2019-2020年高二英语上学期第14周周考试题第一节:阅读理解(9*3=27分) A “I once hoped to afford a wonderful telescope, but now I wish my father would be back.” Lucy Lawrences letter to Father Christmas written after his father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart. Lucy went on to say that without his father he couldnt see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while. But Lucy, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone ,you will see them again . And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart . I find that my parents , long dead now , still occur in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive . I still live to please them and Im still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor , I was so proud , or rather so pleased with myself , that I couldnt wait to write to my parents . The reply was a long time in ing, but when it did, all Mother said was “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children! ” I havent forgotten. The values of my parents still live on. It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors, and to lay down my life for those in my care ? How many people would want me back for Christmas? Its a serious thought, one to give me pause. I pray silently , sometimes , in the dead of night ,that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword(剑), and my darling from the power of the evil .” Yet I know the death es to us all, and sometimes es suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, Im sure, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.1 According to the whole text we can see that the first paragraph .A. shows the authors pity on the kid B. acts as an introduction to the discussionC. puts forward the subject of the text D. makes a clear statement of the authors opinions2 In the second paragraph the author mainly wants to explain to us .A. why his parents often appear in his dream B. how much he misses his parents nowC. when Lucy will get over all his sadness D. how proud he was when he succeeded in life3 What feeling did the authors mother express in her reply?A. BIn my living room, there is a plaque (匾) that advises me to“Bloom (开花) where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy.I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s,when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville,Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program.Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who“bloomed”in her remote area.Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County,Kentucky,Appalachian Mountain area.To get to her school from the town of Harlan,I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eightmile journey,I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times.Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains,I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness. From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom (忧郁) disappeared.Upon arriving at Dorothys classroom.I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects.Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for“dinner”(lunch)In case you dont know, poke greens are a weedtype plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification,Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas.Afterward, she invited me to the oneandonly steak house in the area to celebrate her victory,as if she had received her Ph.D.degree.After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom (传家宝),but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.5“Early Childhood Development”in Paragraph 1 refers to_.Aa program directed by Dorothy Ba course given by the authorCan activity held by the students Dan organization sponsored by Union college6In the journey, the author was most disappointed at seeing_.Athe long track Bthe poor houses Cthe same train Dthe winding road7Upon arriving at the classroom, the author was cheered up by_.Aa warm wele Bthe sight of poke greensCDorothys latest projects Da big dinner made for her8What can we know about Dorothy from the last paragraph?AShe was invited to a celebration at a restaurant.
