It is about the deep love between a young girl and her pet lamb. The poem is from a true story that happened in the early part of the 19th century in the town of Sterling, Massachusetts, in the USA. Mary Sawyer (1806-1889) lived on a farm with her family. One day, when she was about nine years old, she saw a little lamb that had just been born and left behind by its mother. It was very weak and looked as if it would die that very moment. Mary took pity on the lamb and spent the whole night looking after it. Eventually, it grew strong and became a very close friend with Mary, following her everywhere she went. One day, the lamb even followed Mary to school. At first she wanted to turn it back but her brother suggested that it would be fun to take the lamb to school. During the class, she hid the lamb under her desk. But when she was called to go to the front of the class, to her shock, the lamb followed her. Though the students and the teacher thought it was funny to see a lamb at school, the teacher had to ask Mary to keep the lamb outside of the school. That very day, a young man called John Roulstone was visiting Marys school. He was so moved by the love between the child and her little pet lamb that he wrote a poem which he handed to Mary the next day. His poem contained twelve lines.Mary had a little lamb,Its fleece was as white as snow,And everywhere that Mary went,The lamb was sure to go.It followed her to school one day; That was against the rule.It made the children laugh and playTo see the lamb at school. And so the teacher turned it out,but still it lingered nearAnd waited patiently aboutTill Mary did appear.Later, Sara Josepha Hale added another twelve lines to the poem and published it in 1930 under the title “Mary Had a Little Lamb”. The poem has bee a classic, loved by children all over the world. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadnt invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in. “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck? Its a beautiful day.” “No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning. My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it. “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital”. When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my fathers injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, theres no telling what might have happened. A broken rib(肋骨)might have pierced(穿透)a lung.” My mother may have said more, but I didnt hear. I didnt hear anything except those terrible words: Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled those words at him earlier in the day? It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him. “Daddy I am so sorry” “Its okay, sweetheart. Ill be okay. ” “No,” I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day. You know, that morning?” My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly. He looked at me and said. “Sweetheart, I dont remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. But I remember kissing you goodnight the night before. ”He managed a weak smile. My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. And we all have the power to choose our words. I intend to do that very carefully from now on.28.The author was in bad mood that morning because _.A.his father had a terrible accidentB.he couldnt drive to the mall with his friends.C.his friends hadnt invited him to the cinemaD.his father didnt allow him to go out with his friends29.Why did the author say sorry to his father in the hospital?A.Because he didnt go along with his father.B.Because he was rude to his father that morning.C.Because he failed to e earlier after the accident.D.Because he couldnt look after his father in the hospital.30.The reason why the authors father said he forgot everything about that day is that _.A. he had a poor memoryB. he didnt hear what his son saidC. he just wanted to fort his sonD. he lost his memory after the accident31.What lesson did Beck learn from the matter?A. Dont treat your parents badly.B. Dont hurt others with rude words.C. Dont move the injured in an accident.D. Dont be angry with friends at small things.DThe idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play has an important part in keeping you healthy. Use “the best medicine” to treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger. Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as its for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive(认知的) falling.Anyway, adding humor, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, interesting and happier.32.What does the underlined word infectious in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Playing an important role. B.Keeping people in high spirits.C.Quickly influencing other people. D.Preventing illness from spreading.33.What can laughter increase according to the author?A.Cognitive ability.
