He was obsessed with this desirehe ate, slept, and walked with one and only dream: to die, having accomplished every single thing he was able to accomplish. There were so many things he could do. He felt like the whole world could be his, _16_ he set his mind to it. He knew that his _17_ had no limits. He knew that he could accumulate _18_ that would dwarf (使相形见绌) that of ancient kings; he knew that he could _19_ books that would shake the minds of generations; he knew that he could _20_ things that would forever change the lives of millions of people. He lived, constantly feeling the power withinand that power knew no bounds. There was only one problem: having such a potential, but only one _21_, he had to make a choice. He had to decide where to _22_ all of his ability. Making that decision was extremely hard, for any _23_ meant cutting off some future achievements. In the meantime, he went to school, graduated, found a job, married, and _24_ children. And he spent every minute of his spare time trying to decide _25_ he should bring his potential into full play.(后续内容,请见下页。)16A.before Bsince Cif Dthough17A.wisdom Bpotential Cworld Dfreedom18A.courage Binterest Cknowledge Dpower19A.write Bread Cbuy Dedit20A.invent Bacquire Cadopt Ddestroy21A.step Blife Cchance Dcondition22A.promote BaccumulateCincrease Dapply23A.choice Bmistake Cfailure Deffort24A.assisted Bloved Craised Dpunished25A.why Bwhere Cwhen DwhetherTime went by, and he grew _26_. Some roads he used to dream about became closed to him. But there was still so much he could accomplish. One day, a sudden chest pain made him come home early. He dragged his feet to the bathroom. There, feeling _27_, he looked in the mirror. A wornout, grayhaired man stared back at him. He looked _28_ into these eyes and, all of a sudden, _29_ one simple truth. The next moment, the pain came again, and his heart stopped _30_forever.The truth that came upon him was rather simple: People only flatter themselves (自以为是,自鸣得意) by thinking that they could have _31_ this or that if not for suchandsuch circumstances. Yet this is nothing but _32_. You simply lack something that is _33_ for achieving that goal youve never reacheda talent, a skill, willpower, _34_ something else. When my parents bought the house, in 1982, they were only two years older than I am now. I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house Id still be living in almost 30 years later. It seemed ridiculous. On a practical level, theres no way I could afford to buy a house anytime soon. More importantly, I wouldnt want to. Im not sure where Ill be living in two years, or what kind of job Ill have. And I dont think Ill be ready to settle down and stay in one place. So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. When our parents were our age, theyd gotten their education, chosen a career, and were starting to settle into responsible adult lives. My friends and I“Generation Y”still arent sure what we want to do with our lives. Whatever we end up doing, we want to make sure were happy doing it. Wed rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place. Wed rather spend our money on travel than put it in a savings account. This casual attitude toward responsibility has caused some critics to call my generation “arrogant”, “impatient”, and “overprotected”. Some of these complaints have a point. As children we were encouraged to succeed in school, but also to have fun. We grew up in a world full of technological innovation: cellphones, the Internet, instant messaging, and video games. Our parents looked to rise vertically (垂直地)starting at the bottom of the ladder and slowly making their way to the top, on the same track, often for the same company. That doesnt apply to my generation. Because of that, it may take us longer than our parents to arrive at responsible, stable adulthood. But thats not necessarily a bad thing. In our desire to find satisfaction, we will work harder, strive for ways to keep life interesting, and gain a broader set of experiences and knowledge than our parents generation did. By Ariel Lewiton36When the author walked through her parents house, she _. Awas frightened that she had no idea what she wanted from lifeBstarted to think about her own lifeCrealized she should buy a houseDwondered why her parents had settled down early37What is the main “generation gap” between the author and her friends and their parents according to the article?ATheir attitude toward high technology. BTheir ways of making their way to the top. CTheir attitude toward responsibility. DTheir ways of gaining experience. 38Which of the following might the author agree with?AIts all right to try more before settling down. BIts better to take adult responsibility earlier. CIt involves too much effort to rise vertically. DIts ridiculous to call her generation “arrogant”. 39What can we conclude from the article?AThe author is envious of her parents enjoying a big house at her age. BGrowing up in a hitech world makes “Generation Y” feel insecure about relationships. C“Generation Y” people dont want to grow up and love to be taken care of by their parents. DThe author wrote this article so that others would be able to understand her generation better. 40What is the main theme of the article?AThe sudden realization of growing up. BA comparison between lifestyles of generations. CCriticisms of the young generation. DThe factors that have changed the young generation.1.C考查分词作状语的用法。be concerned about意为“为担心”。 set down 写下。 look for 寻找;take in 欺骗,吸收; give up 放弃。 go through 经历;经受;go into 进入;look through 浏览;look into 调查。 add to “使(数量)增加;使(规模)扩大”。 make for 有利于,促成;focus on 集中于;devote to 献身于。 in case意为“以免,万一”;as if意为“好像”;in order that意为“为了”;only if意为“只有”。 on purpose 故意地。 你认为他是故意这样做的吗?at present 现在; at the end 在结束时; right away 立刻。 It/This is the first/secondtime that从句中用现在完成时。 a great deal of与a large amount of意为“大量的”,均修饰不可数名词;C项本身有误,应为plenty of。 He looked closely into these eyes表示“仔细地看了看自己的眼睛”,所以选D项,用closely。 I wandered through my parents house, I had a sudden, scary realization. I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house Id still be living in almost 30 years later. It seemed ridiculousMore importantly, I wouldnt want to和第三段So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. settle into responsible adult lives. My friends and I“Generation Y”still arent sure what we want to do with our livesWed rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place.
