When you write post titles from a copywriting standpoint, you want them to be catchy and draw the reader in. When you create the title tag for a Web page, you want to properly use your target keywords, as well as synonyms and other semantically linked keywords. These two important SEO considerations are often at odds with each other.The SEO Title Tag plug-in solves this problem by allowing you to define a custom title tag for each and every page of your Web site, without making any adjustments to your post titles. Now you can have both a catchy title for your readers and a keyword-rich title for search-engine ranking purposes. This prevents you from having to compromise either aspect of your site and saves you the time it would take to create a title that works fairly well for both. Instead, you can spend your time writing two separate titles that each serves a purpose far better than a hybrid title would.The SEO Title Tag plug-in allows you to set title tags for “secondary” Web pages such as 404 error pages, or tag pages. A 404 error page appears when a visitor tries to access a Web page that does not exist on your site. Of course, you do not want a title that is optimized for ranking your error page, but in this case the plug-in would be used to offer a short and concise title insteadIf you decide to use a tag cloud on your Web site, each individual tag has its own page. A tag cloud is a visual depiction of user-generated tags. Each Web page lists all the posts that were given that particular tag. The plug-in allows you to easily manipulate the title tag for each tag page.A primary advantage of using the SEO Title Tag plug-in is that it allows you to quickly add custom title tags to your Web site's internal search results pages. This can greatly increase the number of Web pages contained in your site, and can prevent a situation from arising where you have several hundred pages indexed with the same exact title.The default 'out of the box'version of WordPressdoes not systematically optimize description meta tags. However, WordPress description tag plug-ins that enable you to easily optimize description meta tags are available. Although keyword and description meta tags are not considered as important as they were in the past, using them is still a good habit to have, and they may eventually be weighed more heavily in the future. Of these tags, the meta description tag has retained the largest value. Often, this tag appears as the short description snippet in the search-engine results for your Web page.The Add Meta Tags WordPress plug-in provides several options for you to optimize your meta tags. The first option is to allow the Add Meta Tags plug-in to automatically populate the description tag for you. Although this option automates the description tag, it is not ideal because it pulls an excerpt of content from the page that may or may not be representative of the page as your description.If you prefer to have more control, the second option allows you to define a custom description meta tag for every page of your Web site. Although this can be a tedious task if you already have hundreds of pages, it is a rather small addition if you are just starting out and are planning ahead. Adding a custom description to your Web pages should take only a few seconds.A slightly more advanced use of the Add Meta Tags plug in is to rework the description tags of Web pages that are already ranking well. If the description meta tag is correctly appearing as the two-line description in the search-engine result for your Web page, adjusting the description can have an impact on your click-through rate from that listing. This requires continuous testing, but the testing pays off in the form of more traffic when you find the optimal description.In addition to providing optimization options for your meta description tags, the AddMeta Tags plug-in for WordPress allows you to optimize your meta keyword tags. The meta keywords tag is worth far less than it used to be, but is still used for data retrieval by Yahoo and may be considered by other search engines.The keyword tag is a good place to include common synonyms or abbreviations that may seem awkward or out of place in your actual body text. However, do not expect this addition to make more than a minimal impact on your Web site performance in the search engines.If you are going to tweak the description meta tag of a page, make sure you keep a copy of your previous descriptions so you can easily switch back if you notice a drop in the click-through rate. Constant testing also makes the process of writing descriptions for new pages much easier.Try to use your target keyword and its common variations at least once in your description. The keyword appears in bold in the search-engine results and hopefully catches the surfer's eye. The more attractive your title and description are, the more clicks you receive from your rankings.In 2005, Google introduced the XML sitemap format, and in 2006 it was adopted by Yahoo, MSN, and ask.This gave publishers a standard format to follow for creating one sitemap that the top search engines could use. You can find specifics about the protocol at www.sitemaps.org.Because blogs can become very large, a sitemap is often needed to ensure that the major search engines can locate, crawl, and index each individual Web page.However, creating a sitemap by hand every time you make a new blog post gets very boring and redundant.Thankfully, there is a WordPress plug-in called Google Sitemaps Generator for WordPress that takes all the work out of maintaining an up-to-date sitemap.Once the plug-in is correctly installed, your sitemap is automatically rebuilt each time you make a new post. Not only that, the plug-in also pings the major search engines to alert them that you have updated your sitemap and added new content. This should bring the search-engine spiders to your site, and then direct them to your newly added Web page or pages.This plug-in makes getting your Web site fully indexed by Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask incredibly easy. The more pages you have indexed, the more chances you have of being returned as a search result. This plug-in is free, and has consistently been updated to match each update to the WordPress blogging software. However, the developer does acceptonations for his time and effort.The Google Sitemaps Generator for WordPress provides you an easy way to make sure your WordPress blog includes a Google sitemap. Providing Google with a valid list of all your pages is an incredibly helpful addition to the process of getting your blog fully indexed by Google.Although there are certain aspects of search-engine optimization that require an attention to detail and interpretation that cannot be done automatically by a script or program, certain tasks are able to be fully automated. Whenever possible without sacrificing quality, you should make an effort to automate parts of your work. This not only saves you valuable time that could be spent doing more productive work, it also keeps your motivation levels high. Having to perform excessive amounts of mundane grunt work can kill your inspiration to work fairly quickly, so you should automate whenever and wherever you can.Keep an eye out for updates to the WordPress system. Often, developers of popular extensions and plug-ins are ahead of the curve, but you do not want to update your copy of WordPress until you know your plug-ins can handle the switch.One of the shortcomings of WordPress from the SEO perspective is the presence of canonicalization and duplicate content issues.Canonicalization problems (in this sense) refer to the presence of multiple URLs that all return the same Web page.All the above URLs would commonly refer to the exact same page. However, it is entirely possible for a Webserver to return separate files for each request. This is a problem often overlooked by many Webmasters, but it can be very detrimental to your SEO efforts. If you have 100 links pointing to a Web page, but half the links use the www version, and the other half use the non-www version , your backlinks are being spread out over two separate URLs, and you are losing out on the weight that each of those links pass to your Web site.This can also lead to duplicate content issues, or the exact same text appearing on multiple Web pages. If the search engines crawl your site and find the exact same content at six different URLs, which one will they rank for your targeted term? Which version will your visitors link to?There are no certain answers to these questions. Your best bet is to make sure you have all your permalinks and page URLs in order from the beginning to remove any of these issues.Thankfully these issues with WordPress can be sorted out easily by the addition of the Permalink Redirect plug-in.This plug-in keeps your link architecture clean and ensures thateach page is accessible only through a single URL.It also redirects all variations of a URL to the correct version.Competition for top organic rankings can be fierce. In fact, if you do not ensure that your site is properly protected from these potential canonicalization and duplicate issues, other less-ethical Webmasters may use those flaws against you. By setting up links to the alternate URLs of your content, your competition can potentially create duplicate content problems within your Web site and hinder your ability to rank well on the major search engines.If you are not using WordPress, visit www.apache.org to learn more about creating your own custom htaccess file, which can handle your canonicalization issues.
