One night, standing out on the deck, I felt destroyed by my burden. I was about $50,000 in debt. My publisher and my agent were at me constantly, to ask when I would finish this endless book. A B C D【答案】D to ask改为asking【解析】【考查点】非谓语动词。 My publisher and my agent是主动关系,所以用现在分词asking。 2. 单选题According to a survey, which was based on the responses of over 188,000 students, todays traditional-age college freshmen are “more materialistic and less altruistic (利他主义的)” than at any time in the 17 years of the poll. Not surprising in these hard times, the students major objective “is to be financially well off. Less important than ever is developing a meaningful philosophy of life”. It follows then that today the most popular course is not literature or history but accounting.Interest in teaching, social service and the “altruistic” fields is at a low. On the other hand, enrollment in business programs, engineering and computer science is way up.Thats no surprise either. A friend of mine (a sales representative for a chemical company) was making twice the salary of her college instructors her first year on the jobeven before she completed her two-year associate degree. While its true that we all need a career, it is equally true that our civilization has accumulated an incredible amount of knowledge in fields far removed from our own and that we are better for our understanding of these other contributionsbe they scientific or artistic. It is equally true that, in studying the diverse wisdom of others, we learn how to think. More important, perhaps, education teaches us to see the connections between things, as well as to see beyond our immediate needs.Weekly we read of unions who went on strike for higher wages, only to drive their employer out of business. No company, no job. How shortsighted in the long run!But the most important argument for a broad education is that in studying the accumulated wisdom of the ages, we improve our moral sense. I saw a cartoon recently which shows a group of businessmen looking puzzled as they sit around a conference table; one of them is talking on the intercom, “Miss Baxter,” he says, “could you please send in someone who can distinguish right from wrong?”From the long-term point of view, thats what education really ought to be about.1. According to the authors observation, college students _.2. The students criteria for selecting majors today have much to do with _.3. By saying “While its true that.be they scientific or artistic” (Para. 5), the author means that _.4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.have never been so materialistic as todayB.have never been so interested in the artsC.have never been so financially well off as todayD.have never attached so much importance to moral sense问题2选项A.the influences of their instructorsB.the financial goals they seek in lifeC.their own interpretations of the coursesD.their understanding of the contributions of others问题3选项A.business management should be included in educational programsB.human wisdom has accumulated at an extraordinarily high speedC.human intellectual development has reached new heightsD.the importance of a broad education should not be overlooked问题4选项A.Businessmen absorbed in their career are narrow-minded.B.Managers often find it hard to tell right from wrong.C.Career seekers should not focus on immediate interests only.D.People engaged in technical jobs lead a more rewarding life.【答案】第1题:A第2题:B第3题:D第4题:C【解析】第1题:【选项释义】According to the authors observation, college students _. A. have never been so materialistic as today A. B. have never been so interested in the arts B. C. have never been so financially well off as today C. D. have never attached so much importance to moral sense D. 从未如此重视道德感【答案】A【考查点】事实细节题。 The students criteria for selecting majors today have much to do with _. A. the influences of their instructors A. 他们的导师的影响B. the financial goals they seek in life B. C. their own interpretations of the courses C. D. their understanding of the contributions of others D. By saying “While its true that.be they scientific or artistic” (Para. 5), the author means that _. 他说“While its true that.be they scientific or artistic”(第五段),作者的意思是_。A. business management should be included in educational programs A. B. human wisdom has accumulated at an extraordinarily high speed B. C. human intellectual development has reached new heights C. D. the importance of a broad education should not be overlooked D. 5和信息词While its true定位到第五段第一句,该处讲到“诚然,我们都需要一份职业,但同样不可否认的是(it is equally true that),我们的文明已经在与我们自身相距甚远的领域积累了大量的知识(an incredible amount of knowledge),我们更好地理解了(better for our understanding)这些领域的其他贡献无论是科学上的还是艺术上的(be they scientific or artistic)。” Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? Businessmen absorbed in their career are narrow-minded. B. Managers often find it hard to tell right from wrong. C. Career seekers should not focus on immediate interests only. D. People engaged in technical jobs lead a more rewarding life. 3. 填空题The professional fields that deal with ethical issues in medicine including medicine, nursing, law, sociology, philosophy, and theology, though in the late 20th century medical ethics has come to berecognized as its own discipline. A B C D【答案】B including改为include【解析】【考查点】动词。 4. 填空题The family is a cooperative enterprise which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems. A B C D【答案】A which改为where或for which【解析】【考查点】从句。【解题思路】it is difficult to lay down rules是修饰enterprise的定语从句,enterprise表示地点,所以可以用where引导。 It is difficult for sb. to do sth.,此题为for enterprise,在这里for which相当于where。 5. 单选题He told Arab lawmakers who took part in the protest that “the day will come when we will banish you from the national home”. 6. 填空题In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the citys buildings and highways, to make them more resistant to quakes. A B C D【答案】C to make改为making【解析】【考查点】非谓语动词。 7. 填空题People with depression may have low self-esteem, a sense of hopelessness about the future, and a lack of interest in people and activities once found _. 8. 