The Art of Communication CYoung women who take part in beauty contests (比赛) are helping to keep alive an outdated opinion of women that a womans most important value is how she looks. Women have been working very hard through the years to change their image. They have been trying to prove that the value of a woman does not lie only in her beauty. The world is just beginning to recognize that women are as smart, wise and strong in personality as men are, and that there are qualities more important than looks when judging people. When women take part in beauty contests for top prizes, they encourage people to value them for their beauty alone. It is unfair to say that beauty alone determines ones worth.Beauty contests not only encourage spectators (观众) to judge women by their appearance, but they encourage this idea in the contestants as well. These young women spend months losing weight to be the “right” size and learning how to dress, wear makeup, and walk just right so that some judges will consider them beautiful. I think its great for a woman to feel good about her appearance, but looks shouldnt be sought after in an extreme or unreasonable way. There are too many other, more important things in a young womans life: learning, developing friendships and preparing for their future work and perhaps a family. As long as there are beauty contests, women wont be fully recognized as well-rounded human beings.29. According to the text, women have tried to change their image by _ . A. proving they are as good as men B. paying attention to their clothes C. winning more beauty contests D. encouraging people to value their beauty30. What do women usually do in preparation for beauty contests? A. Learn about their personality. B. Do everything for their bodies. C. Choose the right size dresses. D. Develop friendship with spectators.31. What can we infer from the text?A. Looks determine everything.B. Wisdom carries much weight.C. Spectators should have their voices heard.D. Qualities other than looks are more important. 32. According to the author, beauty contests are _ . A. disrespectful to women B. unpleasant to contestants C. necessary for modern society D. helpful in improving womens image DCan you do the math:What is one hundred times four, divided by the square root of a hundred? How can you work it out quickly? The answer is forty. Years ago, three scientists at Texas Instruments, Jerry Merryman, James Van Tassel and Jack Kilby, invented the handheld electronic calculator. Their first device could add, subtract, multiply and divide and it was small and easy to take. Yet after forty years, calculators in the classroom still add up to the same old debate. Generally, calculators are considered to be useful - especially with more complex math. Some math teachers at every level support the use of calculators and students are even permitted to use them when they take college entrance tests. But it is also thought that young students should know basic calculation before they begin using them. Some education experts think calculators are used too much. Children, they say, learn to depend on these electronic brains instead of their own. Calculators may not only give students answers to questions they do not really understand, they may also keep them from discovering ideas for themselves. Other experts, though, say calculators have helped make mathematics more understandable to more students. They say calculators give students more time to understand and solve problems, and to develop a better sense of what numbers mean. That way, the reasoning goes, they can feel better about their abilities.33Which of the following calculation agrees with the question raised in the 1st paragraph? A B C D34We can infer from the passage that_in the past Amath teachers supported using calculators everywhere Bstudents were not allowed to use calculator in tests Cusing calculators in classrooms was under argument Dyoung students had to know how to use calculators35According to experts, calculators benefit students in many ways EXCEPT_. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject. Make good use of your time in class. _38_ Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. _39_ If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and youll remember it longer. Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world wont end if you dont pass a test, so dont be over worried. _40_ You will probably discover them after you have tried these.A.
