Jr. was born in Georgia in 1929. When he was still a boy, Martin learned that his people, the black Americans, were often treated differently from most of their fellow Americans. Many could not attend good schools, get good jobs, or live in nice houses because of the color of their skin. Martin knew that in a free country this was wrong. He wanted to help his black brothers, so he decided to go to school to get good education. He became a minister (牧师) in Montgomery, Alabama. This is where Martin Luther Kings “peaceful fight” first began. Dr. King held the belief that the only way people could win their rights was to remain peaceful, even in face of danger. Later Martin Luther King, became a famous lawyer and a great leader of black people who fight for equal rights. In 1963,his efforts led to the Great March (大游行) on Washington, where King delivered his famous speech “I Have a Dream”. Here he raised public concern for the civil rights (民权) movement. Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his achievements and courage. The whole nation mourned when the terrible event happened on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. Martin Luther King. Jr. was shot. The man who had preached (倡导) nonviolence (非暴力) died violently. But Dr. Kings dream can never die. Many Americans are still struggling to make that dream come true. The following is part of his famous speech delivered during the Great March:I have a dream today!I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. 1Martin Luther Kings “peaceful fight” first began _.A. when he went to schoolB. after he became a ministerC. after the Great MarchD. after he became a leader of black people答案与解析B文章第一段中的“He became a minister in Montgomery, Alabama. You wont find any church there just a simple stone house full of teenagers and the woman who draws them in.Her name is Vy Higginsen, a New York theater producer. Five years ago she created something called “Gospel for Teens”If youre thinking that Higginsen thought up this program as a way to save the teens, youd be wrong. She did it to save the music. The faces and voices of Gospel for Teens include kids between the ages of 13 and 19 who gather in Harlem each week from all over New York and New Jersey to study the tradition and the art of singing gospel.Higginsen runs an advanced (高级的) class, but each fall she brings in a new group, putting out a call for auditions (试音) in local papers, on radio, and in churches. She calls them her “beginners”Yolanda Howard, age 14, had arrived by subway from the Bronx very early. “I was so happy because I was the first person,” she said. And she brought along her friend Rhonda Rodriguez. Asked if she was nervous, Rodriguez told Lesley Stahl, a reporter, “I was really nervous.”“Did they really have to be great in the audition?” Stahl asked Higginsen.“No,” she replied. “We dont expect them to be great. Theyre teenagers.”One girl who auditioned only knew little about music. “Thats why we have this school!” said Higginsen. So she and the teachers she calls music masters including her own daughter Knoelle want to accept as many kids as they can.And that next Saturday, there they were: the 46 kids Higginsen chose as her new beginners, including Yolanda Howard and her friend Rhonda Rodriguez, who thought she wouldnt get in, but Higginsen had decided to give her a chance.语篇解读本文是记叙文。Vy Higginsen创建了名为Gospel for Teens的组织,其目的不是为了挽救青少年,而是为了挽救音乐。5Which of the following is the best title for the text?A. You dont need to know everything!B. Give nervous kids a chance!C. Go to the audition!D. Save the music!答案与解析D标题归纳题。本文围绕Vy Higginsen创建的名为Gospel for Teens的组织展开描述, Vy Higginsen创建该组织的目的不是为了挽救青少年,而是为了挽救音乐。故D项最适合作为本文标题。6Gospel for Teens was founded to _.A. help kids behave themselvesB. raise money to build a churchC. teach the tradition and the art of gospel musicD. offer kids a chance to meet some new friends答案与解析C细节理解题。根据第四段末的“. to study the tradition and the art of singing gospel”可知答案。7According to the text, Vy Higginsen _.A. works as a music teacherB. organizes the audition every yearC. founded Gospel for Teens 13 years agoD. has a daughter who is under the age of 19答案与解析B细节理解题。根据第五段中的“each fall she brings in a new group, putting out a call for auditions (试音) in local papers, on radio, and in churches”可知答案。8By saying “We dont expect them to be great”, Vy Higginsen means _.A. few teenagers know how to sing gospel musicB. she helps teenagers to develop their musical talentC. great teenagers can take advanced classes without auditionsD. teenagers are always too nervous to show their talent in the auditions答案与解析B推理判断题。根据本句话后的“Theyre teenagers.”及下一段中的“One girl who auditioned only knew little about music. Thats why we have this school! said Higginsen.”可推测, Vy Higginsen认为青少年不懂音乐很正常,他们开设这个音乐课程的目的就是为了帮助他们培养音乐才能。.短文改错Dear Mary,Im writing to asking for your advices on how to get along with my roommate Rose.
