Jane Austen (16 December 1775 18 July 1817),an English novelist. Her romantic fiction set among the landed gentry, earning her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Irony: is one of Austens most characteristic and most discussed literary techniques. She contrasts the plain meaning of a statement with the comic, undermining the meaning of the original to create ironic disjunctions. Free Indirect Speech（自由间接引语）: Austen is most renowned for her development of free indirect speech, a technique pioneered by 18th-century novelists Henry Fielding and Frances Burney.,Austens novels appeared in the early 19th century which swept away the tide of false romanticism, inherited and developed the outstanding realistic tradition of 18th century, and prepared for the appearance of the climax of realism novels in 19th century. Her works which revealed the true world from a small point and made contribution to changing the philistinism in novel creation, became an important connecting link in the history of the English novel.
