Getting into Columbia College shows what a great wellrounded student you are.Your academic, artistic, and social skills have truly blossomed in the last few years.Whether it is getting the highest grade in mathematics, completing your elegant fashion design, successfully selling your painted running shoes,or becoming one of the top speakers in Model United Nations, you have become a talented and accomplished young woman. You should be as proud of yourself as we are.College will be the most important years in your life. It is in college that you will truly discover what learning is about. This will be the period where you go from teachertaught to masterinspired, after which you must become a selflearner. So do take each subject seriously, and even if what you learn isnt critical for your life, the skills of learning will be important to you forever.Follow your passion in college. Take courses you think you will enjoy. Dont be trapped in what others think or say.Do your best in classes, but dont let pressure get to you. Your mother and I have no expectations for your grades. If you graduate and learn something in your four years,we would feel happy. So please dont give yourself pressure.I told your mom Im writing this letter, and asked what she wanted me to say. She thought and said,“Just ask her to take care of herself.” Please listen to your mother and take care of yourself. So please treasure your college years, make the best of your free time, and become an independent thinker; learn and grow through your successes and challenges.Love, Dad (&Mum)21Saras performance in the last few years makes his parents _.AannoyedBproudCupsetDconcerned22What did Father mainly write about in Paragraph 2?ALearning skills.BCollege courses.CLearning attitude.DWays of selflearning.23What do we know about Mom and Dad from the letter?AThey expect too much of Sara. BThey put lots of pressure on Sara.CThey love their daughter very much. DThey advise Sara to make more friends.BSquirrels arent natural city dwellers(居民). 1986 the sight of one in a tree near New Yorks city hall so surprised passers-by that a newspaper published a report about the“unusual visitor”.Around that time, the tree-dwelling animals were being set free in Americas urban areas to create pockets of peace and calm like the countryside, says University of Pennsylvania historian Etienne Benson, who studied our relationship to squirrels over the course of five years.First, they were introduced to Philadelphia, then to New Haven, Boston, and New York City. Park visitors were encouraged to feed them, and security guards ensured their safety. In the 1910s a leader of the Boy Scouts of America(an organization teaching boys practical skills)said that teaching children to feed squirrels could show the rewards of treating a weaker creature with sympathy, says Benson.By the early 20th century, though, America began to regret the friendliness it had shown squirrels. Cities had once been filled with animals-from horses pulling goods to dairy cows, By the 1950s those working animals had been moved to the countryside. Pets and wild animals such as birds and squirrels were all that remained of the urban animal kingdom. Before long, peoples enthusiasm for squirrels wore off, and they started to see them as annoyances. By the 1970s many parks banned feeding the creatures. Today, it is rare to find kids with their parents offering food to squirrels under a tree. And, unfortunately, with more and more buildings being constructed in the city, fewer inhabitable(适宜栖息的)areas are left for the little tree- dwelling animals. What would be lost if the last of these city dwellers were forced to leave? I think theres something constructive to have other living creatures in the city that are not humans and not pets but share the land with us, says Benson. Its a good thing to live in a landscape where you see other creatures going around making lunch. Its good for the soul.24. Whats the purpose of introducing squirrels to Philadelphia?A. To entertain park visitors.B. To keep the natural balance.C. To encourage kids to protect animals.D. To make the urban life more peaceful.25. What was the Boy Scouts leaders attitude towardsA. Disagreeable. B. Doubtful.C. Supportive. D. Uncaring.26. What might have happened to squirrels in cities around the 1960s?A. They might have inhabited more homes.B. They might have begun to go out of favor.C. They might have been introduced to more cities.D. They might have been moved to the countryside.27. What does Benson suggest in the last paragraph?A. Squirrels living in cities are annoying.B. Feeding squirrels should be discouraged.C. Squirrels should be allowed to live in cities.D. It is possible for people to keep squirrels as pets. CLondon has become a cyclefriendly zone after the launch of a new bike hire scheme. It has been designed to encourage more people to cycle in and around central London. So how does it work? First you have to sign up for the scheme to be sent a key. The key will unlock one of the bikes, which are kept at docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay an access fee for the key and then