And the surge of learning English is so giant that you can find that almost all people at different ages, in different professions, and with different education levels are studying English with efforts, especially for students. Whats more, it is widely accepted that parents are responsible for sending their children to learn English even when they are very young, for example, before children entering their primary school. It is a fairly good tendency due to the demands of the times. We Chinese should put our steps onto the world. Then English is the tool essential for us. As a result, we should emphasize on its studying.Whats coming up is that quite a lot of examinations for English studying appear in our society, such as TOEFL, TOPE, and so on. As a college student, I just want to talk something about some English tests in our studying lives.In my opinion, the English tests which are popular with college students can be divided into three kinds. And the first one is CET. The full name of CET is College English Test. We can draw the conclusion from its name that it is given to college students specially. Further, it is connected with the result that if we can get our master degrees. So it is very important. There are two kinds of CET. They are Band 4 and Band 6. For most universities in Shanghai, Band 4 is necessary. Our schools will register the exam for us. How about the test? It usually contains four parts. They are listening, reading, choice, and writing. We always hear that it is not very difficult to pass it. But if you want to get Excellent Degree, which means that your score is above 85 points, you should pay enough attention to it. To tell the truth, I find that it is a big challenge for me to get Excellent Degree. And some of my classmates agree with me. But no matter what level we get in our daily English studying, all of us overwhelm ourselves to prepare for it. Then how about Band 6? For many universities, that whether you take part in it or not is due to your own alternative. But it is much harder than Band 4 to pass it. These two exams are required when we want to get our degrees. And they are delivered by the Nation Education Administration. On the other hand, our English level would be tested on some content. Maybe this is the primary purpose of NEA. But these two tests are not for all of college students. If you are students specialized in English subject, you should take part in Test for English major grade eight. The second kind of test is not a very definite one. But it can be described as several tests which show ones ability of English. This involves quite a lot of sections. But most of them are related to the ability to communicate with each other and to make ourselves understood. For instance, the intermediate/advance interpretation test is now quite popular with college students. In Shanghai, there are several famous spare-time colleges which offer courses on it, such as New Oriental School, Qian Jin college. When you attend the course designed for passing the exams, you will learn a large quantity of useful skills which are experience outlined by excellent teachers and students. It is certain that you will benefit from it. The interpretation test is constituted by two parts, the written part and oral part. They are held separately, first written and then oral. My classmates who register for the exams told me after he finished his test that the written test was just a piece of cake. Even when you havent attended any special course, you would pass it with a large possibility. But the oral test is a so difficult that two out of three of my classmates who tried their luck failed. They told me that the oral test is in the form of translating an English passage into Chinese. One of their topics is about Tai-chi. It seems terrible for them. The third kind I mentioned is the English tests for studying aboard. Perhaps all of college students can give several names of English tests of this kind. But the most widely spread tests are TOEFL and GRE. The full name of TOEFL is Test of English as Foreign Language. Almost all of people who want to get further education in foreign country get familiar with it. It can be regarded as the earliest examinations for studying aboard. In the past few years, it always occupied the dominant position. But recently, since its form has changed into machine tests from written tests, whats more, the writing part has been cancelled, people pay less and less attention on it. On the contrary, the GRE test has gradually take the place of it. GRE, of which the full name is Graduator Record Examination, is one of the most widely accepted scores by foreign colleges for those who wants to apply for graduators aboard. Because I am studying TOEFL course in Qian Jin College and two of my classmates are studying GRE course in New Oriental School. I can draw a specific data on how popular these two tests are. All of us are taking the course on weekends. In Qian Jin, there are two classes of TOEFL, and each class has about 40 students. In New Oriental, there is only one class at weekends, but it consists of about 500 students. Added the number of students studying in other colleges, such as Only, we would easily find that these two exams always occupied the dominant position, although there are some other tests just like TOPE, GMAT, IELTS.According to the introduction above, we may get a rough impression of the English tests in our college students daily lives. I think that these three kinds of tests are the most widely mentioned ones. There is no doubt that as a college student, you must take part in at least one of them. As a result, how to choose the most suitable one is of great importance. We must take our study level, the economic condition, and personal ideal into account. For example, the CET is the exams we must take, because we are partly working hard for the master degree or higher degrees. Then we have no choice but place enough emphasis on it. Because no pass, no degrees. On the other hand, what about our future after graduation? Will you go aboard? Since to send their children study aboard is the cherished desire of most of our parents. Or for some other reasons, you are not willing to go aboard. Then will you stay here to get a job? When you draw the definite answer about the question I mentioned above, you are able to choose whether or not you will take the TOEFL or GRE, or any other exams of the same kind. And if you choose to stay inside, may be holding some certificates will help you much when you are getting a job. One of my senior high school classmate who is now studying in Fu Dan University told me that he wanted to take the advance interpretation test. He is looking for some part-time job now. He found that this certificate is so keen for many enterprises. I think that his experience can give us a vivid lesson. All of us know the importance of learning English well. Then through my classmates experience, we would draw more motivation to build up the determination to pour ourselves onto it.English is a tool for us, but not just a tool. When you regard it as a language and pay enough efforts, you will always be certain to harvest.
