However, he cannot take the credit for creating other wellloved characters, such as Cinderella and Snow White. They are almost automatically associated with Disney because Disney turned old fables (寓言) into cartoon movies. The original Cinderella varies very much from the Disney version we know today. It started off with the girl mourning her mothers death and going to her tomb three times a day. In addition, there were only birds that helped Cinderella; there was no such thing as a fairy godmother or helpful mice, nor was there mention of a horse and carriage. The stepsisters were cruel: they always threw Cinderellas food into the ashes of the fire, and made her sleep on the ashes on the floor, hence (因此) her name.In the original story, the kings ball actually lasted for three days. With the help of the birds, the girl, beautifully dressed, danced with the prince on all three nights and the prince fell in love with her. However, she broke away from him to rush back home each night. On the last night, the prince placed something sticky on the stairs; as Cinderella made her escape, a shoe got stuck on it.Here now is where the story becomes unpleasant: when the prince went to the house looking for the girl whose foot fit the shoe, the wicked (邪恶的) stepmother told one of her two daughters to cut off her big toe to fit into the shoe. The daughter did as told. So the prince took her away to be his bride. But, when they passed the tomb of Cinderellas mother, the birds called out to the prince,“Turn and peep, theres blood within the shoe; The shoe is too small, the true bride waits for you.”Realizing he had been tricked, the prince returned the daughter to her mother; the other then had to cut off part of her heel in order to fit into the shoe, with the same result. Only Cinderellas foot fit perfectly and so the prince chose to marry her.The story ends with the wedding day: as Cinderellas two stepsisters followed her, pretending to be devoted to her so that they could enjoy the kings riches, two birds flew by and plucked (啄) out their eyes. Because of their wickedness and falsehood, they had to spend the rest of their days blindly. The original Cinderella is so different from the Disney version. Thank goodness Disney made such changes; it indeed was a wise move. 21. What does the underlined word “They” in the first paragraph refer to?A. Such wonderful things. B. Other wellloved characters.C. Old fables. D. Cartoon movies. However,he cannot take the credit for creating other wellloved characters. 22. How did Cinderella get her name?A. The birds came up with it.B. It was given by Disney.C. It came from the word “ash”D. She got it from her mother. 23. Which of the following is TRUE according to the original story?A. Helpful mice got Cinderella a beautiful dress.B. The ball was held to celebrate the princes wedding.C. Cinderella left her shoe on the stairs on purpose.D. The birds told the prince that he had been cheated. 根据第五段最后一句the birds called out to the prince. Realizing he had been tricked. 24. The moral of the original story is that _. A. a wicked person cannot escape punishment B. a devoted person certainly deserves respect C. a wellbehaved child earns a great reward D. a dishonest child cannot get mother love答案:A推理判断题。 BNo matter how long your life is, you will, at best, be able to read only a few books of all that have been written, and the few you do read should include the best. You can be pleased with the fact that the number of such is relatively small. It is to be expected that the selections will change over time. Yet there is a surprising uniformity(一致性) in the lists which represent the best choices of any period. In every age, the list makers include both ancient and modern books in their selections, and they always wonder whether the moderns are up to the great books of the past. What are the signs by which we may recognize a great book? The four I will mention may not be all there are, but they are the ones Ive found most useful in explaining my choices over the years. Great books are probably the most widely read. They are enduring bestsellers. Gone With the Wind has had relatively few readers compared to the plays of Shakespeare or Don Quixote. It would be reasonable to estimate that Homer has been read by at least 25, 000, 000 people in the last 3, 000 years.Great books are popular, not pedantic. They are not written by specialists about specialties for specialists. Whether they are philosophy or science, or history or poetry, they treat of human, not academic problems. They are written for men, not professors. To read a textbook for advanced students, you have to read an elementary textbook first. But the great books can be considered elementary in the sense that they treat the elements of any subject matter. They are not related to one another as a series of textbooks, graded in difficulty or in the technicality of the problems with which they deal.Great books are always contemporary, the most readable and instructive.Great books deal with the continuously unsolved problems of human life. There are mysteries in the world that mark the limits of human knowing and thinking. Inquiry not begins with wonder, but usually ends with it. Great minds acknowledge mysteries only honestly. Wisdom is encouraged, not destroyed, by understanding its limitations. 25. Which of the following is NOT mentioned when judging a great book?A. A good book probably attracts many people to read.B. A great book can be read without any effort.C. Great books are never out of date.D. Great books will not disappoint you if you read them. 26. According to the author, Gone With the Wind is _.A. a bestsellerB. gradually losing its popularityC. disliked by readers who like ShakespeareD. read more often than Don Quixotes work答案:A细节理解题。 27. In Paragraph 5, the underlined word “pedantic” means “_”A. easy to readB. serving as practical examplesC. showing the feelings which people haveD. paying too much attention to rules and details答案:D词义猜测题。 28. