Located by the River Seine, on an avenue named after its designer, this 300-meter tower is the most famous edifice(宏伟建筑)in the city of Paris. Gustave Eiffels idea was certainly chosen from among 700 proposals(提议)to represent the city in the International Exhibition of Paris in 1889. It memorated(纪念)the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. In 1887, three hundred steel workers spent two years constructing the 7, 000-ton tower. Yet, it was almost torn down two decades after its pletion. Luckily, its antenna(天线), used for telegraphy at the time, saved it. Last July, it looked to observers as though the tower might be destroyed after all, as ominous(不吉利的)black clouds of smoke encircled the structure. Luck was again smiling upon the tower: the fire turned out to be a small one that was quickly put out by attendants on duty. To date, more than 200 million people have visited the Eiffel Tower. However, it has not always been a beloved tourist attraction. At first, Parisians despised it. Its architectural style and metallic position were not considered pleasing. Today, the Eiffel Tower is adorned(装饰)with special lights that sparkle for ten minutes each hour, from sunset until one a. m. . And you wont have to wander far from home to enjoy one of these national treasures, with Michigans Isle Royal National Park nearby. Located 56 miles from Copper Harbor on Michigans Upper Peninsula, the park remains a desolate area that can only be reached by tour boat. With the exception of the Rock Harbor Lodge, which offers both rooms with private baths and acmodations in the form of small cottages, the 572, 000 acres that make up the 45-mile-long park are rough, threaded with hiking paths that lead to tentsonly campsites. You are likely to see a deer crossing mist-covered ponds in search of breakfast, gaze bald eagles flying overhead, or hear a beaver(河狸)clapping its tail on the water. If you are especially lucky, you might even glimpse a grey wolf, nearly dying out from hunting on the mainland. Plenty of hiking paths open the area to exploration. The 4-mile Stroll Path winds through various trees and offers a tour of the islands history, including prehistoric Indian mines. The Jungle Path leads to Scoville Pointa perfect picnic spot surrounded on three sides by the shining waters of Lake Superior. You can also rent a boat at the parks service center and row down the shore to the Rock Harbor Lighthouse. Here parks service employees use nets to show how lake fishes used to be caught by the original local people. Their catch ends up on the dinner menu at the Rock Harbor Lodge. I mean, what sort of moron would take a perfectly good, perfectly famous bridge and move it halfway around the world to some no-name town in northwest Arizona? Back in 1962 when all this started, Lake Havasu City was nothing. A couple of shops, a couple of homes, and no tourism at all. It turns out Robert McCulloch is the moron in question, and he wasnt quite the moron I thought he was. His 2. 45 million dollar investment in the 130-year-old bridgewhich the British government was selling because it was about to fall into the Thamesended up being the investment of a lifetime. You see McCulloch was a real businessman, among other things, and his money paid off big. He turned Lake Havasu into one of the most visited tourist attractions in Arizona. It took nine long years to take down the bridge, ship it brick by brick to the middle of nowhere, and build it up again. When it finally did open up in 1971, it was a huge deal covered by the international press. The bridge is now a popular tourist attraction, and theres even a mini “English Village” at the foot of the bridge with souvenirs and real British food so you can have a good old time. Nowadays Lake Havasu is a busy town with a population of about 56, 000 citizens and another 2. 5 million visitors each year. Most of that is during spring break when the town overflows with energetic boys and girls. Even MTV and the Girls Gone Wild people get in on the action. All thanks to that little bridge. I dont know about you, but Im saving my pennies. When the French get sick of that Eiffel Tower, Ill be the first to put money on it. Itll look great in my backyard. 【语篇概述】本文讲述了伦敦塔桥因为快要倒塌而被公开售卖的故事。28. It would be easy to think our obsession with documenting everything takes away from the enjoyment of the experience itself, but a new study says otherwise. Researchers have found people taking photos of events actually enjoy them more. The study was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The participants who took photos reported being more engaged in the activity. Photo taking helps this because it naturally draws people more into the experience, they said. The researchers asked over 2, 000 people to take part in nine different experiments. In each experiment, individuals were asked to participate in an activitywhich ranged from going on a bus tour to eating in a food court. They were asked to either take photos or not, and pleted a survey to show how much fun they had during the task. In almost every case, people who took photographs reported higher levels of enjoyment. But the same effect happened in the other extreme, in that photo taking can make an unpleasant experience even worse, the study found. In one instance, participants went on a virtual trip and observed a crowd of lions attacking a water buffalo(水牛), which most people did not enjoy. In that case, the photo takers enjoyed it less than those who saw the same encounter but did not take photos. The researchers also discovered that this effect is not limited to the action of taking pictures. Participants in one experiment reported higher levels of enjoyment after just taking “mental” pictures as they were going through the experience. This shows it is the process of taking the photo itself that helps increase enjoyment. This means cameras that record any moment of an experience without the individuals active decision of what to capture are unlikely to have the same effect, according to the researchers. 【语篇概述】使用手机拍照然后分享照片真的会让人获得更多乐趣吗? 32.
