This is the first Nobel Prize given to a Chinese scientist for work carried out within China. Tu shared the prize with Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan, who were honored for their revolutionary anti-roundworm treatment. 84-year-old Tu is awarded this prize for her contribution to cutting the death rate of malaria, reducing patients suffering and promoting mankinds health. Although she received several medical awards in the past, the xx Nobel Prize is definitely the most privilege reward that recognizes Tus dedication and perseverance in discovering artemisinin(青蒿素), the key drug that battles malaria-friendly parasites(寄生虫). However, her route to the honor has been anything but traditional. She won the Nobel Prize for medicine, but she doesnt have a medical degree or a PhD. In China, she is even being called the “three-noes” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and shes never worked overseas. No wonder her success has stirred Chinas national pride and helped promote confidence of native Chinese scientists. The fact that Tu has none of these three backgrounds reminds us that science should be more accessible to all. One shall be able to bee a scientist no matter what kind of background he or she es from, as long as one dives into scientific research. There have been discussions on people who really love science but are never able to achieve much during their whole life. Their contributions can never be ignored. They work so hard to prove the wrong way so that the future researchers will be closer to the right one. As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award, Tus record-breaking winning also serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success. Science is never about instant success. Tu spent decades on scientific research before its value is officially acknowledged. There is no way to measure how much one devotes to science and pare it with how much reward he or she may get.21. It can be concluded from the text that _. A. Tu worked home and abroad to conduct her researchB. Tu got the Nobel Prize for her anti-roundworm treatment C. The Nobel Prize is the first award to recognize her work D. Her discovery of artemisinin has helped to cut Malaria death rate22. The author seems to agree that a person who is more likely to bee a scientist is the one with_. A. a sense of national pride B. relevant academic knowledge C. enthusiasm for scientific researchD. a desire to achieve success 23. In writing the passage, the author intends to _.A. remind readers of the principles of scientific researchB. discourage the pursuit of instant success in scienceC. inform readers of the news and make ments D. praise the award winner and encourage scientific research BI recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadnt been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him, and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania drivers license.“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Are you with the army?”“No, Im not.” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadnt had time to re-register yet.“So what brings you here?” He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “since youve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. Weve moved down here to be close to my wifes family.”“So youve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.”He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or hes telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest. “Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors(肿瘤)are on the inside.” And then, I dont know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars. He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasnt taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor.” he said, “Slow down from now on.”The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.24. The author was stopped by the police officer because _. A. he drove too fastB. he forgot to re-register C. he was seriously illD. he didnt have a license 25. The author moved to Virginia probably because _. A. he was homesickB. Virginia had better hospitalsC. he could spend more time with familiesD. he served in the army there 26. It can be inferred from the passage that the author was _. A. romantic B. adventurousC. dishonest D. optimisticCTime TravelIf you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeares play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe youd voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds. The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H.G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of ic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future. But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They proposeusing cracks in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einsteins theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And Britishphysicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task.Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being bornIf the time traveler wasnt born, how would he travel back in time? And would you really like to visit the future? In HGWells book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles(触角).If thats whats in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all. 28The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show_Athe special feature of the bookBPeoples interest in time travelCthe long history of time travel Dthe contribution of HGWells29Einsteins and Hawkings theories_Asuggest the possibility to invent the time machineBhave similarities in many ways Chave proved wrong by some time travelersDpush the invention of the first spaceship30In Paragraph 4,“grandfather paradox” probably refers to the idea that_Athe traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfatherBthe traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfatherCthe grandfathers death makes the travelers birth impossibleDThe reunion of the traveler and his grandfather brings happiness31According to the passage, what is probably the authors attitude towards time travel?ASupportiveBUnconcernedCUnclearDSkepticalDSince the beginning of time never has there been another with my mind, my heart, my eyes, my ears, my hands, my mouth. None that came before, none that live today, and none that e tomorrow can walk and talk and move and think exactly like me. Im a unique creature.Vain attempts to imitate others no longer will I make. Instead will I place my uniqueness on display in the market place. I will begin now to highlight my differences; hide my similarities. I am rare, and therefore I am valuable. I am the end product of thousands of years of evolution; therefore, I am better equipped in both mind and body than all the emperors and wise men before me.But my skills, my mind, my heart, and my body will weaken, rot, and die for fear that I put them to good use. I have unlimited potential. Only a tiny part of my brain do I employ; only a small amount of my muscle do I apply. So never again will I be satisfied with yesterdays acplishments nor will I lose myself, anymore, in self-praise for deeds which in reality are too small to even acknowledge. I can acplish far more than I have, and I will. I am not on this earth by chance. I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth(从今往后) will I apply all my efforts to bee the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy.I will increase my knowledge of mankind, myself, and the goods I sell. I will practice, and improve, and polish the words I speak to multiply my sales, for this is the foundation on which I will build my career. Also will I seek constantly to improve my manners and graces, for they are the sugar to which all are attracted.I have been given eyes to see and a mind to think and now I know a great secret of life that all my problems, discouragements, and heartaches are, in truth, great opportunities in disguise. I am natures greatest miracle. And nature knows not defeat. Eventually, she achieves victory and so will I, and with each victory the next struggle bees less difficult.32.