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. Great Books in Your LifeB. Great Books Are PopularC. How to Find Great Books?D. What Are Great Books? CIn this mediafocused world, the things we see and hear in the movies, on TV, and on the radio influence us all. Some are beneficial to the forming minds of youth. But many others provide young people with questionable messages. The stars of these shows do not commit technically immoral(不道德的) acts; they simply commit mindless ones that lead many viewers to conclude that the shows are harmless. We can recognize when behavior lacks common sense, however, the greater danger is that we have been influenced by the media to view mindlessness as acceptable.I am disgusted with TV programs and movies that promote mindless behavior. The stars of these shows demonstrate to young peopleparticularly girlsthat it is attractive to be dumb. That idea feeds into other selfimage issues that girls already experience and I believe this is affecting the future of our nation. If we want to have any hope for our society, we must stop this widespread stupidity.Paris Hilton has admitted that she is not familiar with common knowledge, including the function of the Walmart stores and the capital city of England. Despite these failings, Hilton has been linked romantically to the rich and famousmodels, musicians, actors, and businessmenshowing young women that desirable men find her stupidity attractive. These negative examples lead girls to imitate Hilton in order to gain male attention; this begins youngperhaps as early as grade school. Some people may view the “stupid girl” trend as a simple display of childishness. However, the immaturity of youth is not to blame. Stupid girls are growing up to be stupid women and having children. What will these mothers teach the future leaders of our nation? Will they teach their daughters to always wear makeup and encourage their sons to pursue ignorant girls? If this cycle continues, our country will be run into the ground in a matter of a few generations! 29The author may agree that _.A. the influences of media are completely good to the forming minds of youthB. the stars of these shows commit immoral acts on purposeC. some messages of the shows are misleadingD. the mediafocused world is a dangerous world答案:C推理判断题。 30. According to the passage, under the influence of media, people might _.A. lack all the common senseB. consider stupidity as acceptableC. lose hope for our societyD. commit crimes more often答案:B推理判断题。根据第一段最后一句中的“we have been influenced by the media to view mindlessness as acceptable”可知,应选B,即人们认为这样的愚蠢是可以被接受的。31. Paris Hilton is mentioned to prove that _.A. stars set a good example to the youngB. stars have been linked romantically to the rich and famousC. common knowledge has nothing to do with stupidityD. the negative influence of stars on the young is huge答案:D推理判断题。 32. If this widespread stupidity continued, what would happen in the future?A. More girls would imitate famous stars.B. More girls would become intelligent enough.C. The future leaders would become immature.D. The whole society would be ruined. DReading for pleasure is declining among primaryage pupils, and increasing numbers of “time poor” parents are dropping the practice of sharing bedtime stories with their children once they start school.Research presented to a conference last week found that, while parents read to preschoolers, this later tails off, and by the final year of primary school only around 2% read to their children every day. Once children can read skillfully, parents tend to step back, and this usually happens at the age of seven or eight. The report also found that 82% of teachers blame the governments “targetdriven” education policies for the fact that fewer children are reading for pleasure. They believe that a straitjacket(束缚) of strictly organized schooling is containing young peoples ability to read more widely. Twothirds of teachers surveyed said they lacked time in the school day to introduce a variety of books and that this was a “major obstacle to being able to develop a level of reading”. Teachers also cited as main factors the reduction in the number of school librarians, who could put interesting books before children, and the rise in “screen time”, switching children from reading to playing games. The majority of teachers said the curriculums(课程) “emphasis on reading as a skill to be mastered” was increasing the pressure. This was compounded by parents who saw reading just as a focus of learning, a skill critical to career advancement in a competitive world.Reading habits and the digital revolution in publishing were key topics of debate at the conference. The theme of the lack of British culture was supported by childrens writer Frank Cottrell Boyce, who wrote the scripts(手稿) for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics. “We discovered the whole nation had forgotten that they did the industrial revolution,” he said. “Books are so central to it; books can be written by anyone. A lot of the pleasure of a book is listening to somebody read it to you.”“We found a real love of reading among teachers, and a strong desire to encourage more children to read for pleasure,” said Rob Cheney. “However, the teachers also had an overpowering sense of frustration with their situation.”“Touchscreen phones and tablets(平板电脑) are naturally attractive to children,” the survey said, and predicted a period of awkwardness as everyone else adapts. By 2018, childrens television will have adopted the presence of this second screen, and it “will be strange not to have children at home drawing along on tablets and then having these appearing live in the show”The hope is that userfriendly screens could, if material is adapted and downloaded easily, present an opportunity for more ambitious publishingfor example, books children can either read or choose to have read to them; or digital books with moving pictures instead of photos to clarify factual and scientific points. Parental controls that are easy to use would be key, the conference was told, such as “a warning for when devices use the WiFi, especially after bedtime”, to allow parents to shut off access to children in the home. 33. What leads to parents dropping the practice of sharing bedtime stories with their children?A. Children have less time to spend with their parents after they start school.B. Parents think it unnecessary
