I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the days events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isnt accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my penAt that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very oftenonly of objects I find really beautiful. Im no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.I dont want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I wont have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe Ill forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I dont live to make memoriesI just live, and the memories form themselves.56. What caused a change in the authors understanding of keeping a diary?A. A dull night on the journey. B. As countries bee richer, religion bees less central to peoples lives and they lose a sense of meaning in life.“Thus far, the wealth of nations has been almost always associated with longevity, health, happiness or life satisfaction,” explains psychological scientist Shigehiro Oishi of the University of Virginia. “Given that meaning in life is an important aspect of overall well-being, we wanted to look more carefully at differential patterns, correlates (相关物), and predictors for meaning in life.”Oishi and colleague Ed Diener of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign investigated life satisfaction, meaning, and well-being by examining data from the xx Gallup World Poll, a large-scale survey of over 140,000 participants from 132 countries. In addition to answering a basic life satisfaction question, participants were asked: “Do you feel your life has an important purpose or meaning?” and “Is religion an important part of your daily life?”The data revealed some unexpected trends:“Among Americans, those who are high in life satisfaction are also high in meaning in life,” says Oishi. “But when we looked at the societal level of analysis, we found a pletely different pattern of the association between meaning in life and life satisfaction.”When looking across many countries, Oishi and Diener found that people in wealthier nations were more educated, had fewer children, and expressed more individualistic attitudes pared to those in poorer countries all factors that were associated with higher life satisfaction but a significantly lower sense of meaning in life.”The data suggest that religiosity may play an important role: Residents of wealthier nations, where religiosity is lower, reported less meaning in life and had higher suicide rates than poorer countries.According to the researchers, religion may provide meaning to life to the extent that it helps people to overe personal difficulty and cope with the struggles of working to survive in poor economic conditions:“Religion gives a system that connects daily experiences with the coherent whole (连贯的整体) and a general structure to ones life and plays a critical role in constructing meaning out of extreme hardship,” the researchers write.Oishi and Diener hope to reproduce these findings using more prehensive measures of meaning and religiosity, and are interested in following countries over time to track whether economic prosperity gives rise to less religiosity and less meaning in life.59. Which of the following questions couldnt the participants have answered? A. Does your life have a purpose or meaning? B. Do you have relatives living abroad? C. Are you satisfied with your everyday life?D. Is religion involved in your daily life?60. Which of the following statements is true? A. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The poorer a country is, the more religious its people are. B. Economic prosperity gives rise to less religiosity and less meaning in life. C. If you want to find meaning in life, you must practice a religion. D. Meaning in life doesnt have much to do with the amount of wealth one possesses.62. The main purpose of the passage is to explain the possible reason why _. A. greater life satisfaction leads to lower sense of meaning B. residents of poorer nations enjoy greater meaning in life C. residents of poorer nations are so religiousD. residents of wealthy nations have greater life satisfactionCA baby mermaid (美人鱼) was just born in Finland; Justin Bieber is getting married; iPhone 6 is going to be released this year We read rumors every day on the Internet. With the help of social media, rumors no matter whether they are true or false spread like wildfire, and sometimes we cant be sure what to believe. Now, an international group of researchers might be able to make it easier for us. They are working on a lie detector that could separate online truth from lies, Discovery News reported. Named after the Greek goddess Pheme, famed for spreading bad rumors, the system is far from a traditional lie detector, which works by attaching a machine to a potential liar. Instead, Pheme analyzes the rumor directly. When a rumor es out, on a micro blog, for example, Pheme can trace the source of information to see if it was released by reliable sources like experts or news agencies. If it wasnt, Pheme then examines the history and background of the account to identify whether it was created just to spread rumors. After finding the source of the rumor, the system can keep a close eye on how other users react to the rumor either confirming or denying it to help analyze and further determine the reliability of the information. Some people might find the Pheme system unnecessary based on the idea that false rumors never survive for long and people always get to the truth over time. While thats a fair point, there is a certain class of rumors, such as “a tiger is at large” or “an asteroid (小行星) is about to hit the Earth”, that can cause panic among people and thus lead to serious consequences. These are cases when we need to be able to check for accuracy quickly. “Our system aims to help with that, by tracking and verifying (查证) information in real time,” a leading researcher Kalina Bontcheva, at the University of Sheffield, UK, told the BBC. According to Bontcheva, Pheme is still under development and wont be ready for another 18 months. Until then, theres an old-fashioned technique that you can use to protect yourself from false information ask questions, check sources and dont believe any claim until youve seen the evidence.63. What is the article mainly about?A. Tips on how to deal with rumors online.B. Factors that make rumors so easy to spread.C. A new device that can check whether online rumors are true or not.D. An introduction to some types of lie detectors.64. How does the Pheme system determine the reliability of a piece of information?A. Based on how the majority of people react to it.B. Based on the reliability of its sources and the history of its authors.C. By collecting and examining relevant information to further confirm it.D. By making use of an “Internet bot” to track and verify the information.65. Which of the following statements might the author agree with?A. The Pheme system is not very helpful because all rumors eventually die down.B. The Ph
