一 It was a lazy morning during the Christmas week. We were enjoying breakfast when the doorbell rang. It was a little girl, standing at the doorway with a piece of paper and a face that carried an expression of want, rather a common _1_ during Christmas. She murmured that the paper was her booklist and that she was going around _2_ money to buy her schoolbooks. My children went inside and brought some _3_ for her, This kind of incident happens very often in my hometown, _4_ during Christmas. From where I was seated I could see her clearly. She looked about ten years old and she wore a dress too big for her. She spoke in a _5_voice and looked at me straight in the eye. Something made me get up and _6_ her. In answer to my questions, she said that her mother made hoppers and she _7_them before going to school. But the hopper money was not adequate to _8_the list; therefore, she was going from house to house asking for help. Her voice told me the story; her eyes told me that it was _9_. I said Id buy her what was in the list. We drove to a nearby bookstore. She sat _10_, with a strange look on her face. When the clerk was taking all the things on the list, the little girl kept staring as if confused. Perhaps she had never _11_so many new things before. They were merely exercise books, pencils, pens and such things. She whispered her _12_to us. Strange, I hadnt been aware that giving such _13_ things to one in need, could bring me such a lot of happiness. As we drove back I could see the little girl in the mirror. All the gifts I had given in my life never _14_ a face so much. She was grasping the parcel, smiling to herself. The total event made us all very _15_. Our Christmas became more meaningful.1. It will be the _1_ day for me to act upon my kindness idea. I was the lucky _2_ of the December Kindness Ideas Contest on Helpothers.org-where they give you $100 to _3_ your kindness idea. My idea was to purchase some _4_for shelter on a rainy day and some small towels to wipe someones face and _5_ bring a little smile into someones day and hand them out to folks caught out (陷入困境的) in the weather unprepared. I still remember how _6_ I was when I received the $100. I ran right out and bought umbrellas and towels. I washed the towels, put them around the umbrellas and branded them with a smile card. I placed them in plastic bags to _7_ them from wet and dirt! Then I waited for the rain! Lately we had plenty of snow but no rain. Yesterday rain was _8_ steadily! But where were the umbrellas? At my _9_. Where was I? At home, over 20 miles from the office. I dont remember ever wishing for rain before! But at this moment I am-Im eager to start my _10_activity! Yesterday it rained all day long. Today the forecast is for a mix of rain. What do we have now? Cloudy skies. But not one drop of rain. No one _11_ shelter today! I recently left four umbrellas with the receptionist (传递员) so that she could hand them out readily to customs in need. I loved letting her _12_ the fun. The skies hold the _13_ of showers; so I stick several in my bag just in case I should find someone in need, but no luck. Oh how I want someone to be _14_. But I am ready! Before I could even offer to help, the young cashier gave her a big smile. She said,Oh,dont _3_it, and sent the woman on her way. As I came up she said, Its only a few cents. I cant make a big deal out of it. I _4_, Heres the seventeen cents. You did a _5_ nice thing. In this way your cash wont be _6_. The second _7_ came when I was walking along with my young son in a big and busy mall. We passed a young man whose arms and face were covered in tattoos (纹身)。 He wore _8_ clothes and sat on the sidewalk with a sign that said Homeless - Hungry -Sick. Now as we passed I was _9_, Drugger. It was an automatic reaction. But, as we went a little further, I said to myself, Who am I to judge? I should just put something in his paper _10_. I _12_ the young man give my son a big smile and say, Thank you ! My son told him, No problem. When my son came back to me he said, That was good. Now he can get _13_. And they are the ones that _2_ us the most. I just arrived at the grocery store the other day. My shopping list was _3_ but my cash was short. As I walked in the store I _4_ a big, blue barrel(桶)。 On the side was a plea(请求) for _5_ donations for the local charity to help the needy. I glanced inside it . It was completely empty. _6_, I wasnt the only one struggling to make ends meet that week. As I walked through the store, though, I couldnt get that barrel out of my _7_. With each food item I put in my cart. I thought of all the people who couldnt even _8_ to feed their own children right now. Finally, I picked up some extra boxes of _9_ and put them in my cart. I prayed they would fill at least a few empty bellies that week. I knew if I had to I could _10_ something of my own to make a difference. I paid for the groceries and had just enough to get them all. I smiled and walked to the barrel with a(n) _11_ wallet, but a full heart. As I dropped the boxes of noodles in the barrel, I noticed too that it was slowly starting to fill up. I wasnt the only one who had _12_ to help the hungry that day. You might not ever talk about anything serious with them but they are there. A classmate from twenty years ago was one of my Facebook friends.
