More importantly, they are carried on from generation to generation as a verbal legacy. Children around the world hear these stories throughout their childhood. Parents and older siblings use this to their advantage by reminding the children to behave, or else. or just to scare the little ones late at night, in a dark room. In Panama, the legend of the Tulivieja has become part of every Panamanians childhood. I am told that older siblings, especially, tell this story to the younger ones late at night in the dark. In this newsletter, you will read the story of the Tulivieja and learn how it has become a part of everyday life in Panama. A long time ago, when the spirits lived among the mortals and were visible to them, one of the spirits incarnated itself into a beautiful girl. She became the pride of her town. A young boy fell in love with her and they produced a child. However, the beautiful girl, who was really a spirit, drowned the child to hide her true identity. It is said that God punished her for her sin by turning her into the Tulivieja. From a beautiful girl, the spirit was turned into a horrible monster. She has a face full of holes, long and bristly hair, claws instead of hands, the body of a cat and the feet of a horse. But the corporal change was not the brunt of her punishment. She was condemned to look for her drowned child forever. She continues to search along the riverbanks endlessly and call for her child in a voice that sounds like screeching birds. Por ello, el boletn del presente mes ser un repaso de aqullas figuras literarias, artsticas y cinematogrficas que a travs de su expresin han forjado la cultura latinoamericana. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) es una de las artistas femeninas ms clebres de Mxico. Sin embargo, su aspiracin de ser artista se desarroll nicamente a raz de un grave accidente automovilstico que la inspir a ensearse a s misma a pintar, recin a partir de los dieciocho aos. Hoy por hoy, es respetada internacionalmente por sus autoretratos de colores vivos y chocantes. Kahlo encontr tempranamente el apoyo de su marido Diego Rivera (1886- 1957), un artista altamente entrenado cuyos soberbios murales, se ha dicho, han resucitado la pintura al fresco en Latinoamrica. Estos murales son reconocidos tambin por el uso audaz del color que emplea, pero a diferencia de la obra ms personal de su esposa, Rivera trata temas mexicanistas de mayor relieve histrico. Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) de Chile es considerado uno de los mejores escritores de poemas de amor en el mundo. Se especula que Pablo Neruda (nacido Neftal Ricardo Reyes Basoalto) se decidi por escribir y publicar bajo este seudnimo para despistar a su padre, cuya crtica hacia desalentar sus deseos de escribir. Fue otorgado el premio Nobel de la literatura en 1971. Otra poeta chilena, Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957) fue la primera mujer latinoamericana en adjudicarse este mismo galardn en 1945. Sus poemas reflejan su pasin por las causas humanas, inspiracin que entre otras sirvi en gran medida a su comunidad. Tambin se desempe como educadora, funcionaria cultural, y enviada diplomtica a varios pases europeos. Jorge Luis Borges y Gabriel Garca Mrquez probablemente son los dos autores latinoamericanos que ms han logrado incursionar en la primera plana de la literatura mundial. Borges (1899-1986), argentino, es reconocido por su trato del tiempo en su obra. Al igual que Frida Kahlo, un accidente casi fatal le sirvi de inspiracin para un periodo altamente creativo, del cual surgieron los grandes cuentos por los que hoy se lo recuerda. Garca Mrquez (1928) por su parte, inici su carrera como periodista en Colombia, y desde entonces se ha sabido establecer como escritor de novelas y cuentos cortos. Su obra se fa de su estilo, el realismo mgico, para combinar realidad y fantasa en un mismo plano narrativo. Fue premiado con el Nobel de la literatura en 1982. El novelista brasileo Jorge Amado (1912) empez su carrera literaria a los veinte aos, edad en la cual public su primer libro. La mayora de sus novelas describen la vida urbana de las clases marginadas de Bahia, sacando a la luz su filosofa de izquierda. Su obra suele satirizar el gobierno de Brasil, por lo cual se prohibieron sus libros y fue encarcelado en 1935. Walter Salles, ms recientemente alabado por su filme Central do Brasil (Estacin Central) es uno de los cineastas brasileos ms aclamados de los ltimos tiempos. Se inici como un director de documentales en 1986 tratando inquietudes sociales en Brasil y la bsqueda de identidad tanto nacional como individual. Contina abordando temas similares en su cine, como lo hecho en Estacin Central, en el cual nos cuenta la historia de un joven hurfano y su relacin con una mujer que escribe cartas para los analfabetos desde la Estacin Central de Rio. Sea dando voz a los marginados, o llevando en un viaje de fantasa a los aficionados del arte, escritores, artistas y cineastas latinoamericanos han logrado impregnar su huella muy hondo en la cultura del siglo veinte.
