It is an important part of our lives. Scientists are finding that learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can do us good in many ways. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada found out that children who studied music had the biggest test grade improvements. The secret may be in the way reading music and playing notes on an instrument uses some parts of the brain, which improves our ability to learn school subjects. Music is also used for improving memory. An old song can help you remember something that happened years ago. For people with Alzheimers, listening to music can help them remember their lost memories. Studies of the music often center on classical music, since it makes both the left and right sides of our brains more active. One study found that activity was highest during the short breaks between the movements of a piece of music. During each break, the persons brain tried to work out what would come next, while organizing what he or she had just heard. Its amazing how attuned our brains are to music. Some scientists even think were born with the ability to learn music, just as we all have the skills to learn language. After all, children without any training often make up songs while they play. Just leave them on the table. ” Later, I found that leaving your chopsticks in your rice means death in Japanese culture! Another mistake. At the end of the meal, some little bowls of tea with lemon were given to everyone at the table. It was hot, and I started drinking it before it got cold. She had been famous for having a voice one hears once in a hundred years. But when Marian wanted to sing at Constitution Hall that year, she was refused because she was African American. That wasnt the first time Marian had been turned away because she was black. When she was 18 years old, she wanted to go to music school, she ended up being sent home because of her race. Because of segregation - the practice of keeping blacks and whites separate-the early 1900s were a difficult time for a young black woman to become a singer. But Marian never gave up. It was something that just had to be done, she remembered. I dont think I had much to say in choosing it. I think music chose me. In 1925, Marian won a voice contest in New York, and sang with the New York Philharmonic. And Marian traveled to Europe in 1928, where she became very successful. By 1939, Marian was a world-class singer. She returned to the United States. But back at home, segregation was still there on trains and in hotels and restaurants. Even concert halls were segregated. Marian believed that music would be the only thing that the Constitution Hall would think about. But they told her that only white performers could perform in Constitution Hall. When the news got out, many people were angry. Some of those people gave a special concert for Marian at the Lincoln Memorial. Seventy-five thousand people were there. After 1939, she did the right thing by turning down concerts for segregated listeners. As Marian kept singing, America was changing. She performed in many famous places.
