It is one hundred feet taller than Big Ben and weighs 1600 tons. It was built to celebrate the year xx. Maybe building such a big spinning structure suggested that people longed for bigger and better things in the future. Why did people think of building the London Eye? In fact it was inspired by great structures of the past like the very first observation wheel built for the Chicago World Expo of 1893. Its twice the size of the wheel, but three times lighter, and much more fortable. The London Eye is keeping natives and visitors entertained and awed(敬畏). In the London Eye, there are 32 capsules. Each of the capsules can hold up to 25 people. And theyre air conditioned in summer, heated in winter. From these capsules the visitors can see the most beautiful views of London. It was difficult to assemble(安装) and put a wheel of this size. And it required new technology and a lot of imagination. The parts of the London Eye were sent up the Thames River and the wheel was assembled on temporary platforms on the river. Lifting it into an upright position was a major challenge. It took a week to winch(吊) it up to its final position. Now the London Eye is regarded as a monument to new millennium. And many visitors from all over the world e to visit it.21. How tall is Big Ben?A. 340-350 feet. B. 443 feet C. 550 feet. D. 250-260 feet22. Why did London build the London Eye?A. To set a new record.B. To celebrate the Queens birthday.C. To celebrate the ing of xx.D. To beat the first observation wheel in Chicago.23. From the text, we can learn that_.A. the London Eye has been changed into a monumentB. it took great trouble for people to build the London EyeC. the latest technology was used to assemble the London EyeD. imagination is not very important to build the London EyeA few weeks ago, I called an Uber to take me to the Boston airport for a flight home for the holidays. As I slid into the back seat of the car, the warm intonations(语调) of the drivers accent washed over me in a familiar way.I learned that he was a recent West African immigrant with a few young children, working hard to provide for his family. I could relate: I am the daughter of two Ethiopian immigrants who made their share of sacrifices to ensure my success. I told him I was on a college break and headed home to visit my parents. Thats how he found out I go to Harvard. An approving eye glinted at me in the rearview window(后视镜), and quickly, we crossed the boundaries of rider and driver. I became his daughter, all grown up the product of his sacrifice. And then came the fateful question: “What do you study?” I answered “history and literature” and the pride in his voice faded, as I knew it might. I didnt even get to add “and African-American studies” before he cut in, his voice thick with disappointment, “All that work to get into Harvard, and you study history?”Here I was, his daughter, squandering the biggest opportunity of her life. He went on to deliver the age-old lecture that all immigrant kids know. We are to bee doctors (or lawyers, if our parents are being generous) to make money and send money back home. The unspoken demand, made across generations, which my Uber driver laid out plainly, is simple: Fulfill your role in the narrative(故事) of upward mobility so your children can do the same.I used to feel anxious and backed into a corner by the questioning, but now as a junior in college, Im grateful for their support more than anything. This holiday season, Ive promised myself I wont huff (发怒)and get annoyed at their inquiries. I wont defensively respond with “but I plan to go to law school!” when I get unrequested advice. Ill just smile and nod, and enjoy the warmth of the occasion.24. What disappointed the driver?A. The authors attitude towards him.B. The school that the author is attending.C. The authors majors in history and literature.D. The authors interests in African American studies.25. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “squandering” in Paragraph 4?A. wastingB. creating C. valuing D. seizing26. Why are immigrant kids expected to be doctors or lawyers?A. Their parents want them to move upward in society.B. Their parents are high achieving as well.C. They have more opportunities.D. They are very smart in general. 27. How did the author react to the drivers questioning?A. Getting upset. B. Feeling satisfied.C. Defending herself.D. Appreciating his concern. CAre you able to tell if people are lying? There is a piece of good news that a technology pany is developing a lie detector app for smart phones that could be used by parents, teachers and Internet daters. The app measures blood flow in the face to assess whether or not you are telling the truth. Its developers say that it could be used for Internet daters wanting to see if somebody really is interested in them. Parents could use it on their children to see if they are lying, and teachers could work out which pupils are truthful. The app is being developed by Toronto startup NuraLogix and the app is called Transdermal Optical Imaging. The idea is that different human feelings create different facial blood flow patterns that