The book consists of 23 chapters with thousands of stories made up of paragraphs, words and letters on different levels. There are one billion words in the book, which makes it longer than 5, 000 volumes the size of this book, or as long as 800 Bibles. If I read the genome out to you at the rate of one word per second for eight hours a day, it would take me a century. If I wrote out the human genome, one letter per millimeter, my text would be as long as the Danube River. This is an enormous document, a huge volume, a cook book of great length, and it all fits inside the extremely small nucleus (核) of a tiny cell that fits easily upon the head of a pin.The idea of the genome as a book is not, strictly speaking, even a metaphor(比喻). It is true to a great extent. A book is a piece of digital information, written in onedirectional form and defined by a code that translates a small alphabet of signs into a large dictionary of meanings through the order of their groupings. So is a genome. The only complication is that all English books read from left to right while some parts of the genome read from left to right, and some from right to left, though never both at the same time. While English books are written in words of different lengths using twentysix letters, genomes are written entirely in threeletter words, using only four letters. And instead of being written on flat pages, they are written on long chains of DNA molecules(分子). The genome is a very clever book, because in the right conditions it can both photocopy itself and read itself. 21. How do human genomes read according to the passage?A. Only from left to right.B. Only from right to left.C. From both directions at the same time.D. From one direction at a time. 从第二段最后一句话“The only complication is that all English books read from left to right while some parts of the genome read from left to right, and some from right to left, though never both at the same time.” 22. We can learn from the passage that the human genome_.A. is as long as the Danube RiverB. can be easily placed on the head of a pinC. is coded with an alphabet of four lettersD. is smart enough to read and take photos of itself答案:C细节理解题。从最后一段第一句话“While English books are written in words of different lengths using twentysix letters, genomes are written entirely in threeletter words, using only four letters.” 23. It can be concluded that the passage is mainly written for _.A. specialists in the fieldB. general readersC. natural scientistsD. readers with academic backgrounds答案:B推理判断题。 24. The real purpose of the authors comparison of the genome to a book is _. A. to focus on the differences between the two B. to lay emphasis on the similarities between the two C. to simplify the concept of the human genome D. to give an exact description of the human genome答案:C推理判断题。 The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aidwe simply weigh too much, and all our mass pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink. However, several types of animals can walk on water. One of the most interesting is the common basilisk Basilicus basilicus, a lizard (蜥蜴) native to Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the waters surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. For humans to do this, wed need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate “hitting”But fortunately there is an alternative: cornflour. By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water (and it does take a lot), you can create a “nonNewtonian” liquid that doesnt behave like normal water. Now, if the surface of the water is hit hard enough, particles (粒子) in the water group together for a moment to make the surface hard. Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick liquid of cornflour.Fun though all this may sound, its still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. If you must do it, then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sinkand take a shower afterward! 25. Walking on water hasnt become a reality mainly because humans_. A. are not interested in it B. have biological limitations C. have not invented proper tools D. are afraid to make an attempt答案:B细节理解题。根据第一段的Sadly, biological facts prevent us. 26. What do we know about Basilicus basilicus from the passage? A. It is light enough to walk on water. B. Its huge feet enable it to stay above water. C. It can run across water at a certain speed. D. Its unique skin keeps it from getting wet in water. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. 27. What is the function of the cornflour according to the passage? A. To create a thick liquid. B. To turn the water into solid. C. To help the liquid behave normally. D. To enable the water to move rapidly. 根据第三段的最后一句话中的the surface of an adequately thick liquid of cornflour可知,cornflour的作用就是创造出一种足够厚的液面让我们能够在上面行走,所以答案为A项。28. What is the authors attitude toward the idea of humans walking on water? A. It is risky but beneficial. B. It is interesting and worth trying. C. It is crazy and cannot become a reality. D. It is impractical though theoretically possible. CHow to Make the Most of Your TimeTime management is important in our daily life. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to accomplish all you need to do. Here are some tips that might be of some help to you.1. Set up a plan. Go through a week at a time, and prioritize the things you want to accomplish. Focus mostly on the things that are important to you.2. Control your stress. No matter what kind of pressure mounts on you, try to keep cool. Stressing out can lead to an early breakdown, which is definitely counterproductive when you have a list of things to do. Its easier to take a 10minute break and cool off than work all week with stress.3. Shut your door. When working under a schedule, perform your important tasks with your door shut to get them done. This will ensure the time of a higher quality to get what needs to be done.4. Focus on one thing at a time. Forget trying to multitask! You will lose concentration, and it will take you longer to accomplish what you set out to do.5. Just say “no”. If you are constantly interrupted, and you really dont have the time to help out, just say “no”. Youre only one person, and you can t save the world by yourself!6. Stop wasting time on the phone. While talking on the phone, keep your conversations short and to the point, and youll waste much less time.7. Be realistic. You can only do what you can do. Dont set out to accomplish the impossible. Do your best, but keep realistic expectations of yourself.8. Relax. The most important thing is to remember to take time to relax, and regroup. You need a break every now and then to keep working efficiently. Even if its a 10minute walk, get away from your list and get refreshed. As people today get busier and busier, its important for your own mental health to keep things on track. Dont delay; get your life in order now. 29. What does the underlined word “prioritize” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Choose something by thinking carefully.B. Recognize the difference between things.C. Put many things in order of importance.D. It is wise to be aware of what we can achieve. 32. By writing the text, the author would like to_.A. ask readers to share their time management skillsB. offer some advice on how to make full use of timeC. invite readers to discuss how to improve life qualityD. persuade readers to spend less time on daily routine答案:B意图推断题。 DA private group of scientists has announced plans to make an exact copy of a human being. An American member of the team says he and the others will soon begin a serious effort to clone humans. Panos Zavos says the team hopes to manufacture the worlds first cloned baby within the next two years. In recent years, scientists have produced exact genetic copies of sheep and a few other animals. They created these clones from a single cell of an adult animal.Three years ago, another American doctor, Richard Seed, announced plans to clone a human being. However, there is no evidence that he has been successful.Doctor Zavos says the new international group plans to offer human cloning only to women who are currently not able to become pregnant or produce children. He says the aim is to assist people who want to have their own biological child. The technology would be similar to that used to clone animals. It would involve cleaning genetic material from a womans egg. Doctors then would place genetic material from the womans husband into the egg before putting it into the womans uterus(子宫)Doctor Zavos says his group plans to do the work in a country near the Mediterranean Sea. He did not name the country. He says an Italian reproductive expert, Sevorino Antinori, is leading the team. Doctor Antinori has led the efforts to help many older women become pregnant. He is known for establishing pregnancies in women as old as sixty. Many medical experts and other groups are opposed to the idea of cloning humans. Several countries ban or restrict work on human cloning. Several doctors criticize the announcement by Doctor Zavos. They say doctors do not know if cloning humans is possible or safe. They say it would be irresponsible to attempt to clone a human being. That is because the chances of success are too small and the risks are too great. 33.
