Time length.B Im Andrew Siegel and this is my garden. This is where my family and I grow a lot of different vegetables, flowers and herbs. Gardening has been really important to my family because it gives us an opportunity to spend time outside together, away from all the electronics. Especially for my five-year-old, it really gives her an opportunity to be in touch with natureall the little animals, insects and things that come out here. We find that a lot of the things that we plan for in the garden dont always go the way that wed like them to, and some of the things that we dont plan for become what we enjoy the most that year. So its something that my family and I have learned: To appreciate(欣赏) all of it.My advice for beginner gardeners is to just start. Get a pot, get a little bit of dirt, get a tomato plant or whatever plant you want and just get started.I think sometimes it seems a little challenging. Trust me, it does not need to be perfect. You will enjoy every little thing you get out of it.Gardening has taught me patience, something I dont naturally have a lot of. It takes weeks, takes months before the work you put into it comes out. You learn not only to be patient, in that end product, but youve also learned that, after years of gardening, the end product is just part of it.The journey of growing has become much more important to me than the actual produce that we get in the end. Nothing has been so valuable as the time I spend out here. Im by no means in a farmland, but I do have my own little piece of what I consider heaven, and Ive really learned to appreciate every little momentevery insect, every plant, every flowerand when you can appreciate it in that way, theres nothing better.24. What does the underlined word “five-year-old” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. The author. B. The authors daughter.C. The insect. D. The little animal.25. What is the most important for Andrew Siegel in gardening?A. Planting different vegetables and flowers.B. Staying at home together with her family.C. Enjoying the whole process of growing.D. Harvesting what the family planted.26. Which of the following can be the best title?A. The Joysof GardeningB. The Benefitsof GardeningC. Being in Touch with NatureD. Being Patient with LifeCOne of Australias most famous natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the worlds largest coral reef. The reef contains a large variety of life and over 3000 reef systems and hundreds of islands with some of the worlds most beautiful beaches. Because of its natural beauty, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the worlds most sought after tourist attractions. However, for the past few years, the news about corals has been discouraging. Currently, the reef is threatened by climate change, tourism, water pollution, and overfishing. Agricultural fertilizer(肥料) runoff from Australian farms also has caused the widespread growth of sea-plants, which absorb most of the nutrients(养分) and leave little remaining for the living coral reef and the animals that live in it. “What has changed is the increasing importance of climate change as a greater threat than the others,” says David Wachenfeld, a scientist of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Coral reefs are extremely sensitive(敏感的) to warming ocean temperatures. In a report on April 28, the Australian government said it set aside $500 million to help protect corals. The money will be spent on reducing water pollution from agriculture, fighting coral-killing starfish, reef monitoring, and research on climate influence.Though the Australian investment is welcome, it will at best only delay coral deaths. Its too little, too late, as a leading coral-scientist Terry Hughes of James Cook University put it. The only way to save corals over the long term is to slow down climate change. That process will require all countries to work together to find the most effective way of cutting emissions (排放) of greenhouse gases. The most recent emissions figures, however, show that the world is failing at that task. The year 2018 has seen an increase in global emissions. This week in Bonn, Germany, countries are meeting to discuss how to keep their word in the Paris climate agreement. Lets hope they hear about the silent death of the worlds corals.27. Why does the author write the text?A. To introduce the Great Barrier Reef.B. To show the result of climate change.C. To offer ways of protecting the Great Barrier Reef. D. To tell us the serious situation of the Great Barrier Reef.28. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?A. Sea-plants help to protect the coral reefs.B. Water temperature has little to do with the coral reefs.C. Climate change is the main reason for coral reefs death.D. Agricultural fertilizer provides nutrients for coral reefs. 29. According to Terry Hughes, the Australian investment in protecting the coral reefs was _.A. timely B. unsatisfying C. effectiveD. useless30. How can we protect the Great Barrier Reef effectively in the long run?A. By reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases.B. By cutting down the number of tourists.C. By setting more strict rules on overfishing.D. By investing more in climate research.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Learning English as a second language can be a challenge, but it can also bring a lot of advantages. 31 The international business community often uses it for communication, even among people who do not speak the same native language. With no related experience, I was unprepared for what might come next. After some difficulty, Daisys baby was born. I heard a gurgling noise. I couldnt believe that baby was breathing and blinking his big brown eyes at me! We called him Samson, and of course I became his mother as much as Daisy was. I prepared to bottle-feed him, but Samson quickly found his natural food source. Thank God! This new mother was going to stay with her baby.Samson has grown up surrounded with loving companions. I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a day when he was nine months old to wean (使断奶) him, but otherwise he goes wherever she does. I think she would be lost without him. His horse stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoy playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.I asked a worker to make a harness (马具) for my three little horses. When I brought it home I taught them one by one how to pull a cart. Samson watched and freely followed Daisy. When he was three, I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.The most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a little famous for his talents. Last winter, I wondered how Samson would feel about dragging a plastic sled behind him with me sitting on it. No problem at all we moved smoothlyacross the snow.People came from all over to see him perform._16
