Earlier this month, two rock climbers achieved what many thought impossible:They climbed up the 3,000foothigh Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park without specialized equipment.Climbing without this equipment is called“freeclimbing.”Until now,no one had freeclimbed to the top of the rock face, which is a part of the mountain EI Capitan.El Capitan, which means “the captain” or “the chief” in Spanish, has always presented a challenge to climbers. But the Dawn Wall,on the mountains southeast face,is a particularly difficult route to the summit(顶峰)It is a rock formation that is both steep and relatively smooth. This makes freeclimbing the rock face seem almost impossible.About seven years ago, professional climber Tommy Caldwell spotted a possible route up the wall.It took years of planning and preparation, but this month,Caldwell,36,and his friend Kevin Jorgeson,30,finally make the climb.Free climbers do use ropes and other basic safety equipment to catch them if they falland Caldwell and Jorgeson fell often. Before starting their climb, they broke down their route into 32 sections. Each section was based on a rope length called a “pitch”The rope was secured into the rock face to catch the climbers if they fell.Caldwell and Jorgesons goal was to climb the Dawn Wall without returning to the ground. If they fell, they had to start that pitch all over again. The two men started climbing on December 27.They slept in hanging tents, and a team of friends brought them food each day.The men had spent years rehearsing(排练) the movements it would take to get through each pitch. They made it through the fist half of the climb relatively easily. But halfway up,Jorgeson ran into trouble. In one difficult spot,he fell each time he attempted to climb. After 10 days of trying,Jorgeson finally made it to the next pitch.Getting through that troublesome pitch gave both climbers renewed energy. They finished the rest of the climb five days later,on January 14. 1What does Paragraph 2 mainly explain?AWhy the Dawn Wall is a hard challenge.BWhy people prefer climbing El Capitan.CHow to freeclimb the Dawn Wall.DHow El Capitan got its name. 根据第二段最后两句“It is a rock formation that is both steep and relatively smooth. This makes freeclimbing the rock face seem almost impossible.” 故A正确。2To climb Yosemites Dawn Wall,Caldwell and Jorgeson .Areceived one years trainingBchose the nearest routeCmade thoughtful preparationsDused special equipment答案C解析推理判断题。根据第六段第一句“The men had spent years rehearsing(排练) the movements it would take to get through each pitch.” 3What can we learn about this worlds toughest climb?AIt includes 32 different routes.BIt is also the worlds highest climb.CIt was once pleted by Caldwell 7 years ago.DIt took the two climbers 19 days to get to the top. 根据第五段倒数第二句“The two men started climbing on December 27.”和全文最后一句“They finished the rest of the climb five days later,on January 14.” 4Which of the following words can best describe Jorgeson?AProud but patient.BCautious and friendly.CBrave and determined.DImaginative but halfhearted. .七选五How to Succeed in Science 5 That might sound proud, but the fact is that you must always turn to people who are brighter than yourself. Its like playing any game.Even as a child,I never wanted to play games with anyone who was as bad as I was.If you win,it gives you no pleasure. And in the game of science or life, the highest goal isnt simply to win;its to win at something really difficult. 6 Take risksTo make a huge success,a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble. If you are going to make a huge jump in science, you will very likely be unqualified to succeed by definition. 7 This can be more than personally upsetting.Never do anything that bores you.My experience in science is that someone is always telling you to do things, and then leave you alone.Im not good enough to do well in something I dislike. 8 Its very hard to succeed if you dont want to be with other scientistsyou have to go to key meetings where you spot key facts that would have escaped you.And you have to chat with your petitors, even if you find them objectionable. So my final rule is: 9 AMeet challenges with great courage.BIf you cant stand to be with your real peers, get out of science.CPut another way,its to go somewhere beyond your ability and e out on top.DBe sure you always have someone to save you from a deep mess.EAvoid foolish people.FIn fact,I find it hard to do well in something I like.GBesides, you even have to be prepared to disbelieve your scientific heroes. 所以选G项“Besides,you even have to be prepared to disbelieve your scientific heroes.” G项还与横线后一句“This can be more than personally upsetting.” 所以F项“In fact,I find it hard to do well in something I like.” 这和B项“If you cant stand to be with your real peers, get out of science.” I first got
