than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑)Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度)But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes“mindlessly”by taking down word for word what the professors said.In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual notetaking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts. The researchers report said,“While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.”In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.5More and more students favor laptops for notetaking because they can_.Awrite more notesBdigest concepts betterCget higher scoresDunderstand lectures better6While taking notes, laptop users tend to be_.Askillful BmindlessCthoughtful Dtireless7The author of the passage aims to_.Aexamine the importance of longterm memoryBstress the benefit of taking notes by handCexplain the process of taking notesDpromote the use of laptops8The passage is likely to appear in_.Aa newspaper advertisementBa puter textbookCa science magazineDa finance report答案:【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。 故选A。 根据第二段第二句“But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught”可知,研究已经发现笔记本电脑的使用者没能记住和应用教给他们的概念。 C。CWorking with a group of baboons (狒狒) in the Namibian desert,Dr.Alecia Carter of the Department of Zoology,Cambridge University set baboons learning tasks involving a novel food and a familiar food, hidden in a box. Some baboons were given the chance to watch another baboon who already knew how to solve the task, while others had to learn for themselves. To work out how brave or anxious the baboons were,Dr.Carter presented them either with a novel food or a threat in the form of a model of a poisonous snake. She found that personality had a major impact on learning. The braver baboons learnt, but the shy ones did not learn the task although they watched the baboon perform the task of finding the novel food just as long as the brave ones did.In effect, despite being made aware of what to do,they were still too shy to do what the experienced baboon did.The same held true for anxious baboons pared with calm ones. The anxious individuals learnt the task by observing others while those who were relaxed did not, even though they spent more time watching. This mismatch between collecting social information and using it shows that personality plays a key role in social learning in animals, something that has previously been ignored in studies on how animals learn to do things. The findings are significant because they suggest that animals may perform poorly in cognitive (认知的) tasks not because they arent clever enough to solve them, but because they are too shy or nervous to use the social information. The findings may impact how we understand the formation of culture in societies through social learning. If some individuals are unable to get information from others because they dont associate with the knowledgeable individuals,or they are too shy to use the information once they have it,information may not travel between all group members, preventing the formation of a culture based on social learning.9What is the first paragraph mainly about?AThe design of Dr.Carters research.BThe results of Dr.Carters research.CThe purpose of Dr.Carters research.DThe significance of Dr.Carters research.10According to the research, which baboons are more likely to plete a new learning task?AThose that have more experience.BThose that can avoid potential risks.CThose that like to work independently.DThose that feel anxious about learning.11Which best illustrates the “mismatch” mentioned in Paragraph 4?ASome baboons are intelligent but slow in learning.BSome baboons are shy but active in social activities.CSome baboons observe others but dont follow them.DSome baboons perform new tasks but dont concentrate.12Dr.Carters findings indicate that our culture might be formed through _.Astoring informationBlearning from each otherCunderstanding different peopleDtravelling between social groups答案:【语篇解读】本文是一篇科普说明文。 The braver baboons learnt, but the shy ones did not learn. The anxious individuals learnt.while those who were relaxed did not. The findings may impact how we understand the formation of culture in societies through social learning. DClose your eyes for a minute and imagine what life would be like if pletely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better. The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London,Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire(尖顶)He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building arent regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name:the Shard.Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts(桅杆) of the ships that were once on the river Thames. The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a fivestar hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices. Before building work began,a lot of people didnt want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.Other critics dont like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is being more unequal.Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor. The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.18Londons newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of _.Aits cost Bits sizeCits shape Dits height19When he designed the Shard,Piano wanted it to _.Achange Londons skylineBinherit Londons traditionCimitate the Egyptian styleDattract potential visitors20The critics who refer to social division think the Shard _.Ais only preferred by the richBis intended for wealthy peopleCis far away from the poor areaDis popular only with Londoners21Which would be the best title for the passage?AThe Shard:Cheers and ClapsBThe Shard:Work of a Great ArchitectCThe Shard:New Symbol of London?DThe Shard:A Change for the Better? 由第二段中的“It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name:the Shard.” Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition.(Piano说“碎片大厦”的尖顶外形是伦敦伟大传统的一部分。) 由第五段中的“Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel.” 由第一段的最后一句“However,not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better.” FSamuel Osmond is a 19yearold law student from Cornwall,England. He never studied the piano. However,he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them.He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago,he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata (奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesnt even realize that what he can do is special.Samuel wanted to bee a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now,he studies law and music.Samuel cant understand why everyone is so surprised.“I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar.About two years ago,I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It es easily to meI hear the notes and can bear them in mindeach and every note,”says Samuel.Recently,Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists cant play it.Samuel says confidently,“Its all about super memoryI guess I have that gift.”However,Samuels ability to remember things doesnt stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy,Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesnt know what he wants to do in the future. For now,he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.22What is special about Samuel Osmond?AHe has a gift for writing music.BHe can write down the note he hears.CHe is a top student at the law school.DHe can play the musical piece he hears.23What can we learn from Paragraph 2?ASamuel chose law against the wish of his parents.BSamuel planned to be a lawyer rather than a musician.CSamuel thinks of himself as a man of great musical ability.DSamuel studies law and music on the advice of his teachers.24Everyone around Samuel was surprised because he_.Areceived a good early education in musicBplayed the guitar and the piano perfectlyCcould play the piano without reading musicDcould play the guitar better than his father25What can we infer about Samuel in Paragraph 4?AHe became famous during a special event at his college.BHe is proud of his ability to remember things accurately.CHe plays the piano better than many professional pianists.DHe impressed the audience by playing all the musical pieces.26Which of the following is the best title of this passage?AThe Qualities of a MusicianBThe Story of a Musical TalentCThe Importance of Early EducationDThe Relationship between Memory and Music答案:【语篇解读】本篇为写人的记叙文。 Samuel after he hears them. Samuel wanted to bee a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents.可以知道,他想成为一名律师(也是他父母的愿望),而不是一名音乐家,故选B项,可排除A项;由.but music teachers told him he should study music instead.可以知道,音乐老师想让他放弃法律专业,学习音乐,因此排除D项;由.but Samuel doesnt even realize that what he can do is
