Humans have been keeping animals as pets for tens of thousands of years, but Dr JeanLoup Rault, an animal scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia, believes new panions are ing: robot pets.“Technology is moving very fast,” Rault told ABC News, “The Tamagotchi in the early 1990s was really the first robotic pet, and now Sony and other big panies have improved them a lot.”This may not sit_well_with pet lovers. After all, who would choose a plastic toy over a lovely puppy? But Rault argues that the robotic kind has a lot going for it:“You dont have to feed it, you dont have to walk it, it wont make a mess in your house, and you can go on a holiday without feeling guilty.” The technology also benefits those who are allergic to pets, short on space, or fearful of real animals. Its not clear whether robot pets can replace real ones. But studies do suggest that we can bond with these smart machines. People give their cars names and kids give their toy animals life stories. Its the same with robots. When Sony stopped its repair service for its robot dog Aibo in March xx, owners in Japan held funerals. As an animal welfare researcher, Rault is concerned about how robotic pets could affect our attitudes towards live animals. “If we bee used to a robotic panion that doesnt need food, water or exercises, perhaps it will change how humans care about other living beings,” he said.So are dogs and cats a thing of the past, as Rault predicts? For those who grew up with living and breathing pets, the mechanical kind might not do. But for our next generation who are in constant touch with smart technology, a future in which lovely pets neednt have a heartbeat might not be a farfetched dream. 1What does the underlined phrase “sit well with” mean?ABe refused by. People and animals have been doing what they always do to prepare for the colder months. Squirrels, for example, have been busy gathering nuts from trees. _1_They examined differences between red squirrels and gray squirrels in the American state of Indiana. The scientists wanted to know how these differences could affect the growth of black walnut (黑胡桃) trees. _2_ The black walnut tree is also a central part of some hardwood forests.Rob Swihart of Purdue University did the study with Jake Goheen, a former Purdue student now at the University of New Mexico. The two researchers estimate that several times as many walnuts grow when gathered by gray squirrels as pared to red squirrels. Gray squirrels and red squirrels do not store nuts and seeds in the same way. Gray squirrels bury nuts one at a time in a number of places. _3_ So some nuts remain in the ground. Conditions are right for them to develop and grow the following spring. Red squirrels, however, store large groups of nuts above ground. Professor Swihart calls “death traps for seeds”_4_ But Professor Swihart says their numbers began to decrease as more forests were cut for agriculture. Red squirrels began to spread through the state during the past century. The researchers say red squirrels are native to forests that stay green all year, unlike walnut trees. They say the cleaning of forest land for agriculture has helped red squirrels invade (涌入) Indiana. _5_AGray squirrels are native to Indiana.BBut they seldom remember where they buried every nut.CRed squirrels bury nuts in a different way.DThe black walnut is the nut of choice for both kinds of squirrels.EJake Goheen calls them a sign of an environmental problem more than a cause.FScientists are worried that they will drive away the gray squirrels.GWell, scientists have been busy gathering information about what the squirrels do with the food they collect. 1G根据下段第一句“They examined differences between red squirrels and gray squirrels in the American state of Indiana.” 2D根据空格后“The black walnut tree is also a central part of some.”中的also可知,空格前在讲the black walnut tree。3B根据下文中“So some nuts remain in the ground.” In xx, as ninth guiders, Finn and Anna volunteered to deliver produce to Woodstocks local food pantry (食物储藏室) through the _1_ (organize), Change the World Kids.
