Practical Techniques for Language Teaching Students can be silent, but still involvedyoung (and not so young! ) teachers tend to talk too much. In an effort to counteract this, training course encourage them to reduce teacher talking time and increase student talking time. This is often justified on the grounds that its the students who need the practice. This advise is true - as far as it goes. Of course students should not be left listening to the teacher droning on, of course students should be involved in the lesson. But that is very different from saying that all students should be encouraged to speak, or that the student who is not talking is not participating. it is the teachers job to involve everybody, but necessarily to involve everybody in the same way. Some students can participate fully while saying very little. This can be frustrating for the teacher, but it is important to realise that you are there to adapt to and help the students - not to impose your demands on them- creating stress and reducing learning- and certainly not in an effort to change their personalities. If you are sensitive to the people around you,it is easy to tell the difference between students who are bored, and students who are silent but involved. In the former case, perhaps you need to change what you are doing; in the latter case, we suggest that you should respect the students personal decision. Many students may genuinely enjoy listening to you, or to other students and, if they are relaxed, the language that they are hearing can be of real benefit to them. Learn to respect the fact that students may be involved in learning, without necessarily making a contribution to your idea of a good lesson.
