With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark building, ships and other vehicles related to a country. The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive artifact. It is , rather, the product of thousands of years development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction. Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. Peoples food supplies were similarly vulnerable (易受损害的). Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another. Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems (图腾)before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves. These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked: The king of China around 1008 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.1. The best title for the passage would be_ A. Uses of Flags B. Power of the National FlagC. Type of Flags D. Development of the National Flag2. The earliest flags were connected with heavenly power because_A. they could tell wind directionB. they could bring good luck to fightersC. they were believed to stand for natural forces.D. they were handed down by the ancestors3. The ship will largely recreate the design and decoration of the fabled original, with some modifications to keep it in line with current safety rules and shipbuilding practices, and the addition of some modern comforts such as air conditioning, Palmer said at a press conference in New York. The three passenger classes, however, will be prevented from mingling(混杂), as in 1912, Palmer said. “Im not too superstitious(迷信的).”Palmer said when asked whether recreating a ship bestknown for sinking was tempting fate.White Star Line, the operator of the original ship, had said the Titanic was designed to be unsinkable. About 1, 500 people died on Titanics maiden voyage in 1912 from Southampton to New York after the ship collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Palmer, who created the company Blue Star Line last year, refused to make a similar boast. “Anything will sink if you put a hole in it, ” Palmer said. “I think it would be very cavalier to say it.” Unlike the original, Titanicwill have more than enough space in its lifeboats for every person on board and will have additional escape staircases. Markku Kanerva, sales director at Deltamarin, the Finnish company designing the ship, said it would be the “safest cruise ship in the world”Palmer refused to answer questions about the projects cost. Although the Titanic was the worlds largest ship in her time, she would be smaller than many of todays modern cruise ships. “Its not about the money,” Palmer said. “Ive got enough money for it. I think thats all that matters.” Forbes estimated Palmers net worth to be $795 million in 2012.He describes himself as a billionaire. Titanicwill be built by Chinese state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard, which has already built four ore carriers for Palmers mining business, he said. In a lot of womens eyes Ive probably already failed in that respect due to the amount of pink princess Barbie (芭比娃娃) mess cluttering up (堆满) Veras room. But I will say something about Barbie: I played with that stuff for a solid decade when I was growing up and here I am now at a healthy weight with a healthy outlook on my body and image. I have a successful career. If Barbie was really so damaging to my femininity (女性气质) and self-image I highly doubt I could list all of the accomplishments. But I get it too. Its hard for women to maintain a healthy self-image. I have girlfriends around whom I have to brace myself to see, because just being around them makes me self-conscious. I look at old pictures of my mother and wonder why Ive never been able to be as skinny as she was. And then I have friends who are thinner than their mothers ever were. We women go round and round in circles, holding hands and trying to be one another sometimes. Men like to think we dress and style ourselves for them, but why would we when they hardly notice? Ive never tried so hard to look good when I know Im about to meet up with a stylish girlfriend. Its she who will notice my slimmed-down waist or the thinnest, little bracelet on my arm.And I have no doubt that the two of you, Veronica and Juliette, will endlessly compare yourselves to each other. You will wonder why one of you got longer legs or shinier hair. The thing Ill tell you is this: not even the prettiest of us feel settled. The girl you think looks the most perfect in the world is probably the girl who wants to change herself more than anyone else.Dont take these on. You are not worthless. You are so full of love and light and you should let it shine through your every second. If someone pushes you down for standing tall then just push yourself back up and stand even taller. And know that the reason they push you down in the first place is just because theyre scared.68. From the second paragraph, we can infer that the author _.A. regrets buying so much Barbie stuff for her daughtersB. thinks loving Barbie makes her not confident about her self-imageC. owes her beauty and success to playing with BarbieD. thinks playing with Barbie caused no damage to her beauty and success69.
