The book consists of 23 chapters with thousands of stories made up of paragraphs, words and letters on different levels. There are one billion words in the book, which makes it longer than 5000 volumes the size of an ordinary book, or as long as 800 Bibles. If I read the genome out to you at the rate of one word per second for eight hours a day,it would take me a century. If I wrote out the human genome, one letter per millimeter, my text would be as long as the River Danube. This is an enormous document,a huge volume,a book of great length, and it all fits inside the extremely small nucleus(核) of a tiny cell that fits easily upon the head of a pin.The idea of the genome as a book is not, strictly speaking, even a metaphor (比喻). It is true to a great extent. A book is a piece of digital information, written in onedirectional form and defined by a code that translates a small alphabet of signs into a large dictionary of meanings through the order of their groupings. So is a genome. The only complication is that all English books read from left to right while some parts of the genome read from left to right, and some from right to left, though never both at the same time.English books are written in words of different lengths using twentysix letters, while genomes are written entirely in threeletter words, using only four letters. And instead of being written on flat pages, they are written on long chains of DNA molecules(分子). The genome is a very clever book, because in the right conditions it can both photocopy itself and read itself.1How do human genomes read according to the passage?AOnly from left to right.BOnly from right to left.CFrom both directions at the same time.DFrom one direction at a time.答案:D据第二段最后一句话可知人体基因组有时从左到右读,有时从右到左,但不会两者同时,故正确答案为D项。2We can learn from the passage that the human genome_.Ais as long as the River DanubeBcan be easily placed on the head of a pinCis coded with an alphabet of four lettersDis smart enough to read and take photos of itself答案:C据最后一段第一句可知正确答案应为C项。3It can be concluded that the passage is mainly written for _.Aspecialists in the fieldBgeneral readersCnatural scientistsDreaders with academic background答案:B通读全文可知本文应是面向普通读者的。4The real purpose of the authors comparison of the genome to a book is _.Ato focus on the differences between the twoBto lay emphasis on the similarities between the twoCto simplify the concept of the human genomeDto give an exact description of the human genome答案:C根据第一段可知作者将基因组比作一本书为的就是简单明了地阐述人体基因组的概念。BIn the West, advertisements are the fuel that makes mass media work. Many TV stations, newspapers, magazines, radio stations are privately owned. The government does not give them money. So where does the money come from? From advertisements. Without advertisements, there would not be these private businesses.Have you ever asked yourself what advertising is? Through the years, people have given different answers to the question. For some time it was felt that advertising was a means of “keeping your name before the public” And some people thought that advertising was “truth well told” Now more and more people consider it in this way. Advertising is the paid, nonpersonal, and usually persuasive presentation of goods, services and ideas by some certain sponsors (发起人) through various media. First, advertising is usually paid for. Various sponsors pay for the advertisements we see, read, and hear over the various media. Second, advertising is nonpersonal. It is not facetoface communication. Although you may feel that a message in a certain advertisement is aimed directly at you, in reality, it is directed at large groups of people. Third, advertising is usually persuasive. Directly or indirectly it asks people to do something. All advertisements try to make people believe that the product, idea, or service advertised can benefit them. Fourth, the sponsors of the advertisement must show their names. From the advertisement, we can see if the sponsor is a company, or a single person. Fifth, advertising reaches us through old and modern mass media. Included in the old media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and films. Modern media include emails, matchbox covers, and boards on top of buildings.5The existence of the privately owned mass media depends on the support of _.Athe government Btheir owners familiesCadvertisements Dthe TV stations答案:C细节理解题。第一段的内容:in the West, advertisements are the fuel(在西方国家,广告使大量的媒体得以工作,所以被比喻成燃料)和Without advertisements, there would not be these private businesses,所以就可以知道西方大量媒体的存在是依靠广告的。6The passage seems to say that different ideas of advertising are given due to _.Athe change of timeBthe subject of the advertisementsCpeoples age differenceDpeoples different opinions答案:A推理判断题。从第二段可以看出,对于广告不同的看法是由于时代的不同,从文章中的Through the years可以得出正确的答案。7Which of the following is considered modern mass media?ANewspapers. BEmails.CMagazines. DFilms.答案:B细节理解题。由文章最后一句可知。8According to the passage, which of the following statements about advertisements is NOT true?AThe sponsors are always mentioned.BAdvertising must be honest and humorous.CThere is the description of things advertised.DAdvertising is meant for large groups of people.答案:B细节理解题。选项B与文中的advertising is usually persuasive不一致。.短文填空根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。In your life, you may have many unforgettable events like winning a prize, going aboard_1_ I was always dreaming of swimming like a fish ! Luckily, a young swimmer nearby happened to find me and soon I was pulled out. Being out of water, I felt I was transported to the wonder world. Realizing that I was safe and well, I burst into tears._3_ I went for another try with my brother. But I feared that I would never become a good swimmer. I stepped carefully into the swimming pool but when the water came up to my stomach, I lost my balance again and fell into the water. I found myself further away from my brother than I thought. The King of Terror was approaching! Desperately, I kept my eyes wide open and tried to seize my brother by the arm, once, twice, three times.I was shouting and waving my arms exhaustedly. At last, my brother was able to reach out his hand to touch me. I got saved again._4_ But motivated by the desire to swim, I made my third attempt. I felt my legs paralyzed on the bank when I faced the big swimming pool. Watching the happy swimmers in the water, I was inspired. Why not have a last try? I took a deep breath and confidently went forward . As I was going deeper into the water, I made great efforts to control my thought, so I could keep the balance. _5_ I was able to swim! And we can make use of the cloned organs to help some patients. However, others hold the opposite opinion, they argue that human cloning is immoral. Cloning can even increase the population, therefore it will cause many social problems. The cloned humans are also humans and we are likely to lose control of them. So why should we get ourselves in trouble? As far as I am concerned, Im in complete agreement with human cloning. After all, scientists have been challenging questions of morality for centuries. Why should we stop them now? But we have to make sure that were cloning humans with the intention of benefiting humans.Whats your opinion? Write to me soon.Yours,Jack
