A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age. Martin Doherty, a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment, Doherty and his team tested the perception(观察力) of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10, and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25. The first group of pictures showed two circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one. Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time. Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time. Next, both groups were shown a picture where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by gray circles. Heres where the trick lies in. In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circlesso it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle. When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they werent fooledthey were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy(准确性) as before. Older children and adults, on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one, and adults got it wrong most of the time. As children get older, Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once: the tricky gray circles, as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, theyre more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick.21Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate_.A. childrens and adults eye-sightB. peoples ability to see accuratelyC. childrens and adults brainsD. the influence of peoples age22When asked to find the larger circle,_.A. children at 6 got it wrong 79 % of the time with no gray ones aroundB. only adults over 18 got it right 95% of the time with gray ones aroundC. children at 4 got it right about 79 % of the time with gray ones aroundD. adults got it right most of the time with gray ones around23According to the passage, we can know that_.A. a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white backgroundB. an orange circle appears bigger than a gray one of the same sizeC. a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real sizeD. a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size24Why are younger children not fooled?_.A. Because their brain can hardly notice related things together.B. Because older people are influenced by their experience.C. Because peoples eyes become weaker as they grow older.D. Because they are smarter than older children and adults. It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to workOn arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually doesAfter putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike goneThe bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transportTrevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young familyAnd the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货), saving us from having to walk long distances from where we liveI was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our storyShortly after that, several people in our area offered to helpOne wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it upOnce again my husband had a way to get to and from his jobIt really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met beforePeople say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more soThis experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a wholeAnd it has influenced(影响)us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with othersNo matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone caresAnd the results can be everlasting25Why was the bike so important to the couple?AThe mans job was bike racingBIt was their only possessionCIt was a nice Kona 18 speedDThey used it for work and daily life26We can infer from the text that _Athe couple worked 60 hours a weekBpeople were busy before ChristmasCthe stranger brought over the bikeDlife was hard for the young family27How did people get to know the couples problem?AFrom radio broadcastsBFrom a newspaperCFrom TV newsDFrom a strangerYour school asked parents about the social development in children in the last Parents Meeting. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services. The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated (低估) the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing(长出叶子) by 4 times.“Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance for both leafing and flowering that results from temperature increases,” the study said. The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said.Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis (光合作用) to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet.Scientists believe the worlds average temperature has risen by about 0.8 since 1900, and nearly 0.2 every ten years since 1979.So far, efforts to cut emissions (排放) of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond(超出) 2 this century a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels.32What is the key information the author wants to give in Paragraph 1?A. Plants reaction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystems.B. The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists expectation.C. Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns.D. Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather.33We can learn from the study published on the Nature website that _.A. plants flowering is 8.5 times faster than leafingB. there are 1,634 plant species on the four continentsC. scientists should improve the design of the experimentsD. the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change34Scientists pay special attention to the study of plants because _.A. they can prove the climate change clearlyB. they are very important in the food chainsAC. they play a leading role in reducing global warmingD. they are growing and flowering much faster than before35 What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs about the worlds temperature?A. It has risen nearly 0.2 since 1979.B. Its change will lead to weather extremes.C. It is 0.8 higher in 1979 than that of 1900.D. It needs to be controlled within 2 in this century.七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Effective time management is the primary means to a less stressful life. The researchers said that because air conditioning and heating give us constant, 64_ (comfort) temperatures, our bodys need for brown fat has decreased. This group later gained 30% less weight after both groups were fed high-fat diets. The researchers say this could be good news in the fight against obesity. People who are obese have 69 (low) levels of brown fat than thinner people.
