Feminist novels女权主义小说浅谈IntroductionIn this essay the feminist ideas of two novels Pride and prejudice and Jane Eyre, will be discussed.Background:During the 17th and 18th century there was no essential role for women on society. They have few activities they used to do it such as; painting, play music; sewing, presence the parties (for purpose), they even did not think to develop their life. At that time there were two major ideas that predominated women mind wealth and marriage, how they can make it real to marry rich man, this idea was clear shown on Pride and Prejudice and on some situation of Jane Eyre. Feminist writers:Writers at that time write about women in their novels and canon, in general to make prestige for the novels. There were writers who critics feminist literature. At first in 1960 women were represented on two roles; good like angle, or bad like a devil there is no middle between the two roles. But in 1970 Elaine Showalter (feminist writer) had represented woman on different ways, first they have a character that change or develop and allowed for it to make mistake to develop to be a good person that thing was not acceptable before that time.Another two writers Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar they show us that women were under a strong stress of their society, this idea shown on Jane Eyre on Bertha situation that the stress she faced from her husband drives her to madness.On Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen portrays her heroine as rebellious women. Elizabeth is lovely, beautiful; clever, in the novel is defined as dialogue. She always faced the abused behave for her class. The background of the novel isnt clear this novel was during the French revolution so there was few men who live in the town so the composition between women were big. Mrs Bennet Elizabeths mother she is strong, do what she want, she always dreams to see her daughters married there is noting have her concern like this subject; Austen used her to focus about the importance of marriage to young ladies. Another aspect show feminist ideas the stress that Elizabeth faced when Mr.Collins offer to marry her but she refuse him “ very well-and this offer of marriage you have refused” for her she prefer her love (Darcy) more than money that Mr.Collins have, and this behave seem strange or unordinary for women at that time. There an important point that should mention that the house that the (any) family live in if the owner die his uncle or another male inherited the house not his wife or his daughters this point show us that these women even when her patron die no thing left for her even the place she lived in. Austan also show us untraditional behave from her heroine when Elizabeth walk on thee mud and her dress and foot dirty this were not acceptable and described as ill-mannered of her.So Elizabeth was different from the female at her age she faced all the boring role that women were do it and change the society view of her class. Jane Eyre:” Women are supposed to be very calm generally: but women feel just as men feel; they need exercise for their faculties, and a field for their efforts as much as their brothers do; they suffer from too rigid a restraint, too absolute a stagnation, precisely as men would suffer; and it is narrow-minded in their more privileged fellow-creatures to say that they ought to confine themselves to making puddings and knitting stockings, to playing on the piano and embroidering bags. It is thoughtless to condemn them, or laugh at them, if they seek to do more or learn more than custom has pronounced necessary for their sex”.This is Jane Eyre feminist philosophy it is clear that she and her class had faced stress abuse from upper class and from male in general. Working, as governess at that time was exhausting they were paid like employer but they less or more than servant they were not classify exactly in which class they were. There were three male in the novel is the symbols of despotism they subjugation Jane so she could not express her thought or feeling, ST.John River, Mr.Brocklehurst, and Mr.Rochester who love her and offer to marry her but she refuse because they are unequal in class even if they equal in intellectual. The different between Victorian class “ do you think, I am poor, obscureI am soulless and heart nessI have much think as you”. At the end of the novel Jane agree to marry Rochester specially after he lost his hand and eye she feel more strong of him and his need ness of her, they become equal and finally she felt independent and became his prop and guide.