单选题The Romans were hardworking and frugal, self-reliant, serious about their responsibilities and steadfast in the face of adversity.问题1选项A.economicalB.cautiousC.courageousD.righteous【答案】A【解析】【选项释义】A. economical 节俭的,节约的 B. cautious 小心的,谨慎的C. courageous 勇敢的,无畏的 D. righteous 公正的,正直的【答案】A【考查点】形容词辨析。 9. 单选题The brick-and-mortar museum that exists in the real world is unlikely to become obsolete, but “visiting” museums in cyberspace is now a common pastime.问题1选项A.hobbyB.fashionC.modeD.pattern【答案】A【解析】【选项释义】A. hobby 业余爱好(活动) B. fashion (衣服、发式等的)流行款式,时兴式样C. mode 风格,样式 D. pattern 模式【答案】A【考查点】名词辨析。 10. 单选题Vince Cables decision not to come to Oxford because of a peaceful protest is one of the most cowardly acts by a British politician in living memory. 11. 填空题Severe government cuts _ reduce social and health programmes that are vital for the poor. 12. 单选题A program to deregulate the economy involved the removal of many legal and governmental restrictions that were regarded as hindrances to free competition. 13. 单选题Experts said that many ailments associated with a loss of normal tissue may be treatable in this manner. 14. 单选题In the 1950s, the pioneers of artificial intelligence (AI) predicted that, by the end of this century, computers would be conversing with us at work and robots would be performing our housework. But as useful as computers are, theyre nowhere close to achieving anything remotely resembling these early aspirations for humanlike behavior. Never mind something as complex as conversation: the most powerful computers struggle to reliably recognize the shape of an object, the most elementary of tasks for a ten-month-old kid.A growing group of AI researchers think they know where the field went wrong. The problem, the scientists say, is that AI has been trying to separate the highest, most abstract levels of thought, like language and mathematics, and to duplicate them with logical, step-by-step programs. A new movement in AI, on the other hand, takes a closer look at the more roundabout way in which nature came up with intelligence. Many of these researchers study evolution and natural adaptation instead of formal logic and conventional computer programs. Rather than digital computers and transistors, some want to work with brain cells and proteins. The results of these early efforts are as promising as they are peculiar, and the new nature-based AI movement is slowly but surely moving to the forefront of the field.Imitating the brains neural network is a huge step in the right direction, says computer scientist and biophysicist Michael Conrad, but it still misses an important aspect of natural intelligence. “People tend to treat the brain as if it were made up of color-coded transistors,” he explains, “but its not simply a clever network of switches. There are lots of important things going on inside the brain cells themselves.” Specifically, Conrad believes that many of the brains capabilities stem from the pattern recognition proficiency of the individual molecules that make up each brain cell. The best way to build an artificially intelligent device, he claims, would be to build it around the same sort of molecular skills.Right now, the option that conventional computers and software are fundamentally incapable of matching the processes that take place in the brain remains controversial. But if it proves true, then the efforts of Conrad and his fellow AI rebels could turn out to be the only game in town.1. The author says that the powerful computers of today _.2. The new trend in artificial intelligence research stems from _.3. Conrad and his group of AI researchers have been making enormous efforts to _.4. Whats the authors opinion about the new AI movement? A.are capable of reliably recognizing the shape of an objectB.are close to exhibiting humanlike behaviorC.are not very different in their performance from those of the 50sD.still cannot communicate with people in a human language问题2选项A.the shift of the focus of study on to the recognition of the shapes of objectsB.the belief that human intelligence cannot be duplicated with logical, step-by-step programsC.the aspirations of scientists to duplicate the intelligence of a ten-month-old childD.the efforts made by scientists in the study of the similarities between transistors and brain cells问题3选项A.find a roundabout way to design powerful computersB.build a computer using a clever network of switchesC.find out how intelligence developed in natureD.separate the highest and most abstract levels of thought问题4选项A.It may prove to be in the right direction though nobody is sure of its future prospects.B.Its a breakthrough in duplicating human thought processes.C.Its more like a peculiar game rather than a real scientific effort.D.It has created a sensation among artificial intelligence researchers but will soon die out.【答案】第1题:D第2题:B第3题:C第4题:A【解析】第1题:【选项释义】The author says that the powerful computers of today _. A. are capable of reliably recognizing the shape of an object A. B. are close to exhibiting humanlike behavior B. C. are not very different in their performance from those of the 50s C. D. still cannot communicate with people in a human language D. (Never mind something as complex as conversation)。” The new trend in artificial intelligence research stems from _. A. the shift of the focus of study on to the recognition of the shapes of objects A. B. the belief that human intelligence cannot be duplicated with logical, step-by-step programs B. C. the aspirations of scientists to duplicate the intelligence of a ten-month-old child C. D. the efforts made by scientists in the study of the similarities between transistors and brain cells D. 【解题思路】根据题干中信息词new trend in artificial intelligence定位到第二段第三句,该处讲到“另一方面(on the other hand),人工智能领域的一项新动向(A new movement in AI)更深入地探讨了自然创造智能的迂回方式。”,而其中的原因在该段第二句“科学家们表示,问题在于(The problem),人工智能一直在试图分离最高级、最抽象的思维层次(the highest, most abstract levels of thought),比如语言和数学,然后用逻辑的、循序渐进的程序复制它们(duplicate them with logical, step-by-step programs)。” (Rather than digital computers and transistors)。” Conrad and his group of AI researchers have been making enormous efforts to _.
