After pleting his education at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst in England in 1826, Grey went to Ireland with the army. He felt sorry for the Irish people and thought it would improve their lives if they moved to Australia. In 1836 he planned to lead an expedition (远征队) to look for land for a settlement (定居点) in northwest Australia. He left England on the Beagle in July 1837. In Cape Town he took another ship, the Lynher, and sailed to the north coast of Western Australia. After landing near Collier Bay his group walked inland. Grey and his men were totally inexperienced and lacked survival skills. The local people were hostile and Grey was injured. It took two weeks before he was well enough to travel. They discovered and named the Glenelg River, Stephen Range and Mount Lyell. The land was not suitable for settlement, so in April they sailed to the island country Mauritius to get some rest.Grey returned to Australia, and in February 1839 he sailed from Perth to Shark Bay, Western Australia. His team landed with three whaleboats to go northwards. They lost their food when one whaleboat was damaged in a strong storm. They finally reached Shark Bay. They set sail back to Perth but both boats were damaged. After making it to shore with very little food, they began walking to Perth, 483 kilometres away. It was hard going in the heat with very little food and water. His men were badly weakened and one died. Grey pushed on ahead and arrived in Perth on 21 April. His men arrived later. Today Im a professional hang-glide instructor, but at the time I was one of only about a dozen in the country doing it. I was lucky to survive: the sport was so new and dangerous then. In 1997 I heard about the Birdman petition, in which participants(参与者) pete to fly the furthest distance; I thought it sounded like fun. I felt that a hang-glider, which usually travels around 90 metres, could go as far as 100 metres one day. The first leap was frightening: a huge crosswind meant I had to take off at almost 90 degrees and it was difficult to manage. But I came back, and now participate in the various Birdman petitions that take place across the country, attracting serious and silly petitors alike .Its taken 17 years to break the 100 metre barrier, and I was the first to do it. When I broke the world record in xx, I took off from Worthing pier(码头) and didnt touch down for 20 seconds. It was the longest ever flight from a pier, carrying me 159.8 metres until I touched the water. Twenty seconds is a long time when youre doing 45 miles an hour, flying over the waves. Though I still hold the distance record, I didnt Win the xx Birdman petition. This past year has been more difficult. Im nearly 60 now. petitors have always joked about how theyll probably be throwing me off the pier. I had operations on my knees, and then three weeks before this years petition at Bognor Regis, I had a mild heart attack. I managed to pete again, but I didnt feel right. My wife was obviously very concerned, but I keep fit. As long as I dont overwork myself; and prepare properly for the event, theres no reason I cant do it for the next 12, 13 years. And yet in this modern world, too many of us spend our days with our heads lowered for a simple reason: were staring at the tiny screen of a smart phone.People spend an average of 2 to 4 hours each day with their neck bent while shooting off emails or texts. Thats 700 to 1,400 hours a year. The success of social media has led to a rapid development of bad smart phone posture(姿势). The average adult head weighs 10 to 12 pounds when its in the upright position. However, because of the gravity, bending your head at a mere 15 degree puts 27 pounds of pressure on your spine(脊椎);a 30 degree neck bend could equal 40 pounds of pressure; a 45 degree bend adds the force of 49 pounds, according to the research from Dr. Kenneth Hansraj from New York. These stresses may lead to many problems. Its no secret that correct posture is better for your back. According to the researchers, good posture is described as ears aligned(成一条直线) with the shoulders. In proper alignment, spinal stress disappeared. It is the best position for the spine. Standing tall doesnt just make you look better; it improves your health, too. Other studies have found good posture has even been connected to ways of behaving. People who have poorer posture often have poorer physical and emotional health. The researchers describe bad posture as “the head in a forward position and the shoulders dropping forward in a rounded position”. Bad posture has been connected to many medical problems, including headaches and other problems, depression and heart disease. This is why Hansraj said its important to be mindful of your smart phone posture. Though it is nearly impossible to avoid the technologies that cause these problems, people should make an effort to look at their phones with a correct posture.33.
