Twelve new-style schools are open to act as a bridge to the workplace and cut the number of NEETs.Under plans, schools will operate longer days and work outside standard school terms. Each teenager will be expected to spend between four hours and two days a week on work placements with business related to the school and a personal coach will be sent to the teenagers to act as a school “line manager”.The reforms (改革) are put forward because of the fears that too many teenagers are finishing full-time education at present but they are short of the skills needed to succeed in the workplace. According to a recent report, more than two thirds of employers (雇主) believe school and college leavers have less important employability skills, while 55% say they are unable to manage their time or daily routine. And the number of NEETs who are not in education has hit a record high, with almost one-in-five young people being left without a job or a training place. The Department for Education will tell the public the building of 12 studio schools providing for around 3,600 teenagers in areas such as Liverpool, Stevenage, Stock-on-Trent and Fulham, west London. Each one will be connected to the local employers. Under plans, teenagers will be able to move out of ordinary schools to attend them between the ages of 14 and 19.The government said all subjects would be taught “through projects, often prepared with employers” with rules such as science being connected directly to local engineering companies or hospitals. Schools will operate a longer day to give teenagers a better understanding of the needs of the workplace. Along with their studies, students will carry out work placements for four hours a week, rising to two days a week of paid work for those aged 16 to 19. They will also get the chance to take professional qualifications (专业资历) connected directly to the needs of local employers.(1)According to the passage, NEETs refer to those who _.A . often miss classes from studio schoolB . prefer studio schools to ordinary schoolsC . refuse to take any part-time job after schoolD . are not in education, employment or training(2)Compared to ordinary schools, studio schools will offer the young more _.A . skills to finish full-time educationB . personal coaches to help with the workC . chances to get future jobs with job trainingD . jobs to make money without going outside(3)What makes the government decide to build studio schools?A . The worry about educated teenagers short of working skills.B . The doubt about whether full-time education is perfect.C . The decision to solve the problems of unemployment.D . The increasing number of teens who drop out early.(4)What can be the best title for the passage?A . Studio schools are popular in UK at present.B . More NEETs will find jobs from Studio schoolsC . Teenagers will get jobs without full-time education.D . Studio schools are built to improve teens employability skills.10. (6分)阅读理解Many years ago, I was a very shy girl at my school. I couldnt forget the way I had frozen in front of the class. My hands had shaken so badly that I couldnt read my notes. My voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly stopped me, “Masha, I know youre shy, but you worked hard on this project. If I give you another chance tomorrow, can you find your courage?I had nodded. I had kept my head down, hoping that the school day would end soon. When I got home that day, I could see an inviting light from the kitchen windows. Momma was backing. When Momma backed, I always watched and chatted with her. She said it was my company that made her baked goods taste so sweet.Momma studied my face as I came into the kitchen. “Whats wrong, Masha?” Tears shone in my eyes. I let the whole story out. Momma was silent for a moment. Then she said, “Let me show you something.”I followed Momma to her bedroom and carefully took out a blue ribbon that said “First Place” from it.“I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. I won it for public speaking. It wasnt easyI was not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”That was the second time someone had told me that. I followed Momma back to the kitchen. What was it that made me so afraid? Soon Mommas sweet cake rose in the pans, and the smell of it comforted me as I wondered where I would find my courage. Momma put a thick piece in front of me. “ Theres nothing better for heartache than Mommas love baked in a cake.”I raised a forkful of warm cake to my mouth. All the fear in the world could not take away Mommas love. I felt safe in Mommas kitchen. It was warm from the bottom of the heart. The next day I walked to the front of the classroom to give my presentation again. As I faced the class, I remember the ribbon and the smell of Mommas kitchen and then took a deep breath and began to speak with confidence. Finally I succeeded.(1)Why was Masha unhappy that day?A . She was not good with her classmates.B . Her teacher criticized her.C . She didnt perform well in front of the class.D . She failed in an exam.(2)How many times had people told Masha she need find courage?A . OnceB . TwiceC . Third timesD . Many times(3)_ help Masha find her courage.A . Mommas blue ribbonB . Mommas cakeC . Mr. RobertsD . Mommas love(4)Whats the best title of this passage?A . My mother and IB . I found my courage againC . My shynessD . The blue ribbon and the cake made by Momma11. (10分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 The Vine That Ate the SouthKudzu is a fast-growing vine (蔓生植物) that covers a large area in the southern United States. It is so common that one might think it is a native plant, but it is not. Kudzu was brought to the United States from Japan in 1876. Many Americans thought it was beautiful, and they began to plant it. They didnt know it could grow up to a foot a day during the summer months. Nor did they know it would grow up and over anything in its path (路径).In Japan, kudzu experienced cold winters and a short growing season. But in the United States, it has a very long growing season with warm and wet southern weather. It is fine weather for the vine to grow fast.In the 1920s, people used the vine to feed farm animals. Ten years later, the government supported to plant kudzu because it kept soil (土壤) from washing away. However, by the 1950s, the government no longer wanted people to plant the vine. Twenty years after that, the government said it was a harmful plant. The vine grows up trees and buildings, making some beautiful shapes. However, trees die after kudzu covers them because they cannot get enough light. Scientists are looking for ways to kill the vine. They used poisons (毒药)to kill the vine. However, some of the poisons made it grow even better. Scientists also find it difficult to dig up Kudzu. The plant is really tough.Because kudzu is so hard to kill, some people are making the best of it. So they try to find different uses for the vine. They find the vine can be used to make paper and baskets, it can be used to feed the goats, and it can even be eaten by people. Scientists are studying it in the hope that the vine can be used as a medicine. At the very least, kudzu serves as an example of the unexpected results that can come from non-native plants.(1)We can learn from the passage that _. A . kudzu mostly grows in the northern AmericaB . kudzu was brought to Japan from AmericaC . kudzu grows very fast in warm and wet weatherD . American government has never supported to plant kudzu(2)The underlined word tough in Paragraph 4 probably means _. A . not easily brokenB . widely usedC . hard to growD . important to ones health(3)The last paragraph is mostly about _. A . how quickly the vine growsB . how people use the vineC . why people want to kill the vineD . why people eat the vine(4)The writer uses the title The Vine That Ate the South most probably to _. A . let readers know that kudzu is a vineB . interest readers in a humorous wayC . tell readers the vine is a kind of foodD . get readers to realize the passage is serious12.
