Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. It is larger than the USA and reaches nearly a quarter of the way round the earth. The distance from east to west is over 5,500 kilometres and the country covers six of the worlds 24 time zones. However, its population, about 33.8 million, is only about onefifth of Russias.Nearly 90% of Canadians live within 200 km of the border with the United States, which means that Canada contains vast expanses (宽阔的区域) of wilderness to the north. Canadas native peoples make up less than two percent of the population. The weather is different from area to area. In the north, the winters are long and hard, with snow for six months of the year. The temperature can fall to 60 . The west coast of Canada is the warmest place in winter. The average January temperature is 3 , and in July it is 18 . Here it rains a lot every month of the year. Plants grow well all the year round and the parks and gardens are famous for their flowers.Canada has one third of the worlds supply of fresh water. There are five great lakes in the south, and there are many others, especially in the north. Most of the electricity is produced by water. The country hasa great deal ofcoal, oil and natural gas, and these are all exploited(开发) for energy.2019-2020年人教版高中英语必修三教学案:Unit 5 Section 1(含答案)原文呈现读文清障A TRIP ON “THE TRUE NORTH”Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian were on a trip to Canada to visit their cousins in Montreal on the Atlantic coast. Rather than take the aeroplane all the way, they decided to fly to Vancouver and then take the train from west to east across Canada. The thought that they could cross the whole continent was exciting.Their friend, Danny Lin, was waiting at the airport. He was going to take them and their baggage to catch “The True North”, the crossCanada train. On the way to the station, he chatted about their trip. “Youre going to see some great scenery. Going eastward, youll pass mountains and thousands of lakes and forests, as well as wide rivers and large cities. Some people have the idea that you can cross Canada in less than five days, but they forget the fact that Canada is 5,500 kilometres from coast to coast. Here in Vancouver, youre in Canadas warmest part. People say it is Canadas most beautiful city, surrounded by mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Skiing in the Rocky Mountains and sailing in the harbour make Vancouver one of Canadas most popular cities to live in. Its population is increasing rapidly. The coast north of Vancouver has some of the oldest and most beautiful forests in the world. It is so wet there that the trees are extremely tall, some measuring over 90 metres.”THE TRUE NORTH有两个含义:一是它的本义“真正的北方”,即加拿大是地球上最北端的国家之一;二是指横贯加拿大东西部的一列火车的名字。be on a trip to去某地旅行(表状态)go on a trip to去某地旅行(表动作)on the Atlantic coast在大西洋海岸上rather than与其;不愿连接两个并列成分;rather than位于句首时,其后跟不带to的不定式。 continent/kntInnt/n.洲;大陆baggage/bId/n.行李luggage n行李“一件行李”用a piece of baggage/luggage表示。chat/tt/vi.&n.聊天;闲聊chat with sb.(have a chat with sb.)与某人聊天scenery/sinrI/n. eastward/istwd/adv.向东adj.向东的;朝东的eastward也作eastwards,注意不能说go to eastward。surround/srand/vt.包围;围绕be surrounded by被包围/围绕过去分词短语surrounded by . harbour/hb/n.(harbor)海港in the harbour在海港one of Canadas most popular cities to live in加拿大最受欢迎的居住城市之一,作宾语补足语。此处to live in作定语,修饰cities。measure/me/v. It is so . that ., some measuring .是主从复合句,so . that“如此以至于”,引导结果状语从句;some measuring . That afternoon aboard the train, the cousins settled down in their seats. They went through a wheatgrowing province and saw farms that covered thousands of acres. After dinner, they were back in an urban area, the busy port city of Thunder Bay at the top of the Great Lakes. The girls were surprised at the fact that ocean ships can sail up the Great Lakes. I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So, naturally I wanted to take a trip to Canada.Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, is a fourhour drive from my home in New Hampshire. We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations. After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous St Catherines Street. Last year it broke the record for the most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁). It is delicious. However, we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest Frenchspeaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speak English, plenty of people were there to help.We spent the rest of the weekend going to many historical churches and monuments in Montreal. In the north the Inuit lived by hunting seals, walruses (海象) and whales. They also hunted caribou On the west coast people hunted deer, bear and beaver (河狸). They also fished. Later the Vikings did establish a colony (殖民地) in North America but they abandoned it because of conflict with the natives. However after the Vikings Canada was forgotten until the end of the 15th century. Cabot discovered rich fishing waters off the coast of Canada. Then in 1534 and in 153536 a Frenchman named Jacques Cartier (14911557) sailed on two expeditions to Canada. On 10 August 1535 (St Lawrences Day) he sailed into the St Lawrence River, which he named after the saint. However no permanent European settlements were made in Canada until the early 17th century. In 1603 a Frenchman named Samuel de Champlain (15671635) sailed up the St Lawrence River. In 1604 he founded Port Royal in Acadia (Nova Scotia). In 1608 Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec. (The name Quebec is believed to be an Algonquin word meaning a narrow part of a river). In 1642 the French founded Montreal. The new colony in Canada was called New France.
