张其凤 Spring Festival The Spring Festival, one of the most important ancient traditional festivals, as well as Chinese unique festival at the lunar calendar, is also called Chinese New Year. Since the Shun period(21 century BC), the Spring Festival custom has been extended till now. The Spring Festival generally refers to the New Years Eve and the first month of the new year. There are a lot of legends about Spring Festival. The most famous one is “the year beast” fable. “The year beast” cruel terrible wild animal. In ancient times, there are monsters called years “ that appear to hurt people and animals at regular time. Once, year goes out for wounding again, but meets a old man who wears red clothes and lights bamboos. Since then, people called this day the Spring Festival . The Chinese name of dumpling is “JIAO ZI”, ”JIAO” means ”cross”, ”ZI” is Chinese traditional time represents “24:00”, so the Chinese word “JIAO ZI” means “cross 24:00”, just the dividing point of last year and next year. So when it comes to 24:00, every family begins eating dumplings. The Lantern Festival(元宵节) The lunar January (农历正月)is the first month of a year and the 15th day is the first day of full moon. The Lantern Festival can date back to Qin dynasty(221-206BC). Its said that the Han emperor set up the Lantern Festival in order to commemorate “Ping Lu” . During Lantern Festival, people go along the street to watch lanterns(灯笼) and children light their own small lanterns for some fun. The biggest and most beautiful lantern is the dragon lantern, which looks like a flying dragon, held by several young guys. One with a ball in hand leads the dragon to move. Some lanterns have puzzles on them, called lantern riddles(灯谜), the one who gets the answer could receive small presents and be happy for his intelligence. The traditional food for Lantern Festival is glutinous rice ball(元宵). The glutinous rice balls shape is just like the full moon appears in the sky. This kind of dessert is especially welcomed by children. 元宵节的传统美食就是元宵啦。 元宵的形状就像是天空中的满月。 这种甜品,尤其受儿童的欢迎。 Tomb-Sweeping Day The Tomb-Sweeping Day is a traditional Chinese festival on the 104th day after the winter solstice冬至(or the 15th day after the Spring Equinox春分), usually occurring around April 5 of the Gregorian calendar 阳历(see Chinese calendar). Astronomically it is also a solar term节气. The Tomb-Sweeping Day falls on the first day of the fifth solar term, named Qing Ming. Its name denotes a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime (踏青 Tqng, treading on the greenery) and tend to the graves of departed ones. 清明节是中国的传统节日,冬至后的104天(或春分后的15天),通常在公历5月(农历)发生。同时它也是一个节气(参见清明)。清明节落在第五个节气的第一天,命名为清明。清明前后这段时间人们都会组织去踏青,而且多会去陵园看望已去的故人。 THE DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. It is one of the most important Chinese festivals. 端午节,又称为五五节,在阴历五月的第五天被庆祝。他是中国最重要的节日之一。 Due to the poet ,Qu Yuan,died on thisday when has become a traditionalfestival of the Han Chinese people commemorate Qu Yuan; in some areas, the day also commemorate Wu Zixu and Cao E. 后因诗人屈原在这一天死去,便成了 中国汉族人民纪念屈原的传统节日;部分地区也有纪念伍子胥、曹娥等说法。 一 Hanging Pictures of Zhong Kui二 Hanging Calamus and Moxa(挂菖蒲和艾草)三 Dragon Boat Race四 The Culture of Zongzi五 Spice Bag六 Realgar Wine Dragon boat race is an indispensable(不可缺少的) part of the festival, held all over the country. As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoes(独木舟) pulling the oars hurriedly, and speeding toward their destination with rapid drums . 龙舟赛是这个节日中不可缺少的一部分,在全国各地举行。鸣枪之后,人们会看到龙舟手在龙舟上快速地拉桨,伴随着激烈的鼓声,奋力朝着他们的目的地前进。 DOUBLE SEVENTH FESTIVAL The Double Seventh Festival, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, is a traditional festival full of romance. It often goes into August in the Gregorian calendar. This festival is in mid-summer when the weather is warm and the grass and trees reveal their luxurious greens. At night when the sky is dotted with stars, and people can see the Milky Way spanning from the north to the south. On each bank of it is a bright star, which see each other from afar. They are the Cowherd and Weaver Maid, and there is a beautiful love story about them passed down from generation to generation. 