The earliest controversies about the relationship between photography and art centered on whether photographys fidelity to appearances and dependence on a machine allowed it to be a fine art as distinct from merely a practical art. Throughout the nineteenth century, the defense of photography was identical with the struggle to establish it as a fine art. Against the charge that photography was a soulless, mechanical copying of reality; photographers asserted that it was instead a privileged way of seeing, a revolt against commonplace vision, and no less worthy an art than painting.Ironically, now that photography is securely established as a fine art, many photographers find it pretentious or irrelevant to label it as such. Serious photographers variously claim to be finding, recording, impartially observing, witnessing events, exploring themselves anything but making works of art. In the nineteenth century, photographys association with the real world placed it in an ambivalent relation to art: late in the twentieth century an ambivalent relation exists because of the modernist heritage in art. That important photographers are no longer willing to debate whether photography is or is not a fine art, except to proclaim that their own work is not involved with art, shows the extent to which they simply take for granted the concept of art imposed by the triumph of Modernism: the better the art, the more subversive it is of the traditional aims of art.Photographers disclaimers of any interest in making art tell us more about the harried status of the contemporary notion of art than about whether photography is or is not art. For example, those photographers who suppose that, by taking pictures, they are getting away from the pretensions of art as exemplified by painting remind us of those Abstract Expressionist painters who imagined they were getting away from the intellectual austerity of classical Modernist painting by concentration on the physical act of painting. Much of photographys prestige today derives from the convergence of its aims with those of recent art, particularly with the dismissal of abstract art implicit in the phenomenon of Pop during the 1960s. Appreciating photographs is a relief to sensibilities tired of the mental exertions demanded by abstract art. Classical modernist painting - that is abstract art as developed in different ways by Picasso, Candinsky and Matisse -presupposes highly developed skills of looking and a familiarity with other paintings and the history of art, photography, like Pop painting, and reassures viewers that art is not hard: photography seems to be more about its subjects than about art.Photography, however, has developed all the anxieties and self-consciousness of a classic Modernist art. Many professionals privately have begun to worry that the promotion of photograph as an activity subversive of the traditional pretensions of art has gone so far that the public will forget that photograph is a distinctive and exalted activity -in short, an art.1.In the passage, the author is primarily concerned with( ) .2.Which of the following adjectives best describes the concept of art imposed by the triumph of Modernism” as the author represents it in the second paragraph? (The sentence in italics.)3.The author introduces Abstract Expressionist painters (in the third paragraph) in order to( ).4.According to the author, the nineteenthcentury defenders of photography mentioned in the passage stressed that photography was( ).5.According to the passage, which of the following best explains the reaction of serious contemporary photographers to the question of whether photography is an art?6.According to the passage, certain serious contemporary photographers expressly make which of the following claims about their photographs?7.It can be inferred from the passage controversies of the nineteenth centuryC.explaining the attitudes of serious contemporary photographers toward photography as art and placing those attitudes in their historical contextD.defining the various approaches that serious contemporary photographers take toward their art and assessing the value of each of those approaches问题2选项A.paradoxicalB.mechanicalC.superficialD.dramatic问题3选项A.provide an example of artists who, like serious contemporary photographers, disavowed traditionally accepted aims of modem artB.call attention to artists whose works often bear a physical resemblance to the works of serious contemporary photographersC.set forth an analogy between the Abstract Expressionist painters and classical Modernist paintersD.provide a contrast to Pop artists and others who created works that exemplify the Modernist heritage in art问题4选项A.a means of making people familiar with remote locales and unfamiliar thingsB.a technologically advanced activityC.a device for observing the world impartiallyD.an art comparable to painting问题5选项A.The photographers belief that their reliance on an impersonal machine to produce their art requires the surrenders of the authority of their personal visionB.The photographers fear that serious photography may not be accepted as an art by the contemporary art publicC.The influence of Abstract Expressionist painting and Pop Art on the subject matter of the modem photographD.The photographers belief that the best art is subversive of art as it has previously been defined问题6选项A.Their photographs could be created by almost anyone who had a camera and the time to devote to the activity.B.Their photographs are not examples of art but are examples of the photographers impartial observation of the world.C.Their photographs are important because of their subjects but not because of the responses they evoke in viewers.D.Their photographs exhibit the same ageless principles of form and shading that have been used in painting问题7选项A.contemporary art that is struggling to be accepted as fine artB.craft requiring sensitivity but no means an artC.mechanical copying of realityD.modem art that displays the Modernist tendency to try to subvert the prevailing alms of art【答案】第1题:C第2题:A第3题:A第4题:D第5题:D第6题:B第7题:A【解析】1. 