On this important feast day, people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakeswith bones on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to thedead. China and Japan have mid-autumn festivals, when people admire the moon and in China, enjoy mooncakes.Spring FestivalsThe most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter andto the ing of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat andmay give children lucky money in red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and familiescelebrate the Lunar New Year together. Some Western countries have very e*citing carnivals, whichtake place forty days before Easter, usually in February. But not today! Why was that What couldhave happened He thought of his mutton, beef and bacon cooked in the hottest, finest oil.His cola was sugary and cold, and his ice cream was made of milk, cream and deliciousfruit. Nothing could be better, he thought. Suddenly he saw his friend Li Chang hurryingby. Hello,Lao Li,he calledYour usual.,But Li Chang seemed not to hear. What wasthe matter Something terrible must have happened if Li Chang was not ing to eat inhis restaurant as he always did. Wang Peng followed Li Chang into a new small restaurant. He saw a sign in the window. Tired of all that fat Want to lose weight e inside, Yong Huis slimming restaurant. Only slimming foods served here. Make yourself thin again! Curiosity drove Wang Peng inside. It was full ofpeopleThe hostess,a very thin lady, came forwardWele, she said. My name is Yong Hui. Ill helpyou lose weight and be fit in two weeks if you eat hereevery day. Then she gave a menu to Wang Peng. Therewere few choices of food and drink on it: just rice, rawvegetables served in vinegar, fruit and water. Wang Peng was amazed at this and especially atthe pricesIt cost more than a good meal in his restaurant! He could not believe his eyesHethrew down the menu and hurried outsideOn his wayhome he thought about his own menuDid it makepeople fat Perhaps he should go to the library and findout. He could not have Yong Hui getting away withtelling people lies!He had better do some research! At the library Wang Peng was surprised to find thathis restaurant served far too much fat and Yong Huisfar too little. Even though her customers might get thinafter eating Yong Huis food, they were not eatingenough energy-giving food to keep them fit. They wouldbee tired very quickly. Wang Peng felt more hopeful as he drove back home. Perhapswith a discount and a new sign he could win his customers back. So he wrote: Want to feelfit and energetic e and eat here! Discounts today! Our food gives you energy all day! The petition between the two restaurants was on!Reading and discussing e And Eat Here(2)E AND EAT HERE2A week later, Wang Pengs restaurant was nearly full and he felt happier. Perhaps he would beable to earn his living after all and not have to close his restaurant. He did not look forward tobeing in debt because his restaurant was no longer popular. He smiled as he weled somecustomers warmly at the door but the smile left his face when he saw Yong Hui walking in. Shedid not look happy but glared at him. May I ask what you were doing in my restaurant the otherday.I thought you were a new customer and now I know that you only came to spy on me andmy menu, she shouted. Please e*cuse me, he calmly e*plained, I wanted to know where allmy customers had gone last week. I followed one of them and found them in your restaurant. Idont want to upset you, but I found your menu so limited that I stopped worrying and startedadvertising the benefits of my food. Why dont you sit down and try a meal., Yong Hui agreed to stay and soon they were both enjoying dumplings and breast of chicken cooked with garlic. When they were served the ice cream, Yong Hui began to look ill. I feel sickwith all this fat and heavy food, she said, I miss my vegetables and fruit.Wang Peng wasenjoying a second plate of dumplings so he sighedYes, he added, and I would miss mydumplings and fatty pork. Dont you get tired quickly Well, I do have to rest a lot, admittedYong Hui. But dont you think it would be better if you were a bit thinner Im sure youd feelmuch healthier. They began to talk about menus and balanced dietsAccording to my research, neither yourrestaurant nor mine offers a balanced diet, e*plained Wang Peng.I dont offer enough fibre and you dont offer enough body-building and energy-giving food. Perhaps we ought to bineour ideas and provide a balanced menu with food full of energyand fibre. So that is what they did. They served raw vegetableswith the hamburgers and boiled the potatoes rather than fryingthem. They served fresh fruit with the ice cream. In this waythey cut down the fat and increased the fibre in the meal. Theirbalanced diets became such a success that before long WangPeng became slimmer and Yong Hui put on more weight. Aftersome time the two found that their business cooperation hadturned into a personal oneFinally they got married and livedhappily ever after.Reading Task For Building A McdonaldsFOR BUILDING A MCDONALDSI was e*cited when I heard that our munity was to have its own McDonalds restaurant. Ithought about all those young people who would not have to go to the ne*t town to buy theirfavourite burgers and chips. McDonalds cares about healthy eating too and works with scientiststo provide food that is of high quality, safe and healthy. It is also cheapThey often providesalads as well as burgers and chips. You can also choose between cola and milk shakes奶昔Of course it also means more work for our area that needs jobs badly. McDonalds says theyare interested in doing what is right for the munity and being a good neighbour. So I thinkthey will be concerned about providing parking for the cars in our main street. Many of ouryoung people will be only too happy to work for the pany. McDonalds makes a promise tothe people who work for them. They say, We value you, your growing skills and your help to thepany. I can see nothing but good if this pany es to build its restaurant in our town.AGAINST BUILDING A MCDONALDSI am very worried about McDonalds building a restaurant in our hometown. We are a smallmunity and we enjoy our local dishesI am not sure if McDonalds food is as healthy asthey say in their advertisementsWhen scientists look at it carefully, they find high levels offat, sugar and salt. This is very worryingToo many young people are getting fat througheating too much fatty foodMcDonalds is not giving young people a good idea of what ahealthy diet should be. Local Chinese food, on the other hand, is full of fresh vegetables andfresh meat and fish. The food at a McDonalds restaurant is always the same, so I wonder if itis made or brought in from elsewhereAlthough it is freshly cooked, it must be less healthythan our own locally grown and cooked Chinese food. I also worry about all those cars bringing people to buy food at McDonaldsFirst, therewill be petrol fumes气体,which will make our clean air dirty. Second, there is the problemof all those cars that try to park and prevent other cars from moving quickly through our town. I am sure many young people will be happy to work for McDonalds but will they betreated fairly. In America, McDonalds does not allow workersunions to operate in itsrestaurants and these are people who speak up for the workers. If, as they say, the workers arehappy with them, why should they fear some workers joining a union So when I consider the food, the cars and the jobs, I think we should not allow McDonaldsto build their restaurant in our town.Book 3 Unit 3 The Million Pound Bank NoteReading The Million Pound Bank Note THE MILLION POUND BANK NOTEAct I, Scene 3NARRATOR: It is the summer of 1903.
