21Last Tuesday I took my two daughters, a_1_ five and seven, to town by car. It began to rain hard so I decided I would leave the children in the car before I rushed into a shop. Thanks to Max, he was saved from the fire.After what had happened, Joe realized that life was not that bada 6 all! He felt 1 to be alive, and was sure that everything wouldbe all right.23Mr. and Mrs. Smith were having an argument on the boat deck. Mrs. Smith was r_1_ to get into a lifeboat without her husband. Then Mrs. Smith had an idea. She saw Captain Smith standing nearby with a megaphone (扩音器). Each person produces about two kilograms of trash a day. We are making waste products faster than n_1_ can break them down. How can we make less garbage?Garbage isnt just the smelly rotting fruits, vegetables or meat that we throw away in our homes. Theyre only a small part of all the stuffwe throw away. Last year, we did something about that. Now we use more cloth bags and shopping baskets when we shop.In the coming years China will build waste-to-energy plants in cities to clean up the garbage. As the days go by, theyre becoming more and more concerned about their futures, since he hasnt been able to find another job yet, and neither has she.The layoffs werent a s_1_ to Mike and Alice. After all, Mikes company hadnt been doing very well for a long time, and neither had Alices. However, Mike had never expected both of them to be laid off at the same time. Ever since they have been laid off, Mike and Alice have been trying to find new jobs. He cant find anything in the want ads. She hasnt heard about any job openings. We have a big lunch here at Twyburys - soup, r_4_ meat, potatoes, vegetables, and always a pudding. After lunch I like being taken out in my wheelchair, or even in a car, if theres anyone to take mc. I h_5_ staying indoors. I like looking in the shop windows, or sitting in a park and watching the world go by. Sometimes someone will read to me or write some letters. I usually fall a_6_ about three, and then of course we have our tea around five - nothing heavy - cold meat and salad and fruit, and that kind of thing. In the evening we play cards, or do knitting, and then Im in bed by eight. I am getting on a bit, you know. Im n_7_ eighty-three.
