut into smaller pieces and distributed to American soldiers in Europe. Eventually the task of making smaller pieces was turned back to the manufacturers. By the end of the war when the soldiers arrived the American candy bar business was assured. Why? Because the returning soldiers had fond of chocolate candy and wanted more of the same. As a result. from that time on and through the 1920s, candy bar manufacturers became established throughout the United States, and as many as 40,000 different candy bars appeared on the scene. The original candy bar industry had its start on the eastern coast in such cities as Philadelphia Boston, and New York. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast.Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures could be obtained, the number of people who didnt have breakfast increased by 33%-from 8.8 million to 11.7 million-according to the Chicago-based Market Research Corporation of America. For those who dislike eating breakfast, however, there is some good news.Several studies in the last few years have shown that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. Going without breakfast does not affect work, said Arnold E.Bender, former professor of nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, nor does giving people breakfast improve work. Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better work is surprisingly inadequate(不充分) ,and most of the recent work involves children, not adults. The literature, says one researcher, Dr.Earnest Polite at the University of Texas, is poor.Which of these is mentioned in the second paragraph?问题1选项A.The number of the people who skip breakfast has increased.B.Many people fill their cars with gasoline in the morning.C.8.8 million people got involved in a study on eating habits.D.A company carried out a research in 1983.【答案】A【解析】16. 单选题60_问题1选项A.Where are you going todayB.Thats not our busC.Ill catch up on my reading to kill timeD.There isnt a cloud in the skyE.Did you catch the news todayF.How long have you been waitingG.Have a nice dayI.Dont forget your book【答案】G【解析】17. 单选题Passage FourUsing less energy around the home is easier than you might think, saving you money while creating a heathier, more comfortable living space for you and your family. Changing a few old habits can make an impact on your energy bill, your comfort and the environment. Here are some handy tips to make your house more energy-efficient.Lower the heat If your home has adjustable central heating, lowering the room temperature even slightly can make a difference. You may not feel it, but your wallet will. It is even more advisable to control temperatures at different times of the day.Hang clothes out to dryIf the weather allows it, head outside and dry your laundry on a clothesline. The sunlight will help eliminate bacteria and dust. While clothes dryers get the job done faster, they also use up energy. By hanging your clothes out youll be cutting greenhouse gases by about three kilograms per load.Take advantage of natural lightInstalling large windows on the northern side of your house can help you make use of sunlights natural warmth. To stay cool indoors on hot summer days, install blinds(百叶窗) to block the heavy sun. Put your desk near the window, then you dont need a lamp in the daytime.Wrap(裹)your pipesBe sure your hot-water pipes are properly wrapped. In an average home, heating water accounts for more than one-quarter of the energy bill. Why let warmth go to waste before it reaches you?Choose the right size for appliances(家用电器)When the time comes to replace appliances, select those that are both energy-efficient and of the appropriate size for your needs. Dont buy bigger ones just because you can. What benefit may using less energy at home bring about?问题1选项A.Having a healthier living environment.B.Improving your work efficiency.C.Keeping old habits unchanged.D.Enlarging your living space.【答案】A【解析】18. 单选题My secretary usually opens my post_ its marked“private”.问题1选项A.unlessB.ifC.asD.for【答案】A【解析】19. 单选题28_问题1选项A.amountB.purityC.natureD.quality【答案】D【解析】20. 单选题Passage ThreeAs recently as three decades ago, many Americans believed that using credit was an unwise and dangerous way to pay for what they bought. Some even thought that owing money to a store or a credit company was something to be ashamed of.Good citizens, they believed, always bought what they wanted with real money and they paid the full price immediately.Today, however, all that has changed.Credit, as some observers have noted, has become a way of life in the United States.More and more Americans now are depending on those small pieces of plastic, credit cards, to pay for large purchases such as televisions, record players or furniture. Many people today would consider it unusual not to use a credit card to pay for a costly restaurant dinner, a hotel room or an airline trip. And there are some situations in which Americans must have credit cards. If they want the temporary use of a car, for example, they first must give the car rental company the number of their credit card. That number is considered a guarantee that they will return the car and pay for using it.Credit cards offer two major services to Americans.First of all, they are easier and safer to carry than large amounts of money.Second, they permit people to borrow, to have the immediate pleasure of owning something, even if they do not have enough money to pay for it at the time. With credit cards people pay for goods or services at the end of each month instead of when they buy them. And when the time does come to pay, most credit cards offer people a choice. They can pay all of what they owe for the month or they can just pay usually between 5 and 10 percent of what they owe. What do Americans feel about using credit cards nowadays according to the passage?问题1选项A.They consider it valuableB.They regard it as a shameC.They think it dangerousD.They find it quite convenient【答案】D【解析】