you pay as you go for the length of time you use the bike. Transport for London, which runs the scheme,is hoping to have 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion(拥挤) in London and is expected to create up to 40,000 extra cycle trips a day into the city centre. London Mayor Boris Johnston launched the scheme and said London had been “filled with thousands of gleaming machines that will transform the look and feel of our streets and become as commonplace on our roads as black cabs and red buses”However, there have been a few problems since the scheme was launched last Friday. On the first day some people found they couldnt dock their bikes properly and that their usage of the bikes had not been registered.Transport for London did admit they had been expecting a few “teething problems” and said they wouldnt charge for the first day as a “gesture of goodwill”Some other people have criticized the lack of docking stations and locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles. Despite the comments, the greenthinking London Mayor still seems very positive about things, saying,“My campaign for the capital to become the greatest big cycling city in the world has taken a big pedalpowered push forwards.”28London Mayor Boris Johnston launched the new bike hire scheme in order to _.Areduce the air pollution of the city Bdeal with the citys traffic problemsCincrease employment opportunities Dencourage the citizens to take exercise29If you want to hire a bike,in which order will you do?Apay for the key to a bike Bsign up as a member to get a keyCcycle in and around central London Dpay according to the time you use the bikeAbacd BbdcaCdcba Ddbca30All the following are the problems of the scheme EXCEPT _.Athe high cost to hire a bike Bdocking the bikes properlyCnot registering their usage of the bikes Dnot charging for the first day of the scheme31From the passage,we can infer that _.Athe cycling revolution is not successful Ball the citizens in London support the schemeCthe London Mayor is confident of the scheme Dthe scheme will be canceled because of the problemsDA recent study, while showing a generally positive attitude toward science, also suggests a widespread worry that it may be “running out of control” . This idea is dangerous. Science can be a force for evil as well as for good. Its applications can be channeled either way, depending on our decisions. The decisions we make, personally or collectively, will determine the outcomes of science. But here is a real danger.Science is advancing so fast and is so strongly influenced by businesses that we are likely to believe whatever decisions we come to will make little difference. And,rather than fighting for the best possible policies,we may step back and do nothing. Some people go even further. They say that despite the moral and legal objections, whatever is scientifically possible will be donesomewhere, sometime. They believe that science will get out of control in the end. This belief is dangerous too, because it fuels a sense of hopelessness and discourages them from making efforts to build a safer world. In our interconnected world, the lack of agreement in and out of the world of science can lead to the failure to control the use of science. Without a common understanding, the challenges of “controlling” science in this century will be really tough. Take human cloning for example. Despite the general agreement among scientists on its possible huge impact(影响) on traditional moral values, some countries still go ahead with the research and development of its related techniques. The outcomes are hard to predict. Therefore, discussions on how science is applied should be extended far beyond scientific societies. Only through the united efforts of people with hope, can we be fully safe against the misuse of science and can science best serve mankind in the future.32What can we conclude from the recent study?APeople think highly of science.BPeople hold mixed opinions about science.CScience is getting dangerously out of control.DScience is used for both good and bad purposes.33According to the passage, what will happen if we hold that science is getting beyond control?AThe development of science will hopelessly slow down.BBusinesses will have an even greater influence on science.CThe public will lose faith in bringing about a bright future.DPeople will work more actively to put science under control.34The discussion should reach beyond scientific societies because _.Ascientists have failed to predict the outcomesBthe ties between different areas need strengtheningCunited efforts are necessary for the development of scienceDpeople need to work together to prevent the bad use of science35What is the main idea of the passage?AScience and its applications bring us many dangers.BThe development of science mostly lies in peoples attitudes.CMankind can largely take control of science with their efforts.DThe future of science will be influenced by the dangerous ideas. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The relationship between parents and teachers is important in the development of a child.