we have no control over. These patterns change if we are telling the truth or telling a lie, using footage(一组镜头) from the smart phone camera, the app will see the changes in skin colour and pare them to standardized results.A study finds that anger is connected with more facial blood flow and redness while sadness is connected with less of both.Kang Lee, who has been researching the field for 20 years, said that the lie detector test will let you find out the truth remotely and secretly. He said: “It could be very useful, for example, for teachers. A lot of our students have math anxiety, but they do not want to tell us because thats embarrassing.”Lee added that the technology would not replace lie detectors used in a court of law. He said: They want the accuracy to be extremely high, like genetic tests-a one-in-a-million error rate. Our technique wont be able to achieve an extremely high accuracy level, so because of that, I dont think its useful for the courts. He added that it will be a few years before the dating app is available to consumers.28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?A. The operation process of the app. B. The history of a technology pany.C. The origin and development of the new technology. D. The functions and applications of the app. 29. What do we know about the app?A. Its accuracy is the same as genetic tests. B. It has been already on the market for a few years.C. It will help see the structures of human skin. D. It can help teachers pick out the honest pupils.30. What can we learn from the text?A. The technology will be applied to the medical field.B. Sadness is related to less facial blood flow and redness when pared with anger. C. Different human feelings have nothing to do with facial blood flow patterns.D. The technology will replace lie detectors in the court of law,31. What is the best title for the text?A. The Story about Kang Lee B. The Disadvantages of New TechnologyC. A Developing App for Smart Phones D. Various Smart Phones DYouth football team members rescued more than two weeks after sudden flooding trapped them in a cave in Thailand are now being well looked after at a hospital in the northern city of Chiang Rai. In addition to treating the boys for potential body fluid loss, inadequate nutrition and lack of oxygen, their doctors also plan to closely monitor them for symptoms of diseases that may have been infected by animals living in the cave.“The next step is to make sure those kids and their families are safe, because living in a cave provides a different environment, which might contain animals that could transmitdisease,” said the local hospital. The boys and their family members have been told to watch for symptoms such as headache, nausea(反胃), muscle pain or difficulty breathing, the reports added.Yet based on the location where the boys were trappedmore than four kilometers from the cave plexs main entrance, past some fully submerged passagesand the fact they have been swimming out wearing full scuba face masks, it seems unlikely that they were living with bats in the cave or breathed in bat-associated bacteria during their rescue, several infectious disease experts said. “Its hard to imagine bats got that deep into the cave because of all those narrow passageways, but it is possible,” says Ian Lipkin, an animal expert and professor at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. “Its unlikely that there would be many animals in there,” notes Jonathan Epstein, a doctor at EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit organization that studies diseases and how to prevent them. Bats typically like to rest in areas they can easily enter and exit, not in places that fully flood, he adds.Bats in Thailand have been linked with a wide range of viruses that are similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)Lipkin says. But it seems more likely the boys would have been exposed to infection-causing bacteria when they swam through the dirty water with cuts and scrapes. “If you are trying to prioritize issues with respect to health care for these kids, number one would be psychological damage and second will be bacterial infections from the cuts and scrapes they may have encountered.” Lipkin says.32. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the potential symptom of the rescued team members?A. Lacking body water. B. Adequate oxygen.C. Unbalanced nutrition. D. Pain in the head and muscles.33. The underlined word “submerged” in paragraph 3 means _.A. under the water B. wild and dangerousC. with animals D. bat-associated 34. Which is true about the caves and the trapped people?A. Jonathan Epstein thought it possible for the team members to be attacked by bats in the fully-flooded cave.B. Lipkin argued bats were not able to get deep into the narrow cave where the kids were trapped.C. Lipkin said the victims might be infected when their body were exposed to bacterial water during the rescue.D. Lipkin believed the most important issue for the cave-trapped teenagers was infectious bacteria examination.35. What is the text type of the passage?A. An academic essay about bats. B.
