Most of Hawthornes stories are set in Puritan New England and of Puritan America. It is a story of crime, sin, guilt, punishment and expiation, in the rigid moral climate of the 17th century New England. Hester Prynne is thethe fiction. All through the novel it shows society in New England for the following seven years, shamed and alienated from the rest of thecommunity,independent, stoic and warm-, and she receives approval andrespect from“ angel ”The. shame attached to the scarlet letterfromthe sinner to the saint.The first part introduces the background of the author NathanielHawthorne and Puritanism, and the concept of original sin that the story.In the second part Hester roles as a sinner is analyzed against the background of the puritan society in the 17th century and in comparisonwith Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. Hester s role as a saint is expatiatedin the third part through discussing for love and life, and most importantly, rebellion against Puritan society. The alternation of Hesterand Dimmesdales roles as the sinner and the saint in day and night is also analyzed in this part. The fourth part views the sin and saint in anotherlight, which focuses on analyzing Hawthornes contradictions in indispensable part of undergraduate education, the writing of thesis playsan important role in developing the studentsability to comprehensively apply learnt knowledge and skills to practical use.