根据文章第二段 shows the extent to which they simply take for granted the concept of art imposed by the triumph of Modernism: the better the art, the more subversive it is of the traditional aims of art. Against the charge that photography was a soulless, mechanical copying of reality, photographers asserted that it was instead a privileged way of seeing, a revolt against commonplace vision, and no less worthy an art than painting. That important photographers are no longer willing to debate whether photography is or is not a fine art, except to proclaim that their own work is not involved with art, shows the extent to which they simply take for granted the concept of art imposed by the triumph of Modernism: the better the art, the more subversive it is of the traditional aims of art. 文章第二段第二句提到“Serious photographers variously claim to be finding, recording, impartially observing, witnessing events, exploring themselves -anything but making works of art. 2. One of the dilemmas of this decade has been whether to approach modem education in terms of the generalist or the specialist. Some universities require all students to take a common core of courses from a broad range of disciplines, appealing to the generalist approach to education. Yet, choosing the core courses in light of todays explosion in information and diverse multicultural student populations has not been an easy task. How does one select what it is that everyone should know? Other universities continue to tailor their courses to the more immediate professional needs of their students, appealing to the specialist approach to education. But without a core curriculum, students often lack the shared knowledge necessary to participate effectively in an integrated society.【答案】这十年我们所面临的矛盾之一,究竟应该从通才还是专才的角度来看待现代教育。 3. 单选题Banks are not ordinarily prepared to pay out all accounts; they rely on depositors not to demand payment all at the same time. If depositors should come to fear that a bank couldnt pay off all its depositors, then that fear might cause all the depositors to appear on the same day. If they did, the bank could not pay all accounts. However, if they did not all appear at once, then there would always be funds to pay those who wanted their money when they wanted it. Mrs. Elsie Vaught has told us of a terrifying bank run (挤兑) that she experienced. One day, in December of 1925 several banks failed to open in a city where she lived. The other banks anticipated a run the next day, and so the officers of the bank in which Mrs. Vaught worked as a teller (出纳员) had enough funds on hand to pay off as many depositors as might apply. The officers simply instructed the tellers to pay on demand. Next morning a crowd gathered in the bank and on the sidewalk outside. The length of the line convinced many that the bank could not possibly pay off everyone. People began to push and then to fight for places near the tellers windows. Clothing was torn and limbs broken, but the jam continued for hours. The power of the panic atmosphere is evident in the fact that two tellers, though they knew that the bank was sound and could pay out all depositors, nevertheless withdrew the funds in their own accounts. Mrs. Vaught says that she had difficulty restraining herself from doing the same.11. A bank run occurs when _.12. What happened to some of the customers of the bank where Mrs. Vaught worked?13. The essential cause of a run on a bank is _.14. The crowds gathered in Mrs. Vaughts bank and on the sidewalk because of _.15. According to the passage, the actions of the customers of Mrs. Vaughts bank were influenced chiefly by _. A.a bank is closed for one or more dayB.employees of a bank take their own funds out of the bankC.too many depositors attempt to draw out their money at one timeD.there appear long lines in front of the tellers windows问题2选项A.They lost their money.B.They got injured.C.They had to leave part of their money in the bank.D.They were forced to put their money into other banks. A.lack of sufficient fundsB.too many depositorsC.inefficient tellersD.loss of confidence问题4选项A.doubtB.greedC.angerD.curiosity问题5选项A.the failure of the bank to pay off everyoneB.the failure of several banks to openC.the actions of the two tellers in the bankD.the difficulty with which they obtain their money【答案】第1题:C第2题:B第3题:D第4题:A第5题:B【解析】11.【试题答案】C【试题解析】客观细节题。 Banks are not ordinarily prepared to pay out all accounts; they rely on depositors not to demand payment all at the same time. If depositors should come to fear that a bank couldnt pay off all its depositors, then that fear might cause all the depositors to appear on the same day. If they did, the bank could not pay all accounts.(银行通常不会准备支付所有储户的款项;它们依赖储户不会全部同时要求取款。 People began to push and then to fight for places near the tellers windows. Clothing was torn and limbs broken, but the jam continued for hours.