(606)668-6222 C One day, when I was working as a psychologist in England, an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. “This boy has lost his family, he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and Im very worried about him. Can you help?” I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesnt have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically. The first two times we met, David didnt say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the childrens drawings on the wall behind me. l suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoonin plete silence and without looking at me. Its not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice. Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my pany. But why did he never look at me? “Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly. Its your turn, he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life. Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one without any wordscan reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.8.When he first met the author, David_.A.felt a little excited.B.walked energetically.C.looked a little nervous.D.showed up with his teacher.9.As a psychologist, the author_.A.was ready to listen to David.B.was skeptical about psychology.C.was able to describe Davids problem.D.was sure of handling Davids problem.10.David enjoyed being with the author because he_.A.wanted to ask the author for advice.B.needed to share sorrow with the author.C.liked the childrens drawings in the office.D.beat the author many times in the chess game.11.What can be inferred about David?A.He recovered after months of treatment.B.He liked biking before he lost his family.C.He went into university soon after starting to talk.D.He got friends in school before he met the author. D Two studies show that fatness and alcohol(酒精) act together to increase the risk of illness in both men and women. In the first study, researchers examined the connection between body mass index (BMI) and liver cirrhosis(肝硬化) in 1.2 million middle-aged women. Each woman was followed for 6.2 years. pared to the women of a healthy weight, the women who were overweight had an increased risk of liver cirrhosis. And through the study we can see that alcohol is dangerous for peoples health. For example, among the women who were reported drinking about a third to half a drink a day,0.8 in 1,000 would go to the hospital with liver cirrhosis or would die from liver cirrhosis over five years if they were of healthy weight pared with 1 in 1,000 women who were overweight. However, among the women who were reported drinking two and a half drinks a day ,2.7 in 1,000 would go to the hospital with liver cirrhosis or would succumb to liver cirrhosis over five years if they were of healthy weight pared with 5 in 1,000 women who were overweight. In the second study, researchers surveyed the influence of BMI and drinking on the body in more than 9,000 men. They were followed for 29 years. Both BMI and drinking were connected with liver disease and, more importantly, if they worked together, the influence was greater than that of BMI or drinking alone. For example, overweight men who were reported drinking 15 or more units per week had the greatest risk of liver disease. Both studies show that, from a public health view, methods to reduce both excessive (过度的) drinking and excessive body weight should reduce the chance of liver disease.12.What did the researchers mainly focus on in the first study?A.The connection between fatness and drinking.B.The influence of BMI and drinking on the body.C.The connection between BMI and liver cirrhosis.D.The reason why women are easy to get overweight.13.The underlined phrase “succumb to” in Paragraph 4 most probably means .A.stand forB.die ofC.get overD.change into14.It can be inferred from the passage that .A.improving body mass index is very difficult.B.the two studies arrived at different conclusions.C.it took researchers a long time to do the two studies.D.drinking alcohol leads to fatness in both men and women.15.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?A.The Influence of Excessive Drinking on Our Health.B.The Connection Between Fatness and Liver Cirrhosis.C.The Normal Amount of Drinking Each Day for Adults.D.The Increase in the Risk of Illness Caused by Fatness and Alcohol.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Since the day of its birth, the United Nations has been the subject of much debate. 16 Others think that it is too weak. We can better understand this debate if we learn more about the U.N. and its history. The U.N. was started for two reasons. First, when the idea was born, people all over the world were tired of war. They felt that there must be peaceful answers to the worlds problems. 17 The second reason was that modern science had developed new bombs and airplanes. 18 National borders were beginning to lose their meaning. Science would develop even more dangerous weapons in the future. Only an international organization would be able to control modern science. Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. President at the time, believed that the Allies (联盟) should plan for peace before the war ended. On December 1, 1943, Roosevelt, Britains Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin from Soviet Union agreed to start an organization for world peace. 19 During the next year and a half, the idea of such an organisation was debated around the world. Then came the big day. On April 11, 1945, the first international meeting of the United Nations took place in San Francisco. The goal of the meeting was to write the U.N. Charter (宪章). All of the fifty-one nations at the meeting had their own ideas to offer for the Charter. 20 Every nation present voted for the Charter. No one voted against it. A. The U.N.Charter is a beautiful piece of writing. B. After a long debate, a final Charter was agreed upon. C. Even the smallest country on earth can have its voice heard. D. They asked all countries, large and small, to join the organization. E. These weapons made it almost impossible for a country to defend itself. F. Some people attack the organization because they think it is too powerful.G. They also felt that only an international organization could keep world peace.语言知识运用 (共两节,满分45分)第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面的短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。A Wele Gift Dario and his mother loved their new apartment.
