It was not a gold medal, or a world record broken, but a show of pure courage and determination. The event was swimming. I watched a man dive off the blocks and knew right away that something was wrong. Im not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold - his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle.I heard the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes (划水) and you could tell he was worn out. But in those few awkward strokes, the crowd changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and yell things like, e on, you can do it! He did. The crowd went wild.Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to take part in the event. Even though he recorded the slowest time, this man gave more heart than any of the other petitors-a man that gave his all, knowing that he had no chance but to pete because of the spirit of the games.21We know from the passage that the swimmer .Ahad two petitors Bwas not professionalChad a wrong start Ddidnt try his best22What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?AThe audience was touched deeply by the swimmer.BThe swimmer didnt finish his match.CThe swimmer lost his spiritDThe crowd supported the swimmer from the beginning.23The authors attitude towards the swimmer is that of . But for me, whenever I do give money, thats just the wrapping (包装纸) . The real gift is hidden inside its love. And l havent ever found any reason to limit gifts of love.” By the end of the night, I decided to get some pizza. In front of me in line was a homeless-looking man. He was counting the few dollars bills in his hand, over and over again, until it was his turn to order. Just then, he told the young woman behind the counter, “Ill have the full cheese pizza.” “Full?” she asked. “Its really big.” she added, although what she really meant to say was that itd be too expensive for him. “Yeah, the full” “$18.65,” she submitted. The bills he was counting werent going to make it. I wasnt intending to get the whole pizza for him. But thinking back to my conversation with the business man, I realized that money was really just the wrapping. I made my move. “Can you charge that pizza with my order” I said to the cashier. “Really?” the homeless-looking man said. “Really?” the young woman behind the counter repeated. “Yes, really.” That confused man and I had a sweet silent moment. To his silent question of why I was doing it, I added, “Just pay it forward for someone else.” And he said, “Well, you know what? I was actually treating these five homeless guys out there.” He was actually paying it forward, in the first place. What an unexpected fortune to get a chance to be a part of a mans act of kindness.28. What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph?A. He believes its not money but love that matters B. A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age. Martin Doherty,a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment,Doherty and his team tested the perception(观察力)of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10,and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25. The first group of pictures showed two orange circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one. Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time. Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time. Next, both groups were shown pictures where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by grey circles. Heres where the trick lies. In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller grey circlesmaking the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger grey circlesso it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle. When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they werent fooledthey were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before. Older children and adults,on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one,and adults got it wrong most of the time. As children get older,Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once:the tricky grey circles,as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, theyre more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick. 32Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate_. A. children s and adults eye-sight B. peoples ability to see accurately C. children s and adults brains D. the influence of peoples age33When asked to find the larger circle,_. A. children at 6 got it wrong 79of the time with no grey ones around B. only adults over 18 got it right 95of the time with grey ones around C. children at 4 got it right about 79of the time with grey ones around D. adults got it right most of the time with grey ones around 34According to the passage,we can know that_. A. a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white background B. an orange circle appears bigger than a grey one of the same size C. a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real size D. a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size35Why are younger children not fooled? A. Because they are smarter than older children and adults. B. Because older people are influenced by their experience. C. Because peoples eyes bee weaker as they grow older. D. Because their brain can hardly notice related things together. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。HomeworkDo maths problems 15 through 25. State the different forms of the verbs on page 50 of your French workbook. Read pages 12 through 20 of the Shakespeare play, and dont forget to fill in the missing chemical symbols on the worksheet.Sound like a list of your homework for the next few nights or maybe even just for tonight? 36 Its your teachers way of evaluating how much you understand whats going on in class. And it helps strengthen important concepts. Here are some tips on how to do your homework.37 Its inviting to start with the easy things to get them out of the way. However, youll have the most energy and focus when you begin, so its best to use this mental power on the subjects that are most challenging. Later, when youre more tired, you can focus on the simpler things. If you get stuck on a problem, try to figure it out as well as you can but dont spend too much time on it because this can mess up your homework schedule for the rest of the night. 38 But dont pick someone whom youll be up all night chatting with, or youll never get it done! Most peoples attention spans arent very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.39 Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time. Be sure to put it safely away in your backpack theres nothing worse than having a pleted assignment that you cant find the next morning or that gets ruined by a careless brother or sister. 40 Now youre free to hang out. A. Luckily, you can do a few things to do less homework. B. Homework is a major part of going to school. C. No one is expected to stay long, and people have very different learning styles. D. If you need to, ask an adult for help or call or email a classmate for advice. E. But if youre really concentrating, wait until its a good time to stop. F. And no teacher still believes that “chewed by the dog” line even when its true! G. When you start your homework, deal with the hardest tasks first. There is a big hospital across the street from where we live.