(人们开始推挤,然后争夺靠近出纳员窗口的位置。 If depositors should come to fear that a bank couldnt pay off all its depositors, then that fear might cause all the depositors to appear on the same day.(如果储户担心银行无法支付所有存款人,那么这种担心可能会导致所有储户在同一天出现来取款。) Next morning a crowd gathered in the bank and on the sidewalk outside. The length of the line convinced many that the bank could not possibly pay off everyone.(第二天早上,一群人聚集在银行和外面的人行道上。 原文也说明the bankshad enough funds on hand to pay off as many depositors as might apply,可知这家银行是有支付能力的,也不存在取钱困难,所以A和D选项可排除;C选项“两名出纳的行为”其实源自于储户的行为,所以并不是储户行为的原因,也可以排除。4. 单选题We are good at inventing way to enlarge our realm. Repeatedly we find methods of spreading farther. If an element is forbidding, we devise a means to master it. Reaching the continental shores, we developed ship-building and navigational skills in order to cross oceans. Shivering at arctic weather, we designed for clothing and snug shelters in order to edge northward. And, having first occupied much of the usable space in the world, we are filling its usable time. Although being wakeful at night flouted our natural rhythms, we developed artificial lighting that let us be active after dark.An era is now under way in which we are replacing our cyclic community with activities that never stop. There is widespread factory shift work. Airports, gasoline stations, hotels, restaurants and broadcasters operate incessantly. Data-processing departments of insurance companies and banks are astir all night. Meanwhile, isolated individuals bend over books and papers on desks in their homes, watch television after midnight, or walk in the streets and listen to the night breathe. This extension across all hours of the day resembles our spreading across the face of the Earth. Look at both trends from enough perspective in distance and time and they appear alike. Hover far above the planet and watch it as it spins throughout the eras. With the planets surface in daylight, little human settlements can be seen to grow larger as the years go by and small extensions appear at their outskirts. Watch the surface when it is in night and at first some pinpoints of light flicker for a while and then go out. After ages pass, those light become stronger; they stay on longer, and other glimmerings appear nearby. Day and night, over thousands of years, reveal to us widening networks of human settlements and illumination being prolonged after dark. The surface is not uniformly occupied. The hours are not uniformly lit. But both are advancing in order. Both forms of expansion are frontiers. A frontier is a new source of resources that people use for subsistence or for profit. It is also a safety valve for people who feel confined. They disperse in response to pressures at home and to appealing opportunities elsewhere. Now, venturing into the night, we have the same motives as our predecessors who migrated geographically. The daytime is too crowded. Its carrying capacity is being strained, and still it does not yield alt that the community wants. The chance to exploit facilities that are left idle also arouses our initiative to use more of the night. Using the same space more of the time is a way to multiply its capacity. Some people dislike the commotion of the day and crave the serenity of night. Others look to it to better themselves economically. It is no accident that personal motives for relief and opportunity are similar to the causes of expansion for the community as a whole. Those are the age-old forces behind all migrations.1.The primary purpose of the passage is to( ) .2.The examples the author cites in Para.2 (“There is night”)illustrate a blurring of( )3.In context, the use of “Look”, “Hover,” and “Watch”(in Para.3) is intended to( ).4.In Para. 3, both most directly refers to( ) .5.Which of the following activities provides the best example of the way to multiply as discussed in the last paragraph? A.persuade readers to increase their use of nighttime hoursB.argue that constant human activity is harmful to individuals and groupsC.explore how the changing use of time is related to the history of human expansionD.critique the way in which changing labor patterns have come to dominate human life问题2选项A.ambition and greedB.solitude and companionshipC.the uses of nighttime and of daytimeD.the purposes of work and of recreation问题3选项A.warn readers of the threat of unbounded migrationB.invite readers to imagine human history visuallyC.prepare readers to anticipate change and its consequencesD.promote the use of nighttime hours for work or leisure activities问题4选项A.worker productivity and national wealthB.scientific knowledge and individual well-beingC.competing work demands and available timeD.inhabited space and usable time问题5选项A.Conducting evening classes in public school buildingsB.Keeping municipal offices open during the lunch hourC.Enforcing curfew laws in residential neighborhoodsD.Adding more buildings to a factory complex【答案】第1题:C第2题:C第3题:B第4题:D第5题:A【解析】1. 本题可通过文中出现 的“spreading”、“edge northward、“This extension across all hours of the day” 以及 “Day and night, over thousands of years, reveal to us widening networks of human settlements and illumination being prolonged after dark. 由第二段中的“There is widespread factory shift work. Airports, gasoline stations, hotels, restaurants and broadcasters operate incessantly. Data-processing departments of insurance companies and banks are astir all night.
