Those who love it sometimes give the impression that it is an satisfactory substitute for food, shelter, and love. It isnt. Words, no matter how satisfying, are never an equivalent for life itself and human experiences. Those who dislike poetry sometimes say, on the other hand, that poetry is only words and good for nothing. Thats not true, either. It is easy to bee confused by words in poetry or in life but when words represent and recreate true human feelings, as they often do in poetry, they can be very important. Poetry is, in fact, more than just words. It is an experience of words, and those who know how to read poetry can easily extend their experience of life, their senses of what other people are like, their awareness of themselves, and their range of human feelings. One reason poetry can be so important is that it is so closely concerned with feelings. Poetry is often full of ideas, too, and sometimes poems can be powerful experiences of the mind, but most poems are primarily about how people feel rather than how people think. Poems provide, in fact, a language for feeling, and one of poetrys most insistent merits involves its attempt to express the inexpressible. How can anyone, for example, put into words what it means to be in love or what it feels like to lose someone one cares about? Poetry tries, and it often captures exactly the shade of emotion that feels just right to a reader. No single poem can be said to express all the things that love or death feels like, or means, but one of the joys of experiencing poetry occurs when we read a poem and want to say, “Yes, that is just what it is like. I know exactly what that line means but Ive never been able to express it so well.” Poetry can be the voice of our feelings even when our minds are speechless with grief or joy.1. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 means that_.Afew people think that poetry is neutralB. people always have same views about poetryC. people rarely take an opinion about poetryD. people generally think of poetry as extremely important or totally useless答案与解析D作者在第一段中说明人们对待诗的两种极端态度:一是诗是物质生活的替代品;二是诗是语言,毫无价值。2According to the author, poetry is_.Amore than just wordsB. the readers opinions about wordsC. anything but patterns of linesD. an experiment on the uses of words答案与解析A第二段的第一句明确表明了作者对待诗的态度。3Poetry tries to express_.Awhat love and death meanB. what people think about themselvesC. what people feel but find it hard to describeD. how people go through life答案与解析C从文章第二段后半部分可知,诗歌表达的是inexpressible“难以形容的”感情。4The second paragraph mainly deals with_.Aa poems emotional attractionB. the diction (措辞) of a poemC. the foot of a poemD. the rhythm of a poem答案与解析AB、C、D三项是讲述poem的特点,而文中并没有提到。BTeaching PoetryNo poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting (背诵) it.I have e to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isnt time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “a heightening (提升) of life”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”. It also deserves (值得) a place in the teaching of languages and literature more central than it presently occupies.I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who dont like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential (基本的) nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.5. To have a better understanding of a poem, one should_.Adiscuss it with others B. analyze it by oneselfC. copy it down in a notebook D. practise reading it aloud答案与解析D从第一段“Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, .”看出练习朗诵诗歌是比较好的事情,符合D项所述,要进一步理解诗歌,一个人应该练习朗诵诗歌。6. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?AExtending your life. B. Saving your life.C. Criticizing life. D. Heightening life.答案与解析A在诗歌内涵的四个方面中,Poetry is “a criticism of life (对生活的批评)”, and “a heightening (提升) of life”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling (感觉真理的方法)”, and it “can save your life (拯救生命)”。不包括A项的内容“延长生命”。7. According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students_.Ato understand life B. to enjoy poetryC. to bee teachers D. to bee poets答案与解析B从第三段“I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry.”看出作为英语教师的目的之一是使得学生喜欢诗歌。符合B项的to enjoy poetry。8. What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply?AMore stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry.B. Poetry is more important than any other subject.C. One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry.D. Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses.答案与解析A从第三段“It also deserves (值得)a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.”看出诗歌在语言和文学教学中占有更重要的位置,符合A项的“要更加重视诗歌的教学”, stress“强调”。
