That would have been, Kane, a boy. Kane was the two-year-old son of Jolene, my new neighbor. At a glance Kane was a sight. Hed been born with hard sticks for legs. And on that morning l witnessed the effect that Kanes physical shortcomings had on his family. But I also witnessed much more than that. I saw an extraordinary family that embraced this special child, a family that wouldnt allow Kane to know he was different. Jolene had constructed a small cart just a few inches off the floor for his son to get around. Using his hands to move, Kane moved the cart to go to any place just as everyone else was able to do. Kane worked that little cart like a master. Kane was a vital focus of the entire family. He was more than just a member of the family; he was the soul. This child was the driver, the motivator, and the founder of much of the interaction. Much later in my life, I came to realize that God had sent this child to help some of us who just werent getting what love was all about. Even with my limited capacity for understanding at the time that Kane was a highly-developed spirit with great wisdom. Kane demanded attention, but not because of his mobility challenges or other apparent shortcomings. In his mind, he had no challenges or shortcomings. The truth is that he received attention because he was alive and real and had so much to offer. Kane was and still is a lot of warm and powerful energy sent to us all, so we might learn that love is beyond all things. Kane, a fragile yet lovely baby, was here to teach us all an important lesson. And at the age of two he did just that. 21. How did the author think of Kanes family members? A. It was ridiculous for them to make a cart for Kane. B. They were greatly brave to face all the difficulties. C. They were strange because they locked Kane at home. D. It was respectable for them to start their own business. 22. How did Kane go to everywhere he wanted to go? A. By moving his cart with his own hands. B. By asking his father to lead him ahead with a stick. C. By asking his grandparents to push him everywhere. D. With the help of a babysitter employed for him. 23. Kane needed attention because he wanted to show A. he could challenge his difficulties in moving. B. he had challenges or shortcomings in his life. C. he had the power to prove he was capable too. D. he himself needed to be looked after by others. 24. What can we learn from Kanes story? A. Love me, love my dog. B. Pure gold fears no fire. C. Love is above all things. D. Many hands make light work. B Name: Off the Beaten Path Cover price: $ 30. 00 Our price: $ 19. 80 The Readers Digest travel book has 40% new contents including over 200 new sites! With 1 minute and 42 seconds left in the game, Deborahs team led by one point. A player of Mills had possession of the ball, and Deborah ran to guard against her. As Deborah was running to block the player, her knee went out and she fell down on the court in burning pain. Just like that, Deborahs season was over. After suffering the bad injury, Deborah found that, for the first time in her life, she was in a situation beyond her control. Game after game, she could do nothing but sit on the sidelines watching others play the game that she loved so much. Injuries limited Deborahs time on the court as she hurt her knees three more times in the next five years. She had to spend countless hours in a physical clinic to receive treatment. Her frequent visits there gave her a passion and respect for the profession. And Deborah began to see a new light in her life. Currently as a senior in college, Deborah focuses on getting a degree in physical treatment. After she graduates, Deborah plans to use her knowledge to educate people how to best take care of their bodies and cope with the feelings of hopelessness that she remembers so well. 28. D High heels, coffee cups and dogs have been regarded as three of the most dangerous things to have in a car. While men were responsible for the greater number of accidents reported, women played their part by driving in high heels. Putting fashion over function meant 44 percent of female motorists had been prevented from using the pedals correctly by their high heels. Being keen on a caffeine kick while driving can also create an accident if they leave empty coffee cups lying around their vehicles. Twenty percent of those surveyed admitted they had crashed their cars or had a near miss after a deserted coffee cup or an empty drink bottle rolled under their brake pedals. However, it is not just wearing and eating that cause a threat from inside the car: mans best friend could also cause a catastrophe if not safely secured. One in eight motorists claimed to have had a scrape(擦伤) or miss on the road due to their dogs wandering freely, climbing into the front seat or trying to escape through the windows. The accidents meant drivers took their eyes off the road for more than three seconds each time, according to the poll of 2,000 British motorists. The survey has found drivers will pick up an average bill of261.47 for the damage caused by every crash. Londoners were the most at risk of an accident closely followed by motorists in the West Midlands and Wales. Janet Connor, a managing director, said many accidents could be avoided if people cleaned their cars regularly, as one in ten drivers involved in crashes admitted to driving inside a mountain of waste materials. She said, The possible dangers and distractions outside the car are well-known but as the evidence suggests, those within the car are often forgotten. 32. What mistake do women drivers most probably make while driving? A. They wear expensive clothes. B. They wear shoes with high heels. C. They drink too much coffee in cars. D. They take their dogs without tying them. 33. Those who like drinking coffee often have accidents because_ A. the coffee may make them feel faint. B. the coffee may make the car smell terrible. C. empty coffee cups may make the brake fail. D. deserted bottles look the same as brake pedals. 34. Why shouldnt drivers put their dogs in the car while driving? A. Dogs may bark loudly if seeing traffic lights. B. Dogs may walk around or even try to escape. C. Dogs may break the windows to get fresh air. D. Dogs may make the inside of the car dirty. 35. We can mainly learn from the passage that _ A. people often neglect the dangers outside the car. B. accidents will be avoided if cars are cleaned regularly. C. dangers within the car should be given more attention to. D. only 10% of the drivers remember to keep their cars clean. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Have you ever wondered what a degree might be worth to you in your job or career? 36 Harcourt Learning Direct offers you a way to get a Specialized Associate Degree in 11 of todays growing fields without having to go to college full time. 37 . Which is the best way of getting into the centre of London? M: Well, we offer a free bus in the hotel, which leaves every 20 minutes during the rush hour, or the river taxi service to London Bridge. W: When is the rush hour? M: Its between 7 and 9 in the morning and 5 and 7 in the evening. W: And how long does it take? M: The bus takes about 15 minutes, depending on the traffic. W: Which way does it go? M: Here, Ill show you on the map. From the hotel it goes along the river bank and then on to Brunel Road. It crosses the river at Tower Bridge and then stops just after Tower Bridge at Tower Hill Underground Station. W: What about the river taxi? M: Yes, its a half hourly service during the rush hour and after that it runs to a timetable. It takes about 15 minutes. Its a really nice trip. You go across to Canary Wharf Pier first, then you go along the river, under Tower Bridge and you stop just before London Bridge. It costs 1.80 each way. W: OK. Thanks. (Text 10) W:Oh, what a wonderful view! Im here with Jack Williams, whos telling me about his home town of Swanton. M:Yes, the top of this hill is the best place to see the area. Swanton is on the coast you can see the harbor from here but in fact the town is built along the river Dean. This river comes from a lake in the mountains, over there in the distance, then flows down to the flat land below us where the town is built. W: What do you like most about living here? M: About Swanton? Oh, its an important industrial town and a port, so theres lots of activity. And theres a forest behind the town with interesting wildlife. But the most exciting thing for me is the mountains. I go climbing whenever I get the chance. W: What about entertainment? M: A big centre was built last year to encourage the arts very modern. Its got a cinema, a theatre and an art gallery. And theres football. The local team hasnt done so well lately. A few years ago we nearly won the Cup. And our area is famous for music not in Swanton itself, but theres a well-known music festival in the next town. W: But there are problems with the environment. M: Were working on that. The river was a great place for fish, but the water got so polluted by the factories that most of the fish disappeared. Well, weve cleaned the river up now, and the fish are starting to come back. But Im unhappy about Swanton woods. The trees are quite healthy, but if you look, there are no birds there, and thats because pollution has reduced the number of insects.