阴历的七月七日,七夕节,是一个传统节日充满浪漫。它通常在公历八月。这个节日是在盛夏,当天气暖和、草地和树木茂盛,满山果树。晚上,当天空被星星点缀的时候,人们可以看到银河系横跨南北。在银河的两岸有两颗璀璨的星星,他们可以看到彼此。他们是牛郎和织女,有一个美丽的爱情故事代代相传 STORY Long, long ago, there was an honest and kind-hearted fellow named Niu Lang (Cowhand). His parents died when he was a child. Later he was driven out of his home by his sister-in-law. So he lived by himself herding cattle and farming. One day, a fairy from heaven Zhi Nv (Weaver Maid) fell in love with him and came down secretly to earth and married him. The cowhand farmed in the field and the Weaver Maid wove at home. They lived a happy life and gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortunately, the God of Heaven soon found out the fact and ordered the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens to bring the Weaver Maid back. With the help of celestial cattle, the Cowhand flew to heaven with his son and daughter. At the time when he was about to catch up with his wife, the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairpins and made a stroke. One billowy river appeared in front of the Cowhand. The Cowhand and Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and could only feel their tears. Their loyalty to love touched magpies, so tens of thousands of magpies came to build a bridge for the Cowhand and Weaver Maid to meet each other. The Queen Mother was eventually moved and allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunar month. Hence their meeting date has been called Qi Xi (Double Seventh). 相传牛郎父母早逝,又常受到哥嫂的虐待,只有一头老牛相伴。有一天老牛给他出了计谋,教他怎样娶织女做妻子。到了那一天,美丽的仙女们果然到银河沐浴,并在水中嬉戏。这时藏在芦苇中的牛郎突然跑出来拿走了织女的衣裳。惊惶失措的仙女们急忙上岸穿好衣裳飞走了,唯独剩下织女。在牛郎的恳求下,织女答应做他的妻子。婚后,牛郎织女男耕女织,相亲相爱,生活得十分幸福美满。织女还给牛郎生了一儿一女。后来,老牛要死去的时候,叮嘱牛郎要把它的皮留下来,到急难时披上以求帮助。老牛死后,夫妻俩忍痛剥下牛皮,把牛埋在山坡上。 织女和牛郎成亲的事被天庭的玉帝和王母娘娘知道后,他们勃然大怒,并命令天神下界抓回织女。天神趁牛郎不在家的时候,抓走了织女。牛郎回家不见织女,急忙披上牛皮,担了两个小孩追去。眼看就要追上,王母娘娘心中一急,拔下头上的金簪向银河一划,昔日清浅的银河一霎间变得浊浪滔天,牛郎再也过不去了。从此,牛郎织女只能泪眼盈盈,隔河相望,天长地久,玉皇大帝和王母娘娘也拗不过他们之间的真挚情感,准许他们每年七月七日相会一次,相传,每逢七月初七,人间的喜鹊就要飞上天去,在银河为牛郎织女搭鹊桥相会。此外,七夕夜深人静之时,人们还能在葡萄架或其他的瓜果架下听到牛郎织女在天上的脉脉情话。 Mid-Autumn Festival(中秋节) The Mid-autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. According to history records, Chinese emperor has tradition that worship the Sun in spring and worship the Moon in autumn. As august 15th is exactly the middle of autumn, so it is called Mid-Autumn Day. Mid-Autumn Day is a traditional festival in China. Almost everyone likes to eat moon cakes on that day. Most families have a dinner together to celebrate the festival. A saying goes, The moon in your hometown is almost always the brightest and roundest. Many people who live far away from homes want to go back to have a family reunion. How happy it is to enjoy the moon cakes while watching the full moon with your family members. Worship the full moon Admire the full moon Eat moon cakes The Double Ninth Festival(重阳节) Chinese believes nine represents sun, the brightest thing, September 9th has two nine, the sun is doubled, so call it Double Ninth Festival. Nine also means Long in Chinese words, so the Double Ninth Festival is also recognized The Old Festival. Being a traditional holiday as well, it is still now celebrated quite often in many regions. Early during the Spring and Autumn period, more than 2500 years ago, Winter solstice was first determined as the Chinese traditional solar term among the total 24 terms. In Gregorian calendar, it is around Dec 22nd or 23rd. 冬至是中国农历的一个非常重要的节气。作为一个传统节日,许多地区现在依然在过冬至。早在春秋时期,到现在有2500多年的历史,冬至最先确定为中国传统节气共24项。在公历中,它大约是12月22日或23日。 The Laba Festival The Laba Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the eighth day of the twelfth month of the lunar calendar. “La” is the name given to the 12th lunar month and 8 is pronounced as “ba” in Chinese, which translated is “Laba.” The Laba festival can trace back to Xia dynasty(21 century-16centuryBC). But what we know today is that this festival started as a sacrificial offering to ancestors. It was also a time for the ancient Chinese to pray to heaven and earth that there would be a bountiful harvest.
